10 TTIE SUNDAY OIHvGOXTAX, PORTLAND, JANUARY 13, 1922 NEW YORK WOMAN TRAINS BIRD TO DO SHIMMY DANCE Mrs. A. W. Beckingham Has 100 Feathered Minstrels in Home in Harlem Section of City. 1 I.' I ft J-, f i s " jit I S " ''4 tfsj'Trf.&ecjjfrfcrjrt 71Sjv? 7a "Jtsrte aJfes &jf. WHEX you open the -door of the house of the "Lady of the Wonderful - Birds" your ears are greeted with a burst of melodious song, an exquisite medley of bril liant cadences, mellow flutings and airy chatter that Issue from the tiny throats of a hundred feathered min strels. The writer was one of the favored few who witnessed a performance of the trained canaries of Mrs. A. W. Beckingham, who lives In the Har lem section of New York. This Interesting woman Is not really averse to showing her little charges, but through some precon ceived notion that all human per sonalities are not compatible with those of her feathered- pets, she Is a little hesitant about letting stran gers come in contact with them. Mrs. Beckingham, a culturedand charming woman of about 35, stated that perhaps it was foolish to en tertain this Idea, but she felt, curi ously enough, that some people af fected the sensibilities of her tiny pets. - Visitor Stops Songs. "I was probably Influenced In com ing to this conclusion through a wo man acquaintance of mine. The first time she called on me several months ago, I Invited her to look over my birds, with a view of presenting her with one. "Then a strange thing happened. "When she entered the room, all the birds stopped singing. Their song ceased with a suddenness that as tonished me. There was utter silence, just as though her presence had paralyzed their throats, dried up their founts of song. - "I had never experienced anything like this before. Naturally, my friend was embarrassed at this star tling phenomenon, so I endeavored to put her at her ease by explaining that my birds invariably acted In this manner In the presence of strangers." "Did they commence to sing again when she left?" For a moment "the Lady of the Birds' " soft brown eyes clouded. Birds Remnli Sad. "Not for some time afterward," she answered, "and then I noticed a pe culiar thing. One of my birds, an opera roller named Toddles, refused to sing. Before this incident he had been a beautiful warbler. And would you believe it. It was three weeks before he sang again?" We wondered for a moment what baleful influence the woman visitor had exerted over the little songsters, and which had stilled their Joyous voices. However, it is much the came throughout the animal world. Ber haps you have a pet dog that will growl, and show other signs of dis pleasure at the approach of stranger. It remains an unexplained pnase of animal psychology. Then Mrs. Beckingham led us into a long prettily furnished room in which she kept her trained canaries A long cage in the center of the room contained about 30 birds, all of a high degree, in fact the pedigreed members of her feathered family. Bird nomenclature may mean little to the owners, but when the "Lady of the Birds" commenced to speak l their names we knew that she was possessed of a very lively imagina tion. In this cage were Bon-Bon, Topsy. t ho Cho ban, English Laddie, Judy, Lover and Booze and Bumps. Quite a collection of bird monickers! Canary Chirks Shown. Then in another cage we got our first rllmp.se of new-born canary chicks. And curious things they were! They were barely more than half an inch In length, covered with a dark red skin, and entirely devoid of feathers, except for a few straggly hairs, or pin feathers which en circled their diminutive necks. But after six days their feathers start to grow, commencing to show on the wings first. Perhaps the most surprising feature of their growth is that in ''two weeks they attain the full size of the parent birds. Then Mrs. Beckingham showed the first stunt from her canaries' bag of tricks. Opening the large cage in which were the pedigreed birds, she held out her finger and called '"Rowdy! Bird Brsrins Dancing. 1 Out he stepped, perched for a mo ment on the edge of the door sill. and then flew to- the outstretched finger of his mistress, on which he alighted with much flapping of wings and volume chatter. - Then the "Lady of the Birds" placed Rowdy In the center of the table. She touched the little fellow's bill with her forefinger and com manded him to dance. Next she re moved her hand and commenced to whistle a modern Jazz tune. Rowdy suddenly started to sway slowly from side to side,- and ruffle the feathers on his neck. Then he hopped from one foot to the other,. In the most grotesque manner, still keeping in motion the feathers on the upper part of his body. This was the first bird shimmy the writer has ever witnessed, a thing that should be seen to be appreciated. Silver Syndicate Proposed. MEXICO CITY. Steps have been taken with government sanction to form a syndicate of silver producers In Mexico to prevent the depreciation of this metal or at least the sudden fluctuations which during the past year have made silver mining in the republic a forsaken industry. It Is pointed out that Mexico produces more than 60 per cent of the world's sup ply of silver and that It is only log ical that mine owners in the republic should exercise a stabilizing influence on the market price of the metal.
