The hopes for the cessation of wars, which the disarmament conference has renewed, will make this Thanks giving day noteworthy. Many pas- , tcra will use the general theme or vorld peace as the subject of their sermons. Prayers for permanent peace throughout the world will be offered in practically all of the churches. Organists and choir leaders nave been practicing for some time in prep aration for the special musical pro grammes which they will present at the Thanksgiving services. Many elaborate programmes have been ar ranged. . Services at some of the churches will be at 10:30 o'clock, with the musical programmes preceding the pedal services. Ohurcbes which do not hold Thanksgiving services are invited to meet with the congrega tion which are observing the day. The annual election of officers was held, resulting as follows: President, Rev. Ira Hawley; vice-president. Rev. E. O. Shepherd; secretary-treasurer, Rev. F. W. Pontius. Four new members were received. Eishop William H. Washinger of Port land spoke on "Notable Victories in the Pacific District." Plans were laid for a union Thanksgiving service of the four United Brethren churches of ihe city to be held in Portland First church at 10:30 A. M. Thanksgiving morning. Rev. L. Luckey will deliver the sermon. Committees which have been named to make arrangements for the general convention of the church have been asked by Bishop Walter Taylor Sum rer to be present Tuesday for a din ner at the chamber of commerce at 6. The guest of honor will be the Rt. r.ev. Herman Page, bishop of Spo kane. Dr. Page is the chief officer of the province of the Paclf lo and one of the church's leaders in the west. Among the speakers expected are Dean Vincent, general chairman, and other outstanding churchmen. Spe cial stress will be laid on the help that will be given the 1825 fair by this convention. The thoueands of vis itors will go back to their home towns to tell of the glories of Oregon and bid their fellow citizens come west in 1925. ' The Bible conference conducted by -the Moody Bible institute in the First Baptist church and the Sunnyslde Congregational church has reached the end of the second week. Dr. A. B. Winchester and Dr. L. S. Chafer have been speaking to keenly interested audiences and many expressions of ap preciation have been heard from the people. Beginning Monday at 3 P. M. and 7:45 P. M. Dr. Winchester will be heard In the Sunnyside Congrega tional and Dr. Chafer in the First Baptist church. Handsaker, state director, has cent an appeal to all the churches of the state asking them to Join in the "Justice to Armenia" petitions and at the same time to make Hum eral Thanksgiving offerings for the war sufferers in the near east. Today is Laymen's league Sunday throughout all the Unitarian churches of the country. The day will be ap propriately observed at the Church of Our Father (Unitarian), comer Broadway and Yamhill street. The entire service will be in charge of the local chapter of the league. The Young People's Fraternity will meet at 6:30 P. M., at which time Mr. Eliot will lecture on "Bible Backgrounds." The Sellwood Baptist church Is fast outgrowing its building and appar ently the addition which was talked ot Borne weeks ago will have to be come a reality before long in order to accommodate the crowds which have recently been attending the various meetings of the church. At the morning service last Sunday the bouse was filled and a still larger crowd In the evening made it difficult to find seats for all. Three persons came forward at each service and were accepted' for baptism. Of these six, four were grown and three of these past middle life. Every department of the church has fchown signs of life since the coming of Rev. Chester & Tunnell from Po catello, Idaho, as pastor a few weeks ago. The attendance at Sunday school last Sunday broke all records for a number of years and was one of the largest In the history of the church. A membership contest is in prog ress in the Baptist Young People's vnlon and is about half completed. Al ready the. results have exceeded all expectations and the attendance at the young people's meetings has been more than doubled. Sixty wers pres ent at the meeting last Sunday. A junior chorus choir which was organized last week among the boys and girls with about 25 members, made its initial appearance Sunday evening and was heartily applauded by the audience. Maclean, who has just returned from Wichita. Kan., from the annual meeting of the Woman's Foreign Missionary society, will speak. Mrs, Maclean was one of the northwest representatives on that programme.
