THE SUNDAY OREGONIAX, PORTLAND, JUNE 25, 1923 11 KLAN minrn isi Trvin VllHbLU Hi I CAhD Senate Candidate Defends Organization. lNCUMBENTMS OPPOSED Robert L. Henry,' ex-ODeader in Congress, Declares Motives of Ku Klux Are High. BT MARK SULLIVAN. (Copyright, 1922, by New York Evening Post. Inc. Published by arrangement.; WASHINGTON, D. C, June 24. (Special.) The Texas senatorial pri mary, in which the Ku Klux Klan has come openly and strongly to the front, will be held on the 18th of next month. The sitting senator, Charles A. Culberson, Is a candidate for re-election. He has come out squarely against the Ku Klux Klan. Robert 1m Henry is seeking Senator Culberson's seat and is seeking it as a defender, exponent and leader of the Ku Klux Klan. That the public outside of Texas may realize the size this issue has come to have in Texas, it should be added that this Ku Klux Klan can didate is a man of importance in his state. He has served 20 years in congress and in the course of that service came to positions of high leadership both in congress and in the national organization of the democratic party. Klan Is Defended. Because of the interest and im portance of this .senatorial contest and because in various sections of the country the Ku Klux Klan is becoming more widespread as an or ganization and a more frequent ele ment in politics, it will be useful and informative to print the follow ing extracts from one of Mr. Henry's campaign speeches V 'What is the Ku Klux Klan about A which we hear so much? I am going to tell you. The tenets of the Chris tian religion. This does not mean that you must be a Christian to join the klan, but it does mean that you must believe .that the Christian re ligion is right. We are for Chris tianity. I believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in Jesus Christ. The klan believes in Christianity. "And the klan believes in 'white supremacy' that is, that the Anglo Saxon white race shall forever be supreme in this republic. Negro Equality Opposed. "The klan does not believe in ne gro equality. There are many of us old-fashioned folks who still believe that the white man is just as good as the negro, if not a little bit bet ter. There are citizens throughout this country who believe in social equality, some of them white, but I do not nor do the people of Texas and this part of the country believe in it, nor will they ever accept such a doctrine as 'negro social equality.' "The klan believes in 'closer rela tionship between capital and labor,' and we believe that capital ought to be brought closer to labor, and that the disputes between capital and labor should be lessened; that something ought to be accomplished In that direction. The klan does not believe that there should be any class legislation or that the labor ing man should be arrayed against the wealthy class or the moneyed classes of this country. Both are necessary for the existence of each other and therefore the klan has FRENCH COURTS OBJECT TO MANY AMERICAN DIVORCES Actual Residence to Be Required and Applicant Also Must Explain Why Change Is Made. PARIS, June 24. (By the Asso ated Press.) American law yers in Paris are being deluged with inquiries as to the procedure necessary to obtain a divorce in French courts, the correspondence being provoked by the number of 'divorces of Americana which have been granted in France recently. The absolute secrecy with which decrees are obtained appears to be the features that attracts, but French judges are beginning to set their face against the growing prac tice of Americans of liquidating their family troubles in France. The courts .stand firmly on two statutory provisions that the ap plicant must, have a real residence In Paris, not a mere make-believe residence, and that legal reason must- exist wny the applying Ameri can was unable to procure a divorce in his or her own country. Secrecy is guaranteed by the laws prohibiting publication of details that are connected with divorce cases. Victor or vanquished, Wimbledon will be the last singles tournament for Mile. Suzanne Lenglen, unless she changes her mind. She is de termined to wipe out her defeat at Forest Hills at the hands -of Mrs. Molla Bjurstedt Mallory, the Amer ican champion, after which her father has ordered her to abandon singles tournament play. She said recently to a friend: "I don't want to give the American correspondents another chance to shake the cocoa nut tree at me." Classic dances are coming back next season by edict of French dancing masters. Only three new steps have passed their censorship, DOES IT ALWAYS RAIN IN PORTLAND? CERTAINLY NOT Days of Sunshine Exceed Days of Showers by 167 in Year, Record Kept By Resident Shows. BY MRS. F. A. BRECK. MANY people say it always rainj in Portland. But this is an ungracious way to talk, and is far from the facts if they would take note of them. Just to satisfy my own. curiosity I resolved to keep a daily record of the weather for a year. I indicated on the calendar opposite each date rain or sunshine or cloud, or all three, or perhaps two. I find that the record for two days was unintentionally omitted that for one day in July and another T n October. had four days of rain, eight days of part sunshine, showing that nearly inserted that' principle among its tenets. Is there anything wrong about that? "The klan believes in the "protec tion of pure womanhood' and the sanctity of the home. Does the sen ior senator think the klan ought to be destroyed because it believes in those things, and does the distin guished gentleman, Mr. Thomas, think that it ought to be reformed and that principle changed? If he does I hope and pray that he and I may never serve in the United States senate at the same time. "The present klan is based upon as holy and noble a purpose as was the klan of our fathers after the civil war. "Two other principles are "pre venting the causes of mob violence and lynching.' The purpose of the klan is to prevent those things. 'Prevention of fire and destruction of property by lawless elements.' A fight against the I. W. W. and the bolshevists of this country. That is one of the principles. " 'Limitation of foreign immigra tion.' That is one of the greatest principles of this organization, and the time has come when this coun try should rise up and say to the world: 'We are going almost com pletely to shut our doors against the speckled progeny of those peo ple who are coming from the slums of European centers, and they shall not become citizens of our country.' Other Principles Named. " "Fhe upholding of the constitu tion pf the United States' is another of the principles of the klan. Is there any objection to that? " "The sovereignty of states' rights is another cardinal principle. We come to the freedom of speech and of the press, and we all stand for that as embodied in the bill of rights. It is necessary for the pres ervation and perpetuity of our in stitutions. Here I come to another vital and momentous principle as enunciated in their creed. They be lieve in the 'separation of church and state." Our forefathers came to this new world fleeing for the priv ilege of exercising religious free dom. They came here and founded this great republic and wrote in our constitution that the right to wor ship God according to our own con science should forever be guaran teed. I believe in religious freedom and that the church and state should forever be separated. "I' have enumerated to you just about all the principles of the Ku Klux Klan. Candidly, is there a single one of them to which you can object, whether you are a klansman or not? Is there an American citizen who will object to one of those prin ciples enunciated In that creed of the klan? Fight Is Foreseen. "I believe it as firmly as I believe there is a God above that the Ku Klux Klan is a menace and an ob struction to a great religious organ ization in this country and is stand ing in their way; and I refer to the Roman Catholic church. "We are going to have to fight for our religion itself. We are go ing to have to struggle to preserve our free schools and give our chil dren the benefit of universal educa tion. "The senior senator says 'the klan must be destroyed' and he must, be sent back, to the United States sen ate. But the federal government cannot deal with: that question. He wouldn't have any power to deal with it. But the legislature of the state of Texas can be convened to suppress the klan. I make the pre diction that the present governor will not convene the legislature for that purpose, and if he does they will not pass a law prohibiting the activities of the klan." It is apparent from the frequent eruptions of applause that in a world which has a good many troubles there seems to be a surprising number of folks in Texas who find this kind of politics agreeable. This speech, in its complete form, is widely circulated by Mr. Henry's headquarters, and forms the back bone of his campaign. For the pres ent these extracts from ex-Congressman Henry's speech are presented, of course, merely as the record of a political phenomenon. because they want to discourage freak exhibitions. One novelty, having the rythm of a Spanish waltz, is called the "Passe-to." This is a new quadrille passed on by the masters, in which five classic fig ures are replaced by the shimmy, waltz, tango and a mixture of all three. The "Houli" is a descriptive dance supposed to furnish an illu sion of sea waves. Parisian summer season fashion shows at the race track to which the feminine minds, the running of French derby, the grand steeple chase and grand prix are mere in cidentals, may justly be called sym phonies in black and white. Even flowers on hats are, for the most part black and white. Silky flimsy materials have been more common than velvets and all the skirts have been long. "She is occupied doing as much good as she can without attracting attention," is the way the Mexican colony of Paris speaks of a slight woman of rather stately bearing who is always dressed in black and is so well preserved that she might pass for any age between 35 and 50. She is Carmen Romerro Rublo Diaz, widow of Porfioro Diaz, long time president of the Mexican re public. - Badly assimilated knowledge, Mme. Diaz holds, is partly responsi ble for Mexico's woes. She likens the effect of education on the Mexi cans to the effect which the teach ings of Voltaire and Rousseau had on the French. The result, she thinks, finally may tie the same, but the end is far off, and Mexico, like France, will be obliged to go through more reactions and revolu tions before her" destiny Is worked out. all the days of January had some sunshine. - From the first of May to the end of August there were 126 days of some sunshine, 66 of these all sun shine, i My report shows for the year 21 days of rain, 100 days partly rain, 151 days all sunshine, 137 partly sunshine, totaling 288 days of sun shine and 121 of rain, leaving 167 more days when there was . some sunshine than days when it rained. On the three or four days, when brief snow flurries came or ice sleet, all were reckoned as rain. The previous year no record was kept, but I distinctly remember that nearly all the days of January and February were fair, sunny days, and these months are usually supposed to be stormy months. About a year ago one of the Port land papers had some vera printed that was written by one of the groaners. I quote a few lines of it to show how people see what they try to see: . It has quit raining in Portland, I honestly do believe; But how in the world it has happened I really cannot conceive. For many months I have shivered And felt I was watting in vain For the warmth of old Sol to cheer me. And all I saw was the- rain! Portland is said to" have about the same annual rainfall as New York, and we ourselves remember what rain is on the east coast sometimes several days of dull driving storms penetrating, cold, disagreeable and tearing, destructive electric storms most any summer day. Most of our Portland rain Is gentle, misty soaking down to the roots of things In quiet, orderly manner, scarcely disturbing enough to re quire an umbrella. And what a blessing to have enough rain! How should we feel to be In India, Persia or China, where the uncertainty of rain enough to produce crops is a men ace and continual anxiety, threaten ing famine or half famine every few years? Is it not ungrateful, in this best climate of all the world, for beauty, abundance and comfort, to grumble Jbecause of the rain? Such unparalleled fruits and veg etables such matchless roses and gardens and lawns as are furnished because of our rain -liow can any soul, thinking- of God's "mercies new every morning," find fault? Spiritual sunshine, anyway, is so far superior to the physical that every day should seem fair and glad and beautiful. We had a rhyme in our early school days that ran something like this: i Since days are sometimes bright and fair, And sometimes dark and lonely. Let . us forget life's toil and care And note the bright hours only. At least we may remember the sunshine that has been, when we have a few days of cloud or rain, and always may hope for brightness again for it always comes! EVEREST TUSK RESUMED CONQUEST OF FAMOUS PEAK DEPENDS ON ENDURANCE. Expedition Hopes to Overcome v Paralyzing Lassitude With Artificial Oxygen. LONDON, June 24. Sir Francis Tounghusband, president of rfhe Royal Geographic society, is au thority for the statement that the expedition which was to attempt the conquest of Mount Everest had left Darjelling at the end of March and had arrived at the mountain in good health. So far as the con figuration of the mountain was con cerned there remained no serious obstacles to oppose the climbers. "But there still remains," he add ed, "the Incalculable factor that may prove fatal to success the de bilitating effect of high altitudes on the human constitution. We have sent out the hardiest, pluckiest and most experienced mountaineers we can find. But can they, with all their courage and determination, skill and resource, successfully con tend against the paralyzing lassi tude which the rarification of the air beyond 23.009 feet is certain to produce? "Experience -the experience of these next few weeks alone can de termine. The weakness Is occa sioned by the lessening quantity of oxygen in the thinning atmosphere. And to make up for this' want of oxygen we have sent out special apparatus , to supply the precious gas. Even this may not avail, for the apparatus is heavy and, of necessity, the climbers themselves must carry it. And no one can say whether the advantage of breathing the oxygen will outweigh the draw back of having to carry the ap paratus." - - With every condition favorable, Sir Francis concluded, the task might prove beyond human ca pacity. , , CORNS Lift Off with Fingers Doesn't hurt a bit!
