creditable administration in other
reupects. In some instance lie
has Wn charged with Iteinjj 1ih
cl.w, and perhaps this charge is
. well founded, but he lias placed
Washington's financial standing
where it has not been for years and
years. He has had but one object
in view to give the county the
best poRsible service with con-current
reduction of the vast debt
which was costing thousands of
. dollars iu interest each year. So,
if he has used the pruning knife
too closely at times, let it be con
ceded that he has now placed the
county in a position where a more
liberal policy can be followed
While we are not yet wholly clear
from debt another year will do the
t work.
The people made no mistake
when they put laiuis Rood to the
head of county affairs and took the
office of county judge out of polit
ics. Every taxpayer should read
the financial exhibit in another
place in this issue and preserve
this copy of the paper for future
reference. "
A PETTIFOGGING JOCRXAt.
The Oregonian is a great newspa
per that is to - say, it is great in
comparisoa with other Oregon
journals, because it gives a news
service the excellence of which,
outside of politics, is not equalled
by any other in the state. But
right " where its excellence ends
there its pettifogging begins. It
has been the one really great or
gan of republicanism in Oregon.
No matter how grevious the faults
of its party may be in state or nat
ional life, we find the Oregonian at
the critical time hard at work fur
its party bosses and principles, al
though, from time to time, when
the campaign is not raying, it kicks
over the traces. To use plain Eng
lish, politically, the Oregonian is
one of the worst tools the party
has. Its servility to its masters is
only outdone by its misrepresenta
tion of its political opposition. To
the man who knows, all this is ex
cusable; to the man who daily
. from one year to another reads the
paper, it is comprehensible. Kvu
that paper itself is a logical explana
tion of its course. In the pact it
has explained how such a journal
is the mere creature' of coiumercial-
. ism and there is no greater enm
lBercialism today than Hanna pol
itics. This easily makes clear,
why the Oregonian is now, as a
news purveyor, telling about the
many so-called "democratic pa
pers'' which are boiling JJryan;
this easily explains why it dues
not tell its readers as a matter of
news, that the N, Y. World and
the Courier-Journal are supporting
Bryan. It is this pettifogging pol
icy of the Oregonian which makes
it both ridiculous and a splendid
C'orbett organ.
