THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, JUNE 25, 1923' 19 M YORK BUYERS BULL BAIL STOCKS Industrials Seem Quiet Wall Street. in OILS RETAIN STRENGTH Mexican Petroleum Gives Little Reflection of General Inter est Among Speculators. BY MONITOR. (Copyright, by the Public Ledger Com pany. Published by arrangement.) NEW YORK, June 24. (Special.) Railroad stocks furnished the feature of a moderately active session which at time, lapsed Into dullness. Industrials were relatively quiet, and even Mexican Petroleum gave little reflection of the intense Interest felt In Its fortunes by the treat, notwithstanding the sensational statement of earnings made by Mr. Do heny In the morning press. Both Mex ican Petroleum and Pan-American opened higher, but they moved irregularly later In the session. Some of the other oils were strong, notably General Asphalt.' A few specialties, such as Malllnson com pany, were active and higher. Mallln on reaching a new high level. On this movement New York Central sold up to 95. the highest level this stock has reached In several years. Baltimore & Ohio and Southern Pacific were among the strong rail fea tures. The feature of the foreign exchange market was the break In German, marks, which undoubtedly was precipitated by the assassination of Dr. Rathenau, to day's price was a new low level. Many expressions of regret were elicited by the announcement of William Rocke feller's death. Although his interest in securities is known to be large, the an nouncement has no market effect. The situation in Mexican Petroleum is still engrossing attention in Wall street, but there were few developments today worthy of special mention. t It was learned through official channels on the Stock Kxcnange that there hae been no thought on the part of exchange authorities that a corner had been at tempted, but that the recent question naire had been sent out to determine the exact position of the member houses in the market at present. Kennei'ott is doing little in a market way these days, as the street has changed opinion a bit on the probable .livldend action by the company. It is now believed that directors may put off action on a resumption of payments until the September meeting. ; Producers and Refiners at 49 was in a new hitch ground 'for the movement, a.nrt held most of its sain until the close. It was reported that current operations of the comnany in Oklahoma. Kansas ana Montana are showing a net of $8 a share on the common before depletion in taxes. ' Chioa.Ro & Great Western, one of the lowest priced granger railroad stocks, is meeting with support on the general theory that the coming crop movement had benefited the - road materially and that the proportion of improvement noted month by month should be maintained. RATT.VFAY STOCKS ACCUMULATED. " , lean Oil Episode. NEW YORHJune 24. Trading in the financial markets this week was influ enced to an extraordinary degree by two developments of widely divergent sig nificance which contributed mainly to the conflicting movements of stocks and bonds. Investment conditions were again sus tained by the cut in the local federal reserve bank rediscount rate, accom panied by assurances that such , action implied additional liquidation of frozen credits at centers where grains and cot ton form the chief commodities of trade. The sensational performances of Mex ican Petroleum, halted only by the inter vention of the stock exchange, provoked much adverse criticism. . Its effect upon other speculative shares of the same variety was not very pronounced, but in other quarters of the list unsettlement frequently resulted. Standard shares were not disturbed by the "Mex Pete" episode, as evi denced by the steady rise of rails. Reasons for the accumulation of those share were found In favorable earnings, hopes of an early solution of labor dif ficulties and federal action designed to effect reduction of operating costs. Speculation was accelerated In the early days of the week by a call money rate of 2, the lowest quotation In al most five years. The later advance to 5 per cent provided an excuse. If not the actual reason, for heavy proflt takintr sales. In the more Important branches of Industry the spring increase of produo tlon was full maintained. From the middle west came reports that steel and Iron mills were running behind in de liveries and the pace In the motor, tex tile and leather trades quickened. Forecasts of the country's trade bal ance for the fiscal year, soon to end, exceeded In volume any1 year of the pre-war period. These estimates are especially important because of the fur ther decline of all foreign exchangea Aside from the admitted tension In Europe's general economic situation and latest disorders In Ireland and Germany, explanations for this week's more severe reaction were lacking. Pails Sustained by Further Rise in Stocks Mexican Govern ment Issues Improve. .. NEW YORK, June 24. So far al it showed any definite trend, today's 4ull and narrow boad market registered more gains than losses, although week-end realizing occurred in the liberty group. Mexican government 4s and 5s made up a8mall part of their recent reac tion, but European loans were affected by stilt another break in foreign ex changes. United Kingdoms ' sold - off moderately and. French municipals were fractionally lower. Rails were 'sustained by the further rise of stocks, junior issues of the west ern and southwestern systems being most favored. - There were a few exceptions, Pennsylvania general 4s and Seaboard adjustment as - falling back slightly. Total sales 1 (par value) ; aggregated 17,949,000. Today's short session of the stock market was given over largely to two classes of securities, oils and rails, vother recent favorites showing neglect. r Mexican Petroleum made an extreme recovery of 6 points from Friday's set back on covering, which resulted from official- statements that the company's earnings were unusually large. ' Pan-American Petroleum continued to display marked strength, as did - also Genera! Asphalt, Producers and Refin ers and several other prominent foreign and domestic olla The more general advance of rails was again led by New York Central, with an extreme gain of more than two points. High-grade Pacifies, grangers and cotton carriers, also made modern ate advances -on purchases of a sub stantial character. ' ' Some motors and their rubber acces sories were appreciably higher, but steels, equipments, coppers and- other leaders of the early days of the week moved within narrow bounds, many showing fractional declines at the close. Sales amounted to 385,000 shares. i Another increase of slightly more than $39,000,000 in actual loans and discounts carried the total of clearinghouse loans to the year's highest level and an actual decrease. in cash holdings of $67,556,260 wiped out the previous week's large cash reserve, leaving a deficit of J3.825.200. More acute depression In the foreign exchange market forced sterling rates 3 cents under yesterday's final quota tion, with German marks at their low record of .028 and declines of -10 to 25 points throughout the continental list. Weakness extended to the eastern European countries, Greek bills selling at 3.35, a reaction of 35 points from the previous day. ' CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. CHICAGO, June 24. Reports of rain In parts of Nebraska and Iowa caused all grains to suffer a setback at the start of the board of trade's short Bession today. At the finish wheat values were un changed to c lower, with July $1.13 to $1.13 and September $1.14 to $1.14; corn was off to c, oats advanced to c and provisions were unchanged to t c down. - 1 A Dig storm was reported in the Cana dian northwest with heavy losses of I property and crops in some sections, but this failed greatly to affect the market. The local .sentiment generally has be- j come rather bearish on account of the good advance of late. There was a wid ening In the July-September difference today to around lc discount for the forcer. Country offerings to arrive were not large and in the Springfield, 111., ter- ' ritory bids of a dollar a bushel at load ing stations so far have failed to bring out much grain. Kain reports led to general selling of corn and oats with corn off 1 from yesterday's finish at the extreme low maae snuriiy alter xne opening, ouppori was lacking for a time and while there was a fair rally, pressure increased on all the upturns and corn generally showed an easy undertone. Rains are not expected to have much effect on oats In many sections, as they came too late and that grain showed relatively more strength than corn. - provisions were weak under scatxerea selling which found demand light. ' The Chicago grain letter received yes terday by the Overbeck & Cooke com pany of Portland follows: Wheat Trade today was mainly in the nature of evening up contracts over the week-end with liquidation by longs especially conspicuous, presumably based on reports of rain in the northern part of the' winter wheat area. There was also considerable hedging in evidence among the purchasers of new-crop wheat and the buying power to offset this pressure was lacking. The local cash market was weak, despite limited offer ings, and prices were 1 to 5 cents lower. 1 Export trade was quiet, and there were intimations ' of some reselling, but these reports lacked confirmation and were, ac cepted as being of little consequence. The weekly weather forecast indicates fair and warm weather the first part of the week, with possibly showers the lat ter part. All eyes are on the spring wheat belt, and reports from that sec tion will have much to do with shaping the course of prices for the immediate future. ' Corn Lowest prices for the day were made at -the opening . of the market on selltng of a general character, influenced by reports of rain in Iowa Later re ports indicated that only scattered light showers occurred, which were not suffi cient to bring permanent relief. The cash market was lower with the futures, but the trading basis -was steady. Coun try offerings to arrive were reported fairly liberal. Other items were passed virtually unnoticed today, but one which will probably be a factor next week was the report issued by the department of agriculture at Washington to the effect that chinch bugs are becoming, a serious menace in the important grain-producing statea It looks very much as though there will he plenty of cause for appre hension over the crop this year, and with the market already in a strong posi tion, prices should advance very easily. Oats This market did not decline with other grains, and the close was at a net small gain for the day. Crop reports showed no improvement; in fact, they were more alarming than ever, if that could e possible. Weather conditions now-are of little consequence to the oats crop, as it 1b Conceded irreparable dam age has already been done. When the government report is issued next month it will undoubtedly show a very large loss from the previous Indication, and the market in the meantime should dis count Its publication. Kye-Continued hedging by the north west more than offset buying by the sea board, and the market had a rather heavy appearance. Cash rye was in active, with No. 2 quoted nominally half cent over July. Leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Ooen.
