OUR SOLDIER DEAD.
Decoration Day, 1899, is now his
tory. The day has an added signif
icance this year over those of the
paat, for there are newer dead over
whom to sorrow and remember.
The practice of meeting once each
year and offer devotion to the mem
ory of those who have lost their
)ivea in their count y's service is
an ennobling one. Go back in mem
ory to that little handful of Amer
icana who offered up their lives
' that a republic might be establish
ed; bo back to the sixties when
thousands of Americans gave their
lives that this republic might be
perpetual; then come down to the
warjust closed and you will find
.that Memorial Day has a broader
' significance. The Spanish war was
' the occasion ot a sentiment inspir
ed by a Closer bond of union than
our nation has heretofore enjoyed,
v It started as a war for human lib
tfatfon and we have every reason
" to ftonor those who lost their Ima
Iri this trouble with a spirit as de
vout and pride as deep as do we
those who passed aw.iy in the con
flicts of the long ago.
The soldier dead of our country
have never before bad so universal
. a national memorial as in the year
1899, for the south, as well, has a
common cause in the offering up
her sons in the latest conflict. This
universal sentiment of sorrow and
glory has made memorial day more
acred and more national. Section
, alism is swept away and the na
tion's true heart mourns over the
mounds of our revolutionary fath
ers; the mounds of our defenders in
1812; the resting places of the Mex
ican war veterans, the slabs sacred
to the memoiy of those who wore
the blue, and later, those who
. struck and lost their lives for the
benefit of those who were not of tin.
And, for those who wore the gray
and died, the tear for them has no
touch of bitterness from him who
wore the blue. It is well.
THB INDIAN WAR VETERAN.
The Argus is pleased to note that
it is receiving hearty support from
the interior press, generally, upon
the original proposition of this pa
per to have the r tates of Washing
ton and Oregon at once pension the
Indian war veterans. The Argus
wants to see every candidate for
the legislature in either state plede
ed to this act of tardy justice. Our
old defenders are certainly entitled
to a pension; they deserve it; and
it is not right: not loyal; not gen
erous; and not patriotic to longer
delay a recognition so worthy an
so exigent. Let these sister states
remember the old Indian war vet'
erans; and at once. They are paws'
ing away one by one, neglected tc
the last; forgotten insofar as a prop
er conception of the valorous de-
fense is concerned. Let us make
'their last days easier and if con
fess see tit to give the I wo states
relief, it shall be well. If not, we
shall have had the satisfaction oi
, Jiaving. altho' tardily, discharged
"an obligation sacred to our houor

r, regardless of partisan bias, to
force this faght from now on until
the next legislature is elected.

What, our imperialists really
want is a large militarism and ex
pensive government a government
by Krag-Jorgensens. This is the
kind of government they want both
at home and abroad and this is the
kind of government desired by the
royalists of the revolution. Broad
civil li!erty i not their wish. They
are intolerant i f liWriy. The tax
payer hi s too many rights, and pays
too little for them. Our imperial
ists would have plenty of oflices
and they will find the timber to
611 them. They want a big army,
for this will make plenty of govern
ment debt. They want to keep the
tax paying classes down. They
would like to make the ordinary
citizen "advance and give the couii"
tersign" when going to the country
postoffice or to the cross-roads gro
cery. This would smack of em
pire; of olden times; of huge debt,
etc; of rulers, an I by the way, of a
blind, dumb citizenship, one easily
to be handled by the jewcraft.
DEWEY, CHIEF!
Dewey is coming home at his leis
ure. Dewey is right. He wants
to wait until the fawning, flattering
flapdoodles, fry in their own sus
pense. Dewey has some sense.
He is not a mouth fighter. He is
not a Hobson. He realizes that he
has drawn a good round salary for
many years that he might be able!
to direct vessels and guns if it
should come. He did what a com
mander should do, no more, no
less. That he is, however, above
other commanders, is shown by
the fact that he isn't always throw
ing bouquets at himself.
Unlike Roosevelt, who turned
his bluster and freak service into
political buncombe, Dewey prefers
to let the people know that he is
a part of the nation and that valor
should have its respect not fawn
ing. Dewey's course is a stinging
rebuke to the tuft-hunting and
knock-kneed aristocracy who want
to give him a house, a horse, and
God knows what, for doing his
plain duty while his salary was
still in farce.
JUST CAUSE FOR ALARM.
The creditcombinations of Europe
and America are growing alarmed
over the American political situa
tion. They are perfectly willing
their money shall be loaned at a
much cheaper rate of interest, pro
vided the return of low interest
shall buy as much in the markets
as the return of high interest. They
are quoting the "great increase in
the production of gold," telling
about the "great wave of prosper
ity," while our farmers continue to
sell wheat at 50 cts., woo! at de?
perately low prices, and cotton
down to the low water mark.
They are afraid of the next elec
tion and want the money issue out
of the way. They are howling for
"imperialism" and with choking
sob, tell us how our opposition is
treason. They urge civilization of
our Fillipinos and they are ours
for did not we buy them at two dol
lars per head, Againaldo and all
and tell us it is a shame to not ex
tend to them the beauties of Amer
icanism." But they are finding
that America's producers are not
worrying about the Fillipinos. Tak
ing their own words for it, the Fil
lipino is too ornery to worry over.
The producer is wanting a profita
ble level of prices and dfceires to
strike a blow at the trust machine
now in control of the administra
tion. The producers realize that
the bankercrata have in control the
managers of the republican party,
and the rank and file of that party
are getting tired of low prices for
all producers must sell and high
prices for all they must buy. The
revulsion of feeling is getting to be
seriou 8 and it is no wonder our
trust organs are growing desperate
in their methods.
