Tho.se people who have s badly been wanting an "American" policy. in the administration can now have, It. President Cleveland, ever con- j scrvative, has waited until the time ; was ripe for expression, and 1 ue day sent in a special message to congress, touching on the Venejue lan question. It was distinctively American, devoid of jingo, full of fact, and vet not Bensational. Even tin republicans in the sanafe ap plauded, led by Chandler. The document was such a one as is rare ly sent to the legislative bodies from a president, and it puts the party now. clamoring a1out the adminis tration's weak foreign policy, figura tively speaking, "over a barrel." If congress "endorses the message, it endorses the execution, it indorses the democratic regime to a great ex tent. If it refuse to act on the sug gestion it wilt be evident that all which has been said by its mem bers was for effect only. It was a good message, from a sturdy Amer can, American in tone, and it is now timely that jack-knife republi can editors tell us the president ia a good duck hunter. ; , The Grand Jury, recently dis charged did riot follow their prede cessors in at least one thing. The old'structure which stands back of the court house, and which is used for the detention of accused while awaiting trial, hns so many times been condemned by such bodies with the same result, perhaps this one thought it was time to dispose of the annual chestnut, and save breath. Of course the county needs a jrtil. To support such a pen as riow exists is inconsistent with the progression which marks the man agement of all other county busi ness, and in a county of over 15. 600 people, is ludicrous as well as unsafe. If prisoners are left out of the celjs for art hour, without hav ing a guard, in that hour they easi ly could cut through the old shell and be in camp miles away, as did those who took f renrh leave las summer. As long as such places must be maintained for the follow ing of the statute, let them at least be safe and comfortable. As a matter of fact, Cleveland's message on the Venezuelan affair was a political move, insofar that it was proper, politic, American, and entirely expedient. It was not to twist the British lion's fail, but a justifiable alarum, calling to the nation the fact that a principle to the people, very dear, was about to be brushed aside in the endeavor of an European power to claim dispu ted territory on American soil by virtue of its superior strength. The president hns stated the matter in manner devoid of bluster, and the rising generation can now perceive the fact that patriotism is some thing on which bo political party has a corner, as not a few in each community endeavor to teach. How must the spirits ot Jackson and Lincoln on each other beamed on hearing republican plaudits to a democratic president's message! If Congress follows the sugges tions of Cleveland ns to the Monroe Doctrine and the rehabilitation of our national currency system, it will lie but republican endorsement 1. . .. , of administration ideas. If they do not, it is safei to say they will do nothing. Inasmuch as the repub lics ns have persisted in saying the democratic party has done nothing, it will be a hard matter for them to explain, either of the two conditions which will obtain in next campaign, to wit: why they followed Cleve land's advice, or, why they idled away their time. "Allen 0. Thurman," "The Old Roman," is dead. The country hoe lost a profound and loyal states man and tha Democratic party, a promoter and protector. It was ueh men at Allen G. Thurman wfio loroved to the cOmrnrin wealth Mint luero crn yet w poruy in ; politics nmlhoiior in statesmanship. V, ... ,, . . j I? rt n, ...... n (hi. 11 hflM lltH 1 i-yi - uiuiij j.is?
