THAT NEW DAILY.
Some newspaper men have made a
proposition to the Portland Cham
ber of Commerce anent the estab
lishment of a daily, morning, in
that city. These gentlemen pro
pose that 10,000 cash Stibscirp-
tions, 175,000, shall be advanced,
and the money placed in escrow in
a Portland bank, Ladd & Tilton's,
to there remain until the paper
shall be supplied one year, and the
monev to be returned in case of

failure to run the term of subscrip
tion. Every wideawake citizen of
the No-tbwest would like to see
another morning paper in Port
land. There would be thousands
of men with capital ready to start
a daily in that city were ten thous
and cash subscribers on hand.
Such a circulation would command
a good advertising patronage
Portland needs another paper.
Nowhere in the United States is
there such a field. The field is
good enough to warrant another
paper without asking such a ''sure
thing." Once established, if meri
torious, the paper would sell itself.
While The Argus would like to
see it, it is candidly afraid that it
will never com" if promoters wait
to get that ten thousand of a circa
lation in advance. An opposition
paper is sure to come. It is only a
question of time.
FORCING THE ISSUE.
The trusts are, by their actions,
doing more to force before the peo
ple of America the matter of gov
ernment ownership than all pther
agencies combined. The great
railroad corporations, by pooling
their stock, are doing more to en
lighten the people u ou tho sub
ject of government ownership of
railways than all the propaganda
of reform literature. If the peo
ple must legislate to keep part of
what belongs to the people, it then
follows that people will do well to
legislate into ownership of the
properties in question. It is only
a matter of degree, and since it is
only this, why not own and oper
ate? The trusts are not only de
stroying competition against what
they have to sell, but they are de
stroying competitive demand for
labor. By so doing they not only
fix the price of their commodity
and cost of transportation, but
they also fix the price of labor.
Labor unions must go. They must
be sacrificed to the greed of capital
ism. The issue will be forced. As
the people pay the profits, it wil
not be long before they will see fit
to enjoy these same profits. Hu
man nature, in a country like this
will not stand an oligarchy oi this
kind to rob the essence of civil
life. It must end somewhere this
highway robbery. Intelligence
understands this. None but fools
laugh at the idea of revolution in
our industrial system. But it
must come, sooner or larer, and
the action of capitalism is hurry
ing it to the goal.
SOUTHERN liYNCHIXG.
Within the past week there have
been a half-dozen lynchings re
ported in the South of men who
had criminally assaulted women,
all of those lynched being negroes
"except one. This is deplorable,
but it will exist so long as fiends in
human form persist in assaulting
defenseless women. The Ameri
can woman is the noblest creation
of God, and we believe she is held
in higher regard than the women
of any other nationality. Every
man who is worthy of the name is
ready to defend her honor and her
person, especially against the rav
ages of such fiends as the South is
afflicted with.
It apparently seems harsh to
. justify lynching, but we certainly

Would you consider burning at the
stake any too severe punishment?
We think not. And the villan
who attempts to assault a defense
lees woman knows full well he is
taking his life in his own hands
when he plans the crime. The
more this is pre&ed upon him, the
less frequent will such occurrences
be. Rape fiends cannot well be
reache i by the law, at least the
operations of the courts have no
terrors for them. But the stake
and faggot or the hangman's rope
in the hands of an infurated mob
have. A time may come when
Southern lynchings may cease to
be necessary, but that time will be
when .the criminal class of that
section have reformed, when they
shall have ceased to assault de
fenseless women and children.
The reformation rests with them,
not with the outraged masses.

selves democrats and yet are
trying to turn the organi
sation over to the capitalists
the same who control the present

ing their time and their support is

Shortsighted people like these, who
can not see toe very essence 01
common sense, had better get in
the bank and trust party and stay
there. Flank movements of such
politicians go for nothing in these
days. The next National Demo
cratic convention may as well not
meet if it is to come out in terms of
bedfellowship with the monopolies.
The fellows who are running the
banks are the fellows who are run
ning the manufactories and the
railways. When you love one you
love them alL If the democrats
are to become plutocratic let them
go'into the Hanna party and quit
work. One trust party is enough.

a letter received today, of the American
teachers who tailed on the transport
Thomas from San Francisco to Manila
sixty of them were married on reaching
Honolulu The teachers had been
chosen from many of the Normal nnirer
sities oi the conntrv and were all
strangers to each other. Their acquain
tanceship and courtship extended over a
period ol leas than ten days. The cap
tain of the Thomas refused to permit
their weddings while enroute and the
30 pairs npon the arrival of the trrnspor.
at Honolulu sought out a clergyman and
were all married.
One of the many attractions of
the Native Son's Carnival, com
mencing Oct. 2, will be the daily
auction sales. This will afford one
of the best opportunities of the sea
son to buy or sell stock or other
property. It is intended by the
managers to list all proprrty and
thoroughly advertise before the
days of sale. Those having prop
erty for such disposal will do well
to call on or drop a card to B. P.
Cornelius, who will be the auction
eer, or James H. Sewell, members
of the committee.
0. Randall, a son of Judge Ran
dall, is in the city, visiting with
his parents, after a short vacation
in California. Mr. Randall is the
foreman in the composing rooms of
the Salem Statesman, and an old-
time printer.

gone to the Nehalem country this
week, for a short outing. They ex
