TBR SPIRIT OF iNTOI.EKAXCK.
The same intolerant spirit that is
waged against Bryan and what he
represents was used against the
' movement of the lovers of liberty
in the earl history of this country ;
the same spirit which fought
Cromwell and his Ironsides; the
same spirit which prompts the
English royalty to crash the inde
pendent spirit of the little handful
of Dutch in South Africa. This is
the spirit which says that the few
shall rale the many and that the
many shall always be subject to
the superior few, who claim the
greatest intelligence and the great
est insight to public affairs. With
this one-sided sentiment stand the
great corporations, the trusts, the
big money lenders, the royalty of
Europe and the corrupt politicians
of America the men who are in
politics for plunder. Human lib
erty of any order or degree is scout'
ed as the essence of anarchy, and
the man who speaks tor rights of
man is heralded as a dangerous
man for the community. Political
platforms in America are to be
written by the few, and the parties
against this method are to be ta
booed.' The rank and file of the
people are tfot to be consulted. The
banks and trusts are to be supreme.
These people are mighty for they
. control the great commerciil .papers
and these are used to frighten those
who have but little time to think
Any assertion that people are or
should be equal before the law is
vy$T$S. met with jeers. The big bosses are
t " v f. rule. The people are to look to
-tsnem tor gumance.jis n any won
der that the common people of the
country are each year losing more
and more voice in the affairs of
this whatwas once a republic?
BRTAK A REPUBLICAN.
Bryan is a republican n yt from a
. Hanna standpoint, but from a
standpoint of human rights analy
sis. He stands for a republican
form of government, a free people
who govern themselves, and with
out the advice of the supporters of
'empire." He stands for liberty
in the Philippines, in Porto Rico
and in the Transvaal. Geography,
reasons Mr. Bryan, has no place in
the ethics of liberty and free insti
tutions where people have brains
and blood to withstand oppression.
Mr. Bryan does not toady imper
ialism. He does not v think that
"kings can do no wrong." He
stands for the highest mead of
human liberty,, either in Porto
'Rico or South Africa, and in this,
in every republican who reveres
the name of Abe Lincoln, he has a
supporter. ' . ' " ;
