There is no reason wby Washing
ton County can uot get the first
premium at the State Fair this fall
But it will require hard work and
constant vigilance. There are
other counties in the field, and
they are all struggling to be in the
lead. The exhibit will be only of
this year's crop. Farmers are re
quested to save all worthy samples
and notify Hon. W. H Wehrung,
who will see that they are gather
ed up. A committee will soon be
named and it will be one that will
get there. Speaking of his trip
up the alley, r resident W. H
Wehrung said.
"We first went to McMinnville, where
the county court called a meeting and
appointed a committee to solicit funds

county exhibit. Good men were named
and they ate determined to carry off the
hist prize. From there we went to
Dallas, where we had the same success
and the eood work is going merrily on.
We next visited Monmouth, where we
were shown the splendid farm of Hon,
John B. Stump, who will have "Farm
Kilobit" at the Fair. Mr. Stump bas
l joo acres under cultivation. He baas
herd of 300 registered Cotswold, the
Inn-st flock on the coast; 400 bead of An
goras, one hundred of wbicb are from
the celebrated Latidrum flock, the
foundation of which was imported: 20
head of registered Shorthorns; also well
bred csttle, borses and sheep He har
vested to acres of rape for seed sale and
will net too per acre. Think of that for
diversified farming! And on this same
30 acres he kept 250 pastured sheep from
Mav, 1X99 to January 1900. 1 wish some
of our farmers would go up and aee Mr.
Stump and see what diversified farming
will do. Talk of sheep? Wby, he bas
ewes which have bred twins which sold
for (20 each! This man can tell yon
something about goats and sheep and if
)ou wish to go into this business, it will
pay you to see hini-

Linn and Lane, Marion and Clackamas,

bearty co operation which we received
on the West Side. All are after that
first prize, and for that reason our farm
