Governor Only Nine Behind in
Count So Far.
MISSING TOTAL IS SMALL
General Outside Trend Is to Gov
ernor and Odds Seem to
Favor Nomination.
(Continued From First Page.)
that from now on tlie new totals will
Xavor Olcott.
The figures which make up these
totals are complete for Clackamas,
Columbia, Hood River, Josephine,
Linn, Wasco, Washington, Yamhill,"
Benton, Marion, Morrow, Multno
mah, Polk, Wheeler and official from
Sherman. From four or five other
counties In western Oregon only a
few scattering precincts are to hear
from.
The contender in third place is Z. L.
Patterson with 11,932. White is fourth
with 87S3.' Bean fifth with 3121 and
Lee last with 2108.
Figures similar as regards com
pleteness show that Ralph Williams
has been elected over O. H. Fithian
as republican national committeeman
by more than 10,000 majority. Will
lams has not only carried Multnomah
by a majority of 1832, but has a lead
in nearly every other county in the
state.
W. C. Hawley, In the 1st district,
and N. J. Sinnott in the 2d, have been
renominated for congress, as has
C. N. McArthur in the 3d district.
SInnott's Majority 2500.
Sinnott has a majority over Gwinn
In his district or about 2500, while
Hawley leads Norbiad !n his district
by nearly 9000.
Thomas F. Ryan has dropped defi
nitely out of the contest for state
treasurer with a total lead in Mult
nomah county in favor of O. P. Hoff
of nearly 9000 against Ryan's lead in
the other counties of less than 4000
For closeness the contest between
Thomas K. Campbell and J. R. Thie
hoff for public service commissioner
Is as striking as that between
the leading candidates for governor.
In the present returns Campbell has
a lead over Thiehoff of 75. Returns
on this office, however, are less com
plete than those on governor. The
tendency in the up-state vote gives
Campbell generally the better of the
race and as he has already overcome
a Multnomah majority of more than
6000 votes in favor of Thiehoff, it is
probable that he has been nominated.
Dalzlel Beaten by Gram.
C. H. Gram has, on the face of the
returns, defeated W. A. Dalzlel for
labor commissioner. The strength of
the latter was greatest in Multnomah
county, which he carried by nearly
2500 majority, but Gram ran the
better in the state at large and has
a present majority of 2242.
Justices Burnett, McCourt and Rand
have been renominated, George S.
Shepherd, the only contestant, havini
made a comparatively poor showing.
On the democratic ticket Walter M.
Pierce has been chosen candidate for
governor by a strong lead over Har
vey G. Starkweather, his nearest op
ponent.
Will R. King has been elected na
tional committeeman over Dr. J. W.
Morrow by a small vote.
Fred A. Williams has been recalled
as public eervice commissioner by a
majority of now nearly 25,000. He has
been defeated In the election held
under the recall by T. M. Kerrigan
whose present majority is upwards of
12,000.
Buchtel Also Removed.
Fred G. Buchtel. the other commis
sioner under recall fire has also been
removed from office by a majority on
the main question of more than 21,000.
Owing to a split in the recall forces
over competing candidates, Buchtel
was almost re-elected to office by a
plurality. The present figures, how
ever, are against him by about 1000
votes. Unless there is an unexpected
change in later figures, Newton Mc
Coy has been elected to fill out the
unexpired term of Buchtel.

WASCO'S TOTK IS LIGHT ONE
Olcott, AVilliams and Sinnott Get
Large Majorities.
THE DALLES, Or., .May 20. (Spe
cial.) Although only about 2500 votes
out of a registered 6000 were cast in
Wasco county at yesterday's election,
those who did turn out to the polls
rolled up an avalanche of votes for
republican leaders, majorities of more
than two to one being given Olcott,
Williams and Sinnott.
The only close contest in the elec
tion was in the Wasco county race
for representative In the state legis
lature. Here, according to complete
unofficial county returns, W. C. Bol
ton of Maupin won out over Herbert
Egbert of The Dalles by only 30 votes,
Bolton receiving 553 and Egbert 523.
County Commissioner Hix had a walk
away in hts race for re-election from
Fremont Hayden, opposing candidate.
Hix polled 1298 votes to Hayden's 379.
The democratic vote was unusually
light, only a few hundred votes being
cast. Pierce, the high democratic
candidate for governor, received only
239 votes, as compared with 891 votes
for Olcott, the high republican can
didate. IJing, for democratic com
, mitteeman, received but 208 votes.
The light democratic vote is attribut
ed to the fact that scores of regis
tered democrats switched parties at
the polls yesterday, swearing in with
the aid of two freeholders in order to
be able to vote for Sinnott and Olcott.
The high vote of the county elec
tion was received by J. M. Patterson,
republican candidate for county treas
urer, unopposed, who was the recip
ient of 1583 votes.
Wasco county expressed Itself
emphatically on the question of recall
of Public Service Commissioner Will-
ams. casting 1111 votes for his recall.

the representative ticket. ...

John Giesy and H. H. Vandervoort
were chosen as first and second choice
for mayor of Salem, while Verden
Moffitt and Walter Blrtchet were the

A municipal measure authorizing
the issuance of bonds In the amount
of $13,500 for the purchase of add!
tional fire-fighting equipment and a
bill providing for. the issuance of
bonds to make certain sewer improve
ments carried. A third measure au
thorizing an appropriation of $7600
with which to ; purchase . a street
sweeper was lost.
A charter amendment providing
that the chief of police shall be ap
pointed by the mayor, subject to con
firmation of the council,- probably
failed by a slight majority.
One of the peculiarities of the
Marion county results was the favor
able vote for the recall of both Buch
tel and Williams, and their pluralities
against all candidates to replace them.
Marion county electors first voted to
recall them and then named them
to succeed themselves.
Every candidate who received the
indorsement of the Federation of Pa
triotic societies was defeated in
Marion county.
