WHT NOT THE BANKERS?
Soma of the rcDublican journals of
tbo East are now complaining that
there is too couch evidence of bank
er dictation in our affairs of govern
menU This it certainly very re
freshing, coming frora the very
sources of' support of republican
ism. Those citizens who are now
complaining about this litvle mat
ter are to be pitied. There was
not a day during the last ten
years that democratic journals did
not sound the alarm, and show
that we were going from a govern
ment by the popular will to a gov
ernment by the banks. Every
man of intelligence who cast his
vote for Mr. McKinlew knew ;hat
he was casting it for a banker ad
ministration. He knew, if . he
knew anything at all, that it was a
contest between the people at large
and the corporations. He knew
that HcKinley's election meant the
greatest success of the hankercraU?
and corporationcrats. That is all
there is to it. Why should not
the bankers rule the country?
They ara good business men, and
their holdings have nothing to do
with patriotism. You are getting
a .business man's administration.
Dura and simple. By business
men we mean men who first iook
out for themselves and use patriot
ism as a sideshow on national holi
days. The banks and he trusts
are made up and managed by our
moat successful men nd these
are the men who are in control of
our affairs of government You
voted for them, and there is no
reason to complain. Thea are dif-
' ferent now than they were prior to
election. These kicking journals
should hold their peace. They are
getting just what they voted for.
That is all there is to the situation.
CRTS ITS DI8EABK.
It really amused The Akqcs to
Witness the terrible excoriations
that our friends, the enemy, the
trusts are getting from the editor

Tht journal has suddenly disco v

gregations of capital that have ab

Up the body politic. This is novel,
this "abecedarian" of republican

Iniquities of trusts, etc. It some

his incurable diseases.
Proverb for tbe President.
(Kroni the Springfield Republican.)
When President McKinley kissed the
open Bible in taking the oath of office it
is said that hi lip. touched these verses
in tbe l6tb chapter of Proverbs:
He that b.ndletb a matter wisely
shall find good; and whoso trutteth in
tbe Lord, happy is be. 1
The wise in heart shall be called pru
dent; and tbe sweetness of the lips is-
creaaem learning
Very pat indeed, but another piece of
McKinley luck, no doubt, in missing
some of tbe other passages in which the
Book of Proverbs abounds. For ex
ample: It is aa abnomination to kings to com
mit wickedness, for the throne is estab
lished by righteousness.
Then is a wav that seemeth rieht to
awn, but the end thereof are the ways of
4est.
' Remove not the ancient landmark
which thy. fathers haye set.
Aud of the seven abominations unto
the Lord:
A proud look, a lying tongue and
hands that shed innocent blood.
