BKYAN'S ADDBKSS.
Brvan's address was & masterful
effort. On the money question he
is supported by the ablest logic of
Hon. J. H. Mitchell, on all sides of
the question; on his remarks as to
the Puerto Rican tariff measure
now pending in Congress, he is
supported by the Oregonian; as to
the trusts, he is supported by all
citizens except those who profit by
the formation of truste; his Ameri
canism is unquestioned by the
sturdiest element of our country
People will long remember the ad
drees of Mr. Bryan as one replete
with the spirit of standing for the
highest American ideals. Here
and there you will find a "Ben
Cornelius" or a "Jim Eddy" who
know more than even Mr. McKin
ley, who will tell you that Bryan
"knows nothing." This is all they
have learned from the Oregonian,
and thev are not to be blamed for
their foolishness.
Mr. Bryan is an orator as well
as a statesman. He tells you where
he is; he does not straddle; he goes
to the point; he is no man's "Fri
day." He stands the Jefferson of
today, as Jefferson stood nearly
hundred vears aeo. aeainst the
"Hamiltonr who are ready to sur
render our best institutions to cor
poration undoing. His is the type
of clear headed ness that made
Jefferson's name famous, even
until the present.
THE UNION TICKET.
The Union ticket was nominated
by the largest delegate convention
ever held in Washington county
It was a representative body of peo
ple and the men named for the re
spective offices are representative
citizens, i ne nominations were
not the result of ring rule, nor were
they the creatures of any one man.
The utmost of harmony prevailed
and not a jarring note marred th
occasion. There was no fals
counting in the primaries whicl
selected these delegates; there was-
no teller to count out men wh(
were duly elected. There was nc
"Boss Cornelius" to say whoBbould
be elected or who should not tx
elected. It was pleasant to note
two hundred delegates all working
in harmony, laying aside personal
preferment for the wish of a major
ity. The spectacle of Jasper E
Reeves declining to make the run
for the nomination to the shrieval
ty when he had great strength in
the convention, must have excited
wonder in the minds of men like
Mr. Cornelius and his cohorts. All
this aside, the ticket is a good one
and one which should commend it
self to the vqters of Washingtoi
county. There is not a man on the
ticket but who received the nomi
nation fairly and squarely. No
name before the convention wa
"counted out." Can the ticket pul
up by Mr. Cornelius, have as much
said for it? Not much!

misinfromed in regard to the situ
ation there, as the only informa
tion we are allowed to receive
reaches us through British sources
He says that right and justice is

the work of extermation that is be
ing carried on by the British is the
tnoat criminal and barbarous ever
practiced by a civilized or a savage

National Watchman.
The Dewey candidacy for the
presidency is flat; has evaporated
into moonshine. It is not very
ften that a candidate for the of
fice of president has no party; has
no ideas; and has no standing to
entitle him to the distinction. The
trouble is here: Dewey imagined
that because he sunk a fleet which
was third class he was a popular
hero and could get a national en
dorsement at any time. The na
tion is grateful to Dewey for hie
services as admiral and it has paid
him for those services, but when it
. .i t
comes to me preeiaency ne nas
found that the people are looking
for a statesman, not a naval officer
tnd a man who has spent his life
in a training where war brings the
most successful climax. His can
didacy at this time looks too much
like a "job." Six months ago,
when we were blood crazed, he
might have had the nomination.
At that time he did not know
where he was politically, and he is
no wiser today. But he has found
out that the people are not enthu
siasticover his announcement that
he is a presidential candidate.
C. K. never did stand for Cold Water
anyway, did they, Brother Cline?
Perhaps Mr. McKinley will sometime
discover that the people, also, may take
a notion to exercise a little "plain duty"
and leave him at home.
With A. T. Knox for secretaiy to aid
Benj. Cornelius as a Chairman, the Si
mon crowd in this county have a com
bination which is a thine of beauty and
a joy forever.
The "Queen's Bobby1' has suddenly
discovered that there are still a few
Boers left in South Africa. And those
lories in America are correspondingly
Respondent.
Dewey has not yet taken the nrst row
of presidential copies and the chances
are that he will have to do more cross
ing than did Buller on the Tugela before
he will get that nomination.
The Multnomah republicans have
placed a genuine Corbett ticket in the
field and confidently expect the people
to elect it. As the old man's sack is
of very good length, money will flow
like Weinhard's lager of a Saturday
night. How long will the people of Or
egon endure this sort of thing? And, to
think, too, that our virtuous Governor
says no money is spent in Oregon sena
torial elections.
