The election is over, and things
hare settled down to their usual
serenity. The result, generally, in
this county, has been a vigorous
protest of a whole people agains
brutal politics; against crooked
, work to carry precinct delegations
to a county convention in favor of
a Portland Je or a Portland
, banker.
When a political boss tries to do
these things through the aid of his
benchrueu; when the essence of
decency is forgotten and men are
called vile epithets becau.e they
will not endorse such robbery, then
comes the tst of whether our citi
zenship is reliable or unreliable
Thk Argus has been very c&nful
to state only the truth in these
matters, as has ever been its policy
It depended on respectable citizens
to assert their rights at the polls.
ana nave their votes counted at
the .'general election, even if they
could not be counted at the prima
nes. Thk Argus relied on this,
Its confidence has not been shaken
in the least. The result has shown
us that the masses of the people
of Washington county are honest
. and that they will not brook dis
honesty in political life. The re
- publicans who aided in this grand
, result have shown us that they
hare a regard for decency, and that
they are not to be classed with that
element which does what a boss
says, must be done. They have
shown us that they are not going to
tolerate rottenness, but are going to
have their votes counted, and
that people will assert themselves
when they know their rights are
being assailed. It has been a vict
ory of the people, irrespective of
party, and, for this, it is the grand
er. Thk Argus, against the vehe
ment protests of the two so-called
"republican" papers (but which in
fact by their scurrility and obeis
ance have been nothing but two
scabby intolerant campaign sheets
engineered by the lowest type of a
politicial boss) has appealed with
all iU feeble ability to the people
of Washington, begging a rebuke
to the ungodly practices of pothouse
politicians. Native son, American
born, German American, Swedish
American, and people of all ex
. tractions, commenceu to assure
this piper that the parting of the
ways had come for once. "We will
stay with you," they said, and
' stay, they did. The boss and his
immediate cohorts were downed
and downed so badly that they
will never again crack the party
whip or crook a primary. It was
a victory of the wholepeople of
Washington county. It as due;
it was meet; The Argus in its
meek and humble way contributed
what it could towards the revolt.
Its feeble voice asked for good gov
ernment and tlie sturdy sons, ir
respective of party name, came to
the ratification of pure government.
The Argus is satisfied.
