mates the cost of the Dccniber pro
gramme, now kinder way at approx

schedule many telephone numbers
will be changed with the Issue of the
telephone directory for Eecember
about January 7. Preparatory work
has be;n In progress for thr-e months
to line up automatic offices for the
change, which will involve the place
ment of a large number of new-type
"slx-d'glt automatic" Instruments for
the old, type which has been In use up
until this time, and the chmge of a
number of automatic telephones in
scattered districts of the city to man
ual operation.

The new "slx-dlglt automatic" In
struments are similar to the present
manual telephones. The dial posi
tion on these instruments !a on the
base. These changes are but a few
more steps toward the call Indicator
method of operation. With the In
stallation of these new telephone in
struments, however, the subscriber
will not dial manual numbers and
will contlnuo to operate manual calls
on the five-numeral basis. The "slx
dtglt" operation, which carries with
It complete co-ordination of all tele
phones in the city, will n; a further
step, which will come In the fall of
1922. Changes to take place this
month under the readjustment of au
tomatic offices are listed by C. E.
Hickman, division commercial super
intendent, as follows:
"At the Arleta office the Job of
replacing 1600 telephones In the
Mount Scott district has already been
started. New-typo Instruments will
replace tho old. This work. Is esti
mated to cost $24,000, and will be
complete by J-anuarylO. By the lat
l ter part of next year the 'slx-dlglf

the Portland Mazamas, the depart
ment of geology of the university
during the winter term will give In
Portland a series of lectures dealing i
with the activities of natural forces
in the creation and destruction of
land forms. These lectures, to be5
grlven four evenings each month, will J
be illustrated with lantern slides,
blackboard drawings and mineral
specimens.
Dr. Edwin T. Hodge, consulting
geologist for the city of New York
in 1915 and 1916, ex-head of the de
partment of geology at the Univer
sity of British Columbia, and at pres
ent professor of mineral deposits and
engineering geology at the univer
sity, Is to lecture to the Mazamas.

Fraternity Doughnut Championship
Finals of University Held.
UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eugene,
Dec. 10. (Special.) -The doughnut
debate championship was won by the
Chi PsI fraternity Wednesday evening
when the Chi Psl men took the finals
from the Oregon club team and the
Phi Gamma Delta debaters. Five
pfiints were won by the Chi Psi team,
four by the Oregon club and three by
Phi Gamma Pelta.
The speakers for the Chi Psi affirm
ative wero Edwin Hoyt, Eugene, and
Virgil Oliver, Oswego; for the nega
tive, Thomas Crosthwalt, Marshfleld,
and Harold lllchelson, Eugene.
