GUILTY OP TKEASON.
What a devilish treasonable thing
it it to allow our volunteers to re
turn home before the Fillipinos
have been whipped! What grave
error is it which prompts our ad
ministration friends to bo far for
get imperialism and wanton Je
etruction of volunteers to gain Or
ierital territory, as to commit them
to a weak policy of quitting? Or,
have they discovered the volunteer
is not the man to stand up as a sac
rifice that a few office seekers and
military nincompoops may grow
shoulder knots and wax fat?
The administration has doubt
less discovered that there is no
teason why the lives of volunteers
for one cause should ruthlessly be
forced into subgating a lot of chat
tels, and they are to be released.
There are enough men who are
willing t fight at so much per
fight even if the fight be no labor
of love. These are the meu who
should be put into the Fillipino
swamps and made targets for the
mauser bullets and malarial fevers,
and President McKinley has at
last recognized the fact and is to
send the volunteers home. Now
when the recruiting officers report
slack enlistments let our little can
tankerous 2x4 journalistic ex
pounders of expansion march up
and take their place for transporta
tion as Malay fighters, or forever
hold their peace.
NO CHEAP AMERICAN'S.
There need be no fear but what the
fight of 1900 will be lined up as it
was fh 1896, when the friends of
debased product spent millions of
dollars to elect their administration.
The democrats will not falter and
they will again voice thq crv for a
decent level of averages between the
output of the farmer and the mon
ey it must I1U7. This is a business
proportion entire'y, and one that
has nothing to do with party name?.
The debased product advocates may
be either republican or democrat,
but they have voted the same tick
et when the success of the money-
crats was wanted. Their hope of
success in 1900 is in the nrobabil
ity of their dividing the votes of
those who do not tant cheEp, base
unprofitable farm output. Here
lies their ouly chance. It will be a
battle roys) the trusts, the advo
cates of cheap farm production, the
dear dollar advocates, the advocates
of fifty-cent wheat and low wool
and cotton, as against those whose
betterment lies iu the restoration
of the decent price level. The im
perialistic proposition will not
change the it-suie.

The real reason why our monopoly
organs have been lately proclaim
ing that the silver issue was killed
In 1896, is very apparent. These

upon the credulity of the masses.
They realize that the Hanna pow
er must liquidate, heavily in order
to win in 1900. They know that
the ticket can not be pulled through
' with a merely political manage
ment and expenditure of money.
They fear the vote of the producer,
and they want to do sway with
" Hryan and get the, old Whitney-
Uill combination in control of the
next democratic convention. Know
ing (he futility of open assault up
on those who want prod U(t not ile
I wised, they allege that democracy
ix sure to win if the silver plank
be discanle I. They do this to throw
the watchful off guard.' They sim
ply n re up to their old hicks to
have control of botlr political par
tie and get their desired monetary
legislation no mutter how goes the
uhxtion.
The Uoiieg. will not work. The
rfrnweratic party will stand for bi
C:tlfciii and there will be no de-
generacy. There will be no control
of the true democrats by the Whit
ney-Hills. The rank and file ot
America hp, "regardless of party, re
publican democratic, or populist,
do not want product debased, and
they will not have it debased. Bry
an, if he live, will lead the people
in 15XX) and, we hope, to victory.
But he must do this against the
rich and powerful; ajj-tinst those

Our republican managers will
now love whiskers and unwashed

more shall we hear of the sockless
son-of-a-gun, as a "pop." lie is
now a patriot of the Mark Hanna
school; a statesman from Goose
Run; a shining example of the pal
ladium of good government, and,
but let him go, and God bless him
for his action.
Let no citiien deceive himself
that Lyman J. Gage's rag baby dol
lar is dead. It is only sleeping.
The bank patriots are rather loth
to keep the thing dangling before
the public, but it is to be resurrect
ed as soon as it is safe to so do.
Altho it is traitorous to say so,
The Spanish-American war has not
been void of signal and singular
achievements. It has introduced
to a sensation-loving public, Broth
er Abner McKinley; it has shown
us that charity and the beef trust
is over all in the retiring of Egan
on $7,500 per year as a disgrace; it
has evolved from obscurity a kirs-
iog Hobson, the only man who
could successfully gratify, in an os
culatory way, Honolulu belles; and
it has alto given ten million "sav
ages" at a nominal cost of but two
dollais each.
The Indian war veterans have
pledged themselves to vole fur no
candidate for congress who shall
not advocate pensions for them.
This amounts to nothing, in the
light of the ast. Candidates for
congress and political platforms
are always pledging these old vet
erans their rightful aid, but they
never get it. The thing to do is
for Washington and Oregon to state,
pension these old veteran defender.-,
and at once. Then push con
gress for a relief bill and let the na
tion assume the pay roll.
The democratic party could gel
the money it needs for a presicltn
tial campaign if it will let the cor
porations write its platform. It is
not going to be sold out, h.iwever,
as the "cheap product" people de
sire. Base farm production is not
American, and the democrats need
expect no support from producers
if they lock arms with the combi
nations and money trust. There
is already one monopoly party.
That is enough. If we are to have
monopoly rule, let us support the
Hanna ticket from the first.
There is considerable com
plaint going the rounds that the
Woodmen of the World ran an ex
cursion into Portland 011 Memorial
Day and gave a series of entertain
ments, the net proceeds of which
are to go towards building a state
monument for the Oregon dead of
the war just ended. The probab
ility is that the Woodmen meant no
discourtsey to the G. A. It., what
ever, and in all likelihood they
th ught the Decoration Day of the
future would be an universal date
upon which decorating nnd mourn
ing services could be divided in
mi miry of the dead of both thf
war of the 60's and the later war.
After all, the Bradley Marling,
wealthy New Yorkers with bonds toclip,
did quite the proper thing when ihey
recently became tubjects of Great
Britain. They spent the most of their
lime, socially, tufthunling in England,
while the male members of the fttnih
preached base product. Some sense of
the amenities of such a paradoxical
course is apparently in the n, for they
have done the right thing, und thut
which is consUleiit with their desires.
