Prices at Finish Generally Show
Gains and Belief Is Crisis
, Will Be Averted.
BY ALEXANDER DANA NOTES.
(By Chicago Tribune Leased: Wire.
NEW YORK. Aug. 5. So far as their
action of today was evidence, tho finan
cial markets .ended the week with, a feel
ing of confidence that tha Issue of tho
Impending conterences, on our own iii
deadlock and on the German repara
tions, will avert the much predioted cri
sis. On the stock exchange, notwith
standing the usual tendency of a week
end market to run counter to the gen
eral movement of tho week, prices ad
vanced again, the railway shares lead
ing the moderate recovery, and with
closing prices quite generally at the
best. Comparison of values for the com
pleted week would not suggest to the
casual observer a period of doubt and
apprehension. . Net advances-of 2 and 3
points were numerous and net declines
so few as hardly to count in the reck
oning. , .
Today's attitude of tho stock market
waa naturally taken in connection with
tho intimations from Washington that
labor leaders were again in conference
with the government. The firmness
which, prevailed in foreign exchange
rates (except in the German mark) also
was equally interpreted in line with the
much calmer and more conciliatory dis
patches from Parts. An advance of
Sterling to a rate touched only on thres
days during the past six weeks was
perhaps a logical response to the chan
cellor of the exchequer' positive -restatement
of bis government's purpose
to resume Interest payment on the debt
to our treasury.

CATTLE BUSINESS IS ON MEND
Industry at Bottom o'f Depression and
Upward Tread in 8igbt.
SAN FRANCISCO, Cal.. Aug. 5. The
cattle business has reached the bottom
of a period of depression, and the next
seven or eight years should see an up
ward climb in prices and profits to cat
tlemen, according to a survey of tha his
tory of cattle production made by the
California Cattlemen's association, which
predicts that relatively high prices will
ba reached again in 1930.
The association believes that the short-

result from the organization of . meat
councils in large cities and from the ad
vertising of meat by the National Live

to be a real shortage of beef.
Beef prices were high in 1871. 1S8S,
1900 and 1919, and low In 1ST7. 1895 and
1909, the association reports, making reg
