ing, but these men will vote right,
self-confident that a party which
ever has beeu right, though losing
all for many years, can not be
wrong on the great question; and
that a party which for years has
been the agencv of monopoly and
trusts, and is now for the perpetu
ation of the gold standard, can iot,
by virtue of its past, and even
present existence and power, be
right on the money issue. The
same corporation instincts which
plead for. a high protective tarifl
plead for the gold standard. Is
this not so? Without the high
tariff the gold standard cannot
exist. Has not this been fully
exemplified by our present admin
istration in its efforts to keep up
the gold reserve? And for what?
To redeem currency notes and
silver certificates. Is there nnv
so-called "sound money" men who
can gainsay this? Outside of the
financial question, which is now
the uppermost in American aiinds,
js there a democratic supporter
who will raise up his voice and say
that a tariff for revenue is a
failure? that for years and ytars
he has followed false gods, a blind
leadership? 1 It takes money, the
result of labor, to pile up a gold
reserve and keep it there for re
demption purposes, and nothing
but so extreme a tariff as will
prove almost prohibitory can main
tain the present gold standard in
these days of dull glow of patri
otism. But the question is not

which requires courage and study,
comprehension of immutable laws,
reasoning from cause to effect, and
the party to which a man has
hitherto adhered will be as noth
ing. The welfare of the whole
people is at stake. People will go
to the polls next November, and

the gold standard. Because a dem
ocratic tariff fell short of providing
government expenses and meeting
the repeated assaults upon the ex
chequer for gold, the republicans
now call the administration a "rec
ord of unparelleled dishonor, disas
ter and incompetency." This is a
demonstration purely republican,
and now they are asking democrats
to repudiate democracy and support
a man who stands ss the implaca
ble foe of any and everything dem
ocratic. And, sorry are we to ad
mit, there are many democrats who
can't see that the gold standard ai d
high tariff are brother abomina
tions which are inimical to the wel
fare of any nation. To feed the
raids upon the U. S. treasury there
is need for more than a McKinley
tariff. In the future there will be
more and more of the assaults, and
"sound money" democrats are now
asked by republicans to support a
policy that has thrown disrepute
upon a democracy.

is unwilling to be understood as being
unalterably opposed to the single gold
standard in this country, and in favor
of the full constitutional' demonetization
of silver, the coinage of both gold and
silver on equal terms at the existing

"A golddollar and goldcoin generally,
which have been appreciated largely, as
has our gold dollar since the demoneti
zation of silver, a dollar which prior to
its demonetization could be bought with
three-fourths of a bushel of wheat, or
four pounds of wool, and which now
costs three bushels of wheat, and twenty
pounds of wool, is not au honest, but a
dishonest dollar."

considerably worried over the fat-

force Europe to international usage
of silver in order to protect the in
tensts of their . manufacurcs and

responding full in the prices of
commodities produced by the peo
ple; a heavy increase in the burden
of taxation, and of all debts, nub
ile md private; the enrichment of
the money lending classes at home
and abroad; paralysis of industries
and impoverishment of the people.
We are unalterably opposed to
the single gold standard, which has
locked fast the prosperity of an in
dustrious people in the paralysis
of hard times. Gold monometal
ism is a British polity, founded
upon British greed for gain and
power, and its general adoption has
brought other nations into financial
servitude to London. It is not on
ly un-American, but anti-American,
ai d it can be fastened upon
the United states only by the sti
fling of that indomitable spirit and
love of liberty which proclaimed
our political independence in 1776
and won it in the war of the revo
lution. We demand the immediate res
toration of the free and unlimited
coinage ot gold and silver at the
present legal ratio of 16 to 1,
without wailing for the aid or con
sent of any other nation. We de
mand that the standard silver dol
lar shall be a full legal tender,
equally with gold, for all debts,
public and private, and we favor
such legislation as will prevent the
demonetization of any kind of I.!-
gal-tender money by private con
tract. We are opposed to the policy
and practice of su rendering to the
holders of the obligations ' of the
United States the option rM rved by
law to me government ot re'ieeming
such obligations in either silver or
gold coin.
BOND ISSUES.
We are opposed to the issuing of
interest bearing bonds of the Unit
ed States in lime of peace, and con
demn the trafficking with banking
syndicates, which, ir. exchanre for
bonds at an enormous profit to
themselves .supply the federal treas
ury with gold to maintain the pull
cy of gold monumetalism.
Congress alone has the power to
coin and issue money ,and President
Jackson declared that this power
could not be delegated to corpora
tions or individuals. We therefore
demand that the power to issue
notes be taken from the banks, and
JJiat all paper shall be issued di
rectly by the treasury department.
We hold that tariff duties should
be levied solely for the purpose of
rev nue, Hurt that taxation should
be limited by the needs of the gov
ernment, honestly and economical
!y administered.

We denounce as disturbing to bus
iness the republican threat to re
rtore the McKinley law, which has
been twice condemned by the peo
ple in national elections.'and which,
enacted under the false plea of pro
tection to home industry, proved a
prolifjo breeder of trusts and monop
olies, enriching the few at the ex
pense of the many, restricted trade
and deprived the producers of the
American staples of access to their
natural markets. Until the money
question is settled, we are opposed
in any agnation lor nirioer changes
in our tana laws, except such as are
necessary to make up the deficit in
revenue, caused bv the adverse de
cision of the supreme court us to
thf income tax."
