The next day after Wash ington's birthday a chap represent ing himself as a wooduhopper went to Illinium sen's store, slated that he wanted to buy some provision and clothing and that he had a check wherewith to pay for the same. Mr. llasmussen acquiesced, sold him thirteen dollar, worth of goods, re ceived a twenty-dollar check, gave the stranger seven dollars in change and thought everything all right. Tho check was sent to Portland. where it was protested as a forgery, tho Savings and Security trust Company averring that L r Chiius, whose name was signed to the check, had no balance. The check was a very clumsy forgery, drawn in fav or of "W L Hendry and signed by "L P Chillis," endorsed on its back by "W L Hendry." The letter "L in all three signatures, has the same uncommon characteristics, showing that one hand wrote the check and made the endorsement. The Gaston Milling Company recently shipped two car-loads of flour to Portland for the Chinese market. The com pany seems to be doing an excell ent business and giving entire satisfaction. Weather permitting, Assessor Wilcox willJiave four field men out next week, making assessments of the county. The appointments are: Wm. Pointer, A. A. Morrill, L, C. W'alkel- and E. I. Kuratli. Hare first cousin from the father's branch and second from the moth er's family tree. Mr. Hare says that the Simon-Corbett contingent in Clatsop county has no standing whatever, and that the Astorian, the solid goldite daily, has no influ ence. This coming from a Fulton republican, is highly significant. Herbert McKinney, a son of New ton McXinney, is down from Was co, Sherman county, seeking medi cal advice. He was attacked with typhoid fever last fall and as a re sult, is yet very weak. He says his father has left Waitsburg and is now in the Colville mining district. Greer's is the place to buy gar den and field seeds. The eleven year old daughter of Mr. C. Kehse, of Farmington, died Tuesday evening, of pulmonary trouble. The little one was buried today. Mr. rehse came to this county from California, about five years ago, for the sake of the little one's health. The masquerade at Bethany last Saturday evening was pronounced a splendid success by the several who attended trom tmisooro ana vicinity. Batchelder, ot near Lennox, while descending a flight of steps leading into the dairy room, fell and broke her right arm, just' above the elbow, causing an oblique iracture.
