WHEAT TRADE
T
IS ANTICIPATED
Dealers Look for Resumption
of Foreign Buying.
BUSINESS IS NOW SLACK
Price Holding Steady in Local
Market; Larger Australian
Crop in Prospect.
No Changs In the wheat situation was
indicated In the cablet received yesterday,
which said the buyers on the other side
vere showing; no Interest. The feeling, is
Crowing, however, that the time ts not
far distant when the foreigners will again
le In the market for Pacific coast wheat.
This feeling of anticipation ts about all
that can be seen of a favorable nature
In the market at the present time. Whether
export business will be resumed, of course,
will depend on the relation of prices here
and abroad. For some time past prices
have been out of line, being held up at
this end by buying by shorts. It is to be
hoped that when this covering Is over
and the readjustment comes foreign values
will have advanced sufficiently to prevent
any recession In the coast markets.
There were no changes of importance
In bids at the noon session of the Mer
chants' Exchange. Hard white, hard. win
ter and red Walla were the same as Fri
day. November soft white was one cent
higher and December club and November-
December northern spring one cent lower.
Because of Interrupted telephone serv
ice there were no reports of country opera
tions. Liverpool cables said: "Australian ship
pers have ceased to offer any further quan
tities yf new crop. Several cargoes of old
have recently been sold to India at around
47s per quarter and the demand from this
quarter continues active. The Interna
tional Institute of Rome estimates the
wheat crop of Australia at 148.000,000
Lushels versus 187,000.000 bushels last
year. The Indicated' exportable surplus Is
given as 128,000,000 bushels, or about 30,
000,000 bushels more than this season."
Rumania reports that rains are still
needed and If these do not materialize
shortly prospects for the new seedings will
be bad.
Hungary has had beneficial rains over
a larse portion of the wheat-growing sec
tion. Terminal receipts, In cars, were reported
by the Merchants' Exchange as follows:

LOCAL. API'LE TRADE IMFKOVES
Buyers Now Taking; Better Grade of
Fruit Conditions in East.
There was a marked improvement In the
local apple trade in the last half of the
week, with buyers showing more willing
ness to take the better grades. Most of
the early cheap stock has been worked
off. Dealers believe the late-keeping va
rieties will do better after the first of the
year. There was no material change in
prices from a. week ago.
Shipping-point - sales' were limited and
were close to the former range. Yakima

The barreled apple markets In the east
were about steady. The western New
York market was dull, A few sales of
Baldwins were made at $6.60 a barrel
f. o. b. In New York city, on a nearly
steady market, Baldwins closed the same
as the week before at $7.2507.50. Sales
on other eastern markets ranged $6.70 to
$7.25. New England Baldwins ranged gen
erally at 5 to $7 In eastern markets. New
York and Michigan stock held steady in
Chicago at $7 7.50.
Demand and movement were moderate to
slow. Maine Green mountains sacked sold
In eastern cities for $26 2.10 per 100 lbs.
Bulk stock was slightly above that range
in New York but lower In Philadelphia.
New York sacked Round Whites were
weaker, ranging from $2 In New York
City to a top of $2.25 In other eastern
markets. Car lot sales In Chicago ad
vanced to a range of $1.702.
ORDERS FOB ONION'S SLOW DOWN
No Material Change in Any of the Domes
tie -Markets.
The Oregon onion market was slower
during the week, but prices held steady
at the former basis. While few orders
were reported, there was no scarcity of
car such as worried shippers when the
demand was strong.
Onion markets in the east show little
change. The market at Connecticut val
ley shipping points was firm, sales of
Yellow Olobes No. 1 bringing $363.50
per 100 lbs., sacked. This stock advanced
In Boston to a level of $3. 70 8, but de
clined 23c In New York to a $5.2303.50
range. Prices in roost other cities were
below that range, except In Pittsburg,
where sacks ruled $6. Middle western No.
1 yellow varieties followed the same range
In New York City as Massachusetts stock.
In Chicago, however, prices were down
to $404.50 per sack, on a steady market.
Red varieties brought $6 In St. Louis.
Best grade Australian browns from1 Cali
fornia ranged $5 0 3.30 at Chicago, and
yellow varieties held firm at $4.73 03.25.
Browns in eastern markets ranged $5.5006
with little demand.
Onion shipments Increased slightly over
the previous week, 824 cars going forward.
This was Just one-third of the amount
shipped last year at the same time.
PACKERS BOLD MOST OF TURKEYS
Supply Appears Adequate for All Local
Requirements
Receipts of turkeys were larger yester
day, but the supply was not evenly dis
tributed. The packers evidently will havs
the bulk of the Thanksgiving trade and
their prices will dominate the market Oh
the street there was very little buying for
local account, butchers and other retail
ors watting to see what develops today and
tomorrow. A number of out-of-town orders
were filled at prices ranrlna- from 40 to
48 cents. Packers held their No. 1 birds
at 44045 centa
A large shipment came In from Idaho
;at nlghi and good sized lots are due
from the valley today and tomorrow. It
la figured there wilt be a sufficient sup
ply for all purposes, even if none of the
turkeys In the Roseburg pool are shipped
this way. Should the Roaeburg people be
unable to sell elsewhere and send all
their turkeys to Portland, the market will
not long have the healthy appearance it
Las now.
There was plenty of live poultry on the
street and prices were aot as firm aa a
lew days ago, although live turkeys moved
as 82 to 33 centa Buyers declined to pay
over 23 cents for heavy bens. Ducks were
easier at 20f 2Jcenti. A few geese sold
at 20 cents.
LIGHTER DEMAND FOB POTATOES
Good Movement Southward in Filling of
Previous Orders.
The local potato market la quiet with a
sufficient supply on hand and prices about
steady. There Is a lighter demand from
the south for seed, but a fairly active
movement In the filling of previous orders.
Country prices on Burbanks hold around
$1.50 for the best grade.
The week's potato shipments for the
country as a whole were little more than
halt tbe volume shipped during the same
period last year. There was a decrease
of 730 cars from the preceding week.
Maine, Minnesota and New York are still
the leading shipping states with Michigan
fourth. The season's main crop movement
from the principal sections Is about 79,500
ca rs.
With demand moderate haullngs at most
shipping points were light. The general
F. O. B. market was dull. Maine sales
of bulk Green mountains held steady at
$1,516 1.311 per 100 lbs.. F. O. B. New York
sacked round whites weakened to a close
of $1.75 per 100 pounds. Northern sacked
stock ranged fairly steady at $1.6001.65,
F. O. B. Michigan and Minnesota points!
Nebraska seed stock, bulk Bliss Triumphs,
was steady at $1.5001.67 per 100 lbs.,
wsgon loads cash to growers. Probably
1000 cars of potatoes remain In northern
Nebraska. At Idaho points, Rurals held
at IWc to $1 cash to growers, while Russets
brought a premium of 20 0 800 per 100
pounds.
Consuming markets were falriy steady.

State Inspectors of Washington Investigate
All Complaints.
OLYMPIA, Wash., Nov. 19. Complaints
that cull apples are being retailed as good
stock In Seattle and other coast cities have
reached the state department of agricul
ture. Wherever the reports are definite
the department has Investigated, according
to Supervisor Charles L. Hoblnson. and
wnue most of them are without foundation
several violations have been noted recently.
in Seattle we have two men who are
spending practically all their time running
down cull trult shipments and watching
the markets, stores and peddlers," said Mr.
Robinson. "Other Inspectors on the west
side of the state have gone Into legiti
mate by-products.
However, one cannery is now being
prosecuted for retailing wormy spples in
boxes. In Seattle several lots of box culls
have been seized. One lot wan found on
sale in a tailor shop. There have been
a few instances where men have shipped
poor lots of apples, but not necessarily
Infected stock. All definite reports will be
Investigated and if the fruit is below grade
it will be condemned and the owner pros
ecuted without delay.

' Standard Rails Easier.
NEW TORK. Nov. 19. Minor shares
were conspicuous under pool auspices in
today's inconclusive stock market, the

Weekly reviews of financial, commercial

An actual Increase of loans and discounts
by clearing house banks for the week of

small, leaving excess reserves at a liberal
margin over totals recorded in the cor

WEEK'S STOCK DEALING EXTENSIVE
Bear Balds Against War Steels Do Not
Succeed.
NEW YORK. Nov. 19. International
considerations Influenced financial markets
this week to an unwonted degree. All
other events were eclipsed by the deliber
ations of the armament conference.
Professional traders perpetrated bear
raids against most of the erstwhile war
favorites, but these maneuvers were aban
doned when 'it became evident a world
wide peace programme would revive activ
ity in the many essential branches of
Industry.
Conservative opinion In Wall street In
clines to the belief tnat much time will
be spent and many modifications may be
made In the plans of the conference. It
also believes irresistible forces are work
ing fur the betterment of world conditions.
Stock dealings were extensive, although
a large proportion of the trading encom
passed oils, industrials and specialties in
whlcn pools or cliques had a dominant
interest. Coalers were the only group
among rails to manifest more than mod
erate activity and strength, this improve
ment coinciding with the sale of the
Jersey Central's coal lands and resumption
of dividends by Chesapeake ft Ohio and
Hocking Valley.
Apathy of the railroad shares was
almost fully balanced by a ateady Inquiry
for railroad bonds. Proof that the invest
ment situation rests on a firm foundation
was furnished by the success which at
tended many new offerings, notably the
New York Telephone $50,000,000 bond Issue.
Indications that the money market is
developing greater ease, especially for
commercial accommodations, . were noted
during the week.
On the other hand, it was intimated
that even under the moBt favorable con
ditions occasional flurries are likely to
attend the heavy requirements 'of De
cember. British bills were the only form of
exchange to derive substantial benefit from
the trend of affairs at Washington. Sterl
ing advanced to a fraction over $4, Its
maximum quotation for six months. The
German rate reacted almost to Its low
record of recent weeks, but that circum
stance waa offset by assurances that Ger
many's next indemnity payment will be
met on demand.

ALL GUIS SELL LOWER
WHEAT OFFERINGS TOO LARGE
FOR LOXGS TO ABSORB.
Early Weakness Is Due to Denial
of Locust Damage Reports
From Argentina.
CHICAGO. NTor. 19. After averaging
higher through most of the session wheat
broke sharply here today, carrying other
grains with it. The results were net
losses of o to lc In wheat, c to lc
In corn and c in oats. Provisions were
firm and generally higher.
Wheat started at a slight advance over
yesterday's close, but weakened early on
advices that locust damage in Argentina
waa negligible. Supporting offers came
out in May aud started an upward move
ment which waa helped by reports of
good condition in the cash corn market.
Both aides did some general evening up
for over-Sunday and so much sharp
shooting developed that bearish news rum
abroad had no effect.
There waa wheat sold, however, through
out the session and finally the offerings
became too heavy for the local longs to
absorb. The resulting slump knocked
20 off the high figures.
Corn hud a strength all Its own be
cause seaboard Interests paid 6c over
December for Buffalo delivery and In
dustries were good buyers of cash grades.
Fluctuations In near optiona had no effect
on the cash trade. Oata merely followed
other gralna moving In narrow limits.
Packers were out of the provision pits,
but strength In hogs at the yards and
firm futures at Liverpool Included enough
speculative buying to keep prices higher.
Kibs led with a net gain of ten points,
lard ranging from unchanged to 7c
higher.
Early in the week, wheat quickly de
veloped strength when 'sterling was
quoted above $4 for the first time this
year. Gossip that a big banking Interest
was planning a loan to Germany waa also
a stimulus at the same time toward
higher prlcea notwithstanding that de
nials of such plans were promptly forth
coming. Apprehension which developed
later that the harvest Just starting in
the southern hemisphere would turn out
to be a disappointment as compared with
the recent prospect counted decidedly in
favor of the bulla Under such circum
stances the market much more than over
came losses which earlier had taken place
owing to talk that Europeans were let
ting go of United States wheat at less
than replacement cost and that new
Argentine wheat was being cheaply dis
posed of in Europe.
Tbe Chicago grain letter received yester
day by the Overbeck Cooke company of
Portland follows:
"Wheat It was a strong market most
of the session, but during the last hour
trading had more than lout its early gains.
The news waa bullish with one exception,
.hat being in the nature of advices from
Argentina saying reports of locust damage
were greatly exaggerated. Advices from
the northwest, including Canada, were
more favorable than for some time. Cash
markets there were strong and higher with
the demand exceptionally good. Weather
has turned extremely cold in the Canadian
northwest, which is expected to check the
movement of grain. Receipts at American
primary markets for the week totaled
only 5.563,000 bushels against 8,094,000 last
year and It Is the consensus of opinion
that the visible supply statement Monday
will show a good decrease. In fact, It is
to be expected that the visible will con
tinue to decrease from week to week. The
improvement in domestic conditions is be
coming so apparnt that the lack of for
eign buying has ceased as a market factor
and we look for the upward tendency of
prices to be resumed next week.
"Corn Advanced in the early session to
the highest prices recorded in some time,
but weakened at the close under pressure
of week-end realizing by longs. Thro was
no change in the news. The cash demand
from domestic and export Interests was
active at higher prices. Country offerings
to arrive light.
"Oats Inaetive and held within a nar
row range. The buying of the nearby posi
tion WR led by snipping Interest. Spot
