lustration. It is a frame house with
shingle or siding Interior. The sur
face Is painted white with blue green
roof and blinds, and the darlf red
brick stucco hints a cozy, comfortable
Interior. One of the Joys of a frame
house Is the possibility of changing
the exterior color scheme occasion
ally. Fancy this same house at some
future time in two tones of gray and
blue, or tan and brown and green.
Upon Inspection we find five large
rooms upstairs and down. In fact, the
whole house Is so admirably divided
that all ropms are better than aver
age In size. Entering the vestibule,
we havo on the one hand the dining
room and on the other the living
room.
The living room, with its wide, gen
erous fireplace, is 13 feet 6 Inches by
21 feet 6 Inches, almost twice as large
as that In the average small apart
ment. French doors open on to a porch
which Is supported by two massive
columns which, by the help of shrub
bery, lends itself admirably for th
afternoon tea or the evening siesta.
From the dining room windows we
glimpse the lawn and garden patch
to which we gain access over the ter
race. The dining room has an exte
rior entrance of Its own.
Walking through 4o the workshop
cf our home, the kitchen, we find va
rious built-in comforts. Built-in fur
niture is again coming into Its own.
Much more economical in cost than
loose pieces which frequently cannot
be had to fit exactly the spaces per
mitted by the construction of the
building, it is also more conveniently
arranged and adapted for use by the
housewife. Here we find a cupboard
for the dishes and kitchen utensils
and another where flour, sugar and
other materials are in plain sight.
Another convenience which will be
readily appreciated Is the small toilet
room which Is outside the kitchen
door.
The Ice box 'is so placed that It can
be iced without muddy feet coming In
to the kitchen, and Is far enough
away from the gas stove so that In
tense heat on baking days will not
affect the Ice. With the price of this
commodity continuing high, this ar
rangement spells economy.
Upstairs we find a large master's
chamber, 13 feet 6' Inches by 19 feet
6 inches, and another good sized
chamber 12 feet by 12 feet 6 Inches.
Each has clothes closets under the
sloping roof, and a unique dressing
closet is placed between them. The
linen closet provided Is readily acces
sible from either bedroom or the
bathroom, which also has a separate
clothes closet under the sloping roof.
The basement has good height,
about 7 feet, which will be appreciat
ed by the owner who has to do his
own furnace tending. Here also we
find metal lath and plaster specified
to protect the under side of the first
floor Joists, especially over the heat
ing plant, where it is most essential
in protecting the house from that
which we fear most fire.
This leads us to more critical ex
amination, and we find through fur
ther inquiry thtat all the parts of the
building where fire Is most apt to
originate are protected by gypsum
plaster; on metal lath. These include
the under side of the stairway, the
natural means of escape from the up
stairs bedrooms in case of a night
fire; the walls next to the fireplace,
around heating ducts, etc., s that
our frame house Is most satisfactorily
protected from Inside fires.
Furthermore, to remove one of the .
great contributing causes of Mrs. I

ceiling cracks metal lath has been
used on the entire first floor ceiling
as the base for the plaster. This form
of crack insurance built Into the
house preserves the original surface
of the ceilings of the dining room and
living room, so that the children may
romp above without fear of cracking
the plaster, for metal lath Is formed
from thin steel sheets cut and
stretched to make a very light web.
which reinforces the plaster like the
steel in a concrete bridge, and re
mains for all time.
Metal lath fire and crack protection
Is secured at a cost of only a small
fraction of the entire cost of the
house, 1 per cent, we are reliably
told, more than If ordinary Inflam
mable lath Is used.
