Society is busily preparing for the yuletide and the shops for a number of days have been bright with the season's dec orations of greens and red ribbon bows. Many of the younger set who are attending colleges and boarding schools will be home for their vaca tion. Looking over the social cal endar one finds innumerable Christ mas dinners with but relatives and immediate families scheduled for that day. , Many attractive dances will be given Christmas night.. One of the smartest events of the coming week will be the subscrip tion dance Tuesday evening. The Waverley club will be the scene of this affair, which will be attended by a large group of the debutant set and a number of young married folk. Several dinner parties will precede this affair. The Arts and Crafts eociety in conjunction with the Drama league will present a series of plays after the new year, at the Woman's build ing, under the supervision of Mrs. Dent' Mowrey.- The first play of the series will be "Shepherd in the Dis tance," to be given Monday, January 29. An interesting feature of thU production will be the scenery which was painted by the noted ar tist Herman Rossi at the time of his last visit here. The committee of arrangements includes Mrs. Ferdi nand Smith, chairman; Mrs. Lucy Dodd Ramberg r and Miss Phyllis Muriden. Mrs. Fred S. Belcher wil. be in charge of the costumes, as sisted by Mrs. Evelyn Rigier Walker and Miss Clementine Hirsch. Mrs. Frederick P. Morey is chairman of the dramatic section of the Arts and Crafts society. Her committee in cludes Mrs. Edwin Seally Parsons, Miss Margaret Dillingham, Mrs. Fol ger Johnson and Edgar E. Piper Jr. 0 , Mrs. Frank Loomis Beach was the inspiration for a tea Tuesday aft ernoon when her sister-in-law, Mrs.' T. Henry Boyd, and her sister. Miss Louise r Boyd, entertained. Yellow decorations were used in the living and dining rooms. Mra Forrest" Fisher, Mrs. Frank Kerr, Mrs. A: S. Patulla, Mrs. Wallace McCamant, Mrs. Lawrence Philips and Mrs. David Hogan presided at the tea table. The receiving line included the guest of honor and the hostesses. Assisting in the rooms were Mrs. Jay Russell Coffey, Mrs. Leonard Wilson, Mrs. Harold Sanford, Mrs. James Derr Jr., Mrs. Aldon Furnish, Mrs. Dale Hinkle, Mrs. E. A. Valen tine, Mrs. George N. Woodley and Mrs. J. W. Hammond. ' Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Pratt of New York city were visitors in 5 WW --111 v-'" - ' ' ' ' Portland last week as the house guests of Mrs., Helen Ladd Corbett and were entertained at a number of informal affairs. They were the guests of honor at a dinner at which Mr. and Mrs. William M. Ladd were hosts. They departed Thursday eve ning for San Francisco, accompanied by Rodney L. Glisan, Dr. W. A. dim ming and H. C. Jefferds and will be joined by a party of New TorkeTS there and will depart on the Laconia December 10 for "the orient, r the first lap in the world tour. Mrand Mrs. Herbert Pratt and their two daughters of New York will be among the members of the party. Mr. and Mrs. "Varnel D. C. Beach are passing two ' weeks at their country place near Salem. ..' A throng of society folk attended the Symphony concert Wednesday evening. Mrs. Mary Scarborough entertained that evening with a box party at the concert. ,. . Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Leiter have re turned from . an extended visit in San Francisco. i . , . . V; A number of society folk motored to Vancouver barracks for the dance given by the officers' club Friday evening. . Mr. and Mrs. Everett Babcock left last Saturday for Los Angeles, where they will make their home. They will be greatly missed by their many friends here. . . Colonel and Mrs.-John Leader, ac companied by their children, will sail from Montreal this month to -make their home in England. , Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Clark Neil of Ardencraig, have departed for J! Phoenix, Ariz., to pass the winter. Tney will first visit in San Diego and Los Angeles. A smart dance was given last night by Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Mac Gregor. . Mr. and Mrs. Julius L Meier have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Jean Meier, to Joseph Ehrman of San Francisco. Miss Meier recently returned from an extended trip abroad with her par ents and sister. Miss Elsa Meier, and brother, Jack Meier. Mr; Ehrman is a graduate of the University of California and was recently in Port land as a member of the bridal party at the Heller-Meier wedding. Miss Meier is visiting in San Fran' Cisco. No date has been set for the wedding. " : , ,.;-.
