Bryan, Of Nebraska. FOR VICE-PRESIDENT. ARTHUR SEWALL, Of Maine. A QUESTIONABLE PATRIOTISM. Those New York money specula tors who ure now endeavoring to bolster up the gold reserve are sub stantially the same parties who for pcveral months have been assault ing the same. This action, consid ered in the light of common sense is but for the nonce feeding up the goose that lays for them the golden egg. The gold standard papers, with an insistence which has no other interpretation than to call the masses a set of fools, call this actioi patriotism." The truth of the. matter w It has no rdaUai,slrjr(l3 T" go'" generally, t 1e luiitLttiaaa - " "ave already gone so - fur that the people will rise in wrath and do away with a system which means bonds in the time of peace. This tra (Being in bonds and re peated assaults on the gold reserve are all necessary adjuncts to a con tinuance of the gold standard, and the Jewish "patriots" feel thai the people might resent these repeated assaults, being that an election is so close to hand. The assumption that their move to protect the treas ury is patriotism is so very ridicu lous, so completely an assumption that the average American citizen is a fool, that even a "free silver fool" can see through this bit of demagogy. It is such questionable patriotism that will cause the com mon people to vote for Y J. Bryan for president. WANT TO BE FAIR. Thk Argus wants to be fair and for the benefit of its readers will give the only available gold stand ard arguments now running in press editorials, showing that re publicans are right on the money question. In this it is not meant. the average republican voter, who always wants to vote right, but the leaders who propose to hold the re publicans, rank and file, by the nose and vote them straight by euch arguments as these: "Free Silver Lunacy." 'Fifty Cent Dollars." "Anarchists." "Fools." "Repudiationiste." STRONG CONVERT TO BRYAN. Ex-Congressman Bingham, an Ohio Republican, Bolts His Tarty. Cadiz, Ohio, Julv 26. John A. Bing bam. one of the oldest republican lead ers in the state, has bolted the ticket and will support Bryan and Sewall. Mr. Bingham was a leader in congress dur ing the war, and was United States Min ister to Japan for eight years under President Grant. He represented the government in the prosecution of Mrs. Hon of President Lincoln and assisted the prosecution in the impeachment of I Andrew Johnson. i Mr. Bingham was a power in the land during the darkest days of the war. He I was Lincoln's trusted friend, and an or- ator second to none in either house of j congress. He is now a very old man. I He cannot possibly hope for any ben', fits to tnmsell personally by ttie patriotic po sition he has taken; but his vote is ll.e voice of the honest people who desire nothing but the general good. When such a man as John A. Bingham is at his time of life compelled to leave the re publican party because it has betrayed the people, it is time that younger men who have the wor'd before them should reflect before they cast a vote for Mc Kinley, which is a vote for the enslave ment of the people including them s Ives. Silver Knight-National Watch man. SHERMAN IN 1800. "The contraction of the currency is a far more distressing operation than the senators suppose. Our own and other na tions have gone through that operation before. It is not possible to take that voyage without the sorest distress. To every person except a capitalist out of debt, or a salaried officer or annuitant, it is a period of loss, danger, lassitude of trade, fall of wages, suspension of en terprise, bankruptcy and disaster. It means ruin of all dealers whose debts are twice their business capital, though one-third less than their total property. It means the fall of all agricultural pro duction, without any great reduction of taxes. What prudent man would dare to build a house, a railroad, a factory or a barn with this certain fact before him.'' SHERMAN IN 1896. "Pile on your distress! I am no common jay of a farmer. Im fixed. Let her rip. It pays to represent your people in congress." WHAT JOHN H. MITCHELL, OREGON'S U. 8. SENATOR, SAID IN 1894. "In my judgment, that part)', whether republican or democratic, which goes into the next presidential contest, either pledged to the single gold standard, or a platform containing a broad straddle on the money question, one susceptible of different constructions, in the expec tation of deceiving the great majority of the people, and with a candidate who is unwilling to be understood as being unalterably opposed to the single gold standard in this country, and in favor of the full constitutional' demonetization of silver, the coinage of both gold i.r.d silver on equal terms at the existing ratio, will hi -" j. This, and supported by his fen ate record, is Senator Mitchell's record and position on the money question. According to the repub lican press howlings. Hon. .1. II. Mitchell must be an anarchist! But is be? Is he not one of Ore gon's best representatives in the na tional law-making body. England, with a gold stock many times that of her silver, since 1816 has nearly a dozen times suspend ed specie payment. Indeed, after. the Baring Bros, failed a few years ago, the chancellor of the exchec quer announced that owing to the increased competition for gold, a return to bi-metallism was advis able this is his message to Par liament. Under the gold standard since 1816, England's ISo.OOO land -j, Ani t we Rre askp;d..her; in these United States to support alely the farmers are to i ote air? in this question. How the republicans are kicking because the democrats have put up a man whon, the populists can sup port! And now it is ''popocrats" to all who support Bryan? But we would ask our republican friends what they would call (he men who j supported Ihe republican-populist, ticket at Monday s election in Ala bama? The facetious nin compoop should be called off by bis gold standard advocates and euppo'tcrs before be completely ruins what some ot them honestly believe to be an honest cause. Every old line life insurance company has made enormous prof its for years and every old line company is today so "honest" that they don't want to see free coinage of silver, because they will have to pay their claims in "50 cent dol lars," which they say they will do. They would be immeasurably glad to pay their claims in "50 cent dol lars." They would be pleased to do it. They know however that this is all buncombe, this 50 cent business, and if thtre were any thing in it they would not be right ing it. The truth of the matter is there is a great per cent of British capital in these life insurance com panics and water can't rise above its own level. Do not let the word "republican" or "protection" fool you. This is a year when a man will ni port an American system of linaiice, -r a Britith system. McKinley once said, "A mortg age is evidence of prosperity.'' This was when McKinley knew he was a mortgaged candidate; hence his deduction. Until the money question is settled, we are opposed to any agitation for further changes in our tariff laws, except such as are necessary to make up the deficit in revenue, caused by the adverse de cisioii of the supreme court us to tin income tax."
