Do the rank and file of Washing
ton county republicans know that
in 1895 the Independent was
, strongly opposed to the gold stand
ard? Do they know that in 1S9S
the Oregonian said that oar pre
tensions in the Spanish war pre
vented as from acquiring the Phil
ippines and that the most we
should take there was a coaling
and naval station? Do they know
that these public educators have
"flopped" and that they expect in
telligent men to follow them like
so many sheep follow bell wethers?
Can intelligence not WHS that these
journals had to get into line with
the big bosses who dictated the na
tiooal platform? Can they, these
journals, blow hot and cold and
make intelligent men the creatures
of their acrobatic flip-flops? Has
it eome to this that men blindly
follow pipers wbich support a plat
form enunciated by men who put
international planks in their papers
only to be thrown away after they
have caught votes and served base
purposes? Is it not time that the
republicans of this county or any
other county, for that matter-
throw off the collars thee editors
think they have on the voters at
large? Are they always, intention
ally or unintentionally, to follow
these demagogues who cry "virtue,"
"honor and the flag" just to give
power to national . bankers and the
trusts? The Abgub is satisfied
tbat the voters at large will show
that their eyes are open. Will the
voters of this county follow suit, or
will they be tolled along as the
Oregonian and the Independent
flatter themselves will be the caee?

When the forces of De Graase and
LaFayette joined the rebels (Amer
icans) over one hundred years ago
and whipped Britain on Ameiican
oil, and soil to which Great Brit
ain had unquestionable title ac
cording te our latter day moralists,
why did not England, for a con

ternational morals? And had
Britain so ceded America, as Spain
"ceded" the Philippines, would
there have been any "rebels" to

Such an ont come would be in every
way to be regretted. If we do not want
Cuba, much less do we want the Philip
pines. Tbere is doubt as to the unfit
ness for self-government charged
against the Cubans; but there is no
douht of it as far as the inhabitants of
the Philippines are concerned. All the people,
arguments urged against Hawaiian an
nexation by thoughtful Americans are
applicable with greater force against
these tropical Asiatic islands, and they
are not met, as the Hawaiian arguments
are met, by the fact that Hawaii is our
rightful sphere of influence and essen
tially American, for the Philippines are
not. Our ends in Cuba will be sub
served as they are in Mexico, Central
aud South America, by withdrawal of
European domination and by recogni
tion of our hegemony. This will even
suffice with Hawaii if annexation fails.
'But in the case of the Philippines we
have no such necessities or interests.
European possession in Asia concerns us
nothing except that we have fair trade
facilities. We have there no purposes of
offence or defence. At the most, a naval
and coaling station should be the limit
of our desires there.
We are about to enter on a career of
foreign conquest, but our position in the
world requires us to have naval stations
distant from our own shores. We need
a naval station in the East Indies, an
other in the West Indies; and are need
Hawaii. Air these the fortune of oppor
tunity now offers to us. We do not want
to keep the Philippine islands, but we
should keep a naval station tbere.
