nlO YOU ever follow a path
through the dripping woods on
a winter's day and be surprised -
by the chattering: voices you heard
In the otherwiae silent treetops? The
voices were soft and tinkling', like so
many little fairy bells. You turned
your face to scan the trees. You felt
that their owners must be small, but
though you may have looked until
the back of your neck ached you may
not have seen them. Perhaps a big
drop which had been feathering: on
i nn wl iiia urcuicu uitiii;iien uiuiru
off in your eye. and as you moved
to wipe it away a little band of mid
gets flew to the next tree.
Found! Surely you could follow
them now, you thouRht; but still the
little fellows played well to keep out
Of slfrht. But now and then a glimpse
of a moving bit of olive was visible
And that was all.
,
If this were your first experience
Of the kind you probably went home
unit questioned some bird-lovinR
friend about them. Don bt less he
la vi ir lied as he named them kinglets,
for ktnRlets have at some time or an
other been a puzzle to most bird stu
dents. Their inressent tittering la
hard to loca te and once found the
birds are difficult to diHtinyuish.
They are experts at keeping- out of
ranA of the Klass, and It is only
occasionally that one is able to catch
slprht of the bright crown which dis
tinguishes the bird. The golden
crowned kinglet has a red crown
patch surrounded by. yellow, while
the ruby-crowned ha only the flam
ing red jewel which is usually well
concealed in the safety vault of feath
rs. -
Frequently the kinglets are seen in
little flocks together with the chicka
dees and they are to be looked for in
the same woods where the nut
natchs and creeper are found.
While the latter birds search dili
jrencly for Insects, the kinglets,
chickadees and warblers are working
In the branches searching out the
hiding" Insects and larvae. Nature
has provided well for a check upon
Insect life by having certain species
of birds to work in certain places so.
that their ranges of food hunting do
not greatly overlap, and If undis
turbed would prove a constant chck
upon the insect pests.
The kinglets are with us most
abundantly in the winter, but they
may be occasionally seen in the sum
mer months in some localities where
they nest. The breeding range of the
western golden-crowned kinglet is
from the Kodiak island and ftanai
peninsula, Alaska, south through the
eastern part of Oregon to the San
Jacinto mountains in southern Cali
fornia. In the fall they migrate from
British Columbia to Mexico and Cen
tral America.
There are certain local spots where
the bird student learns to look for
certain birds. It is In the open fir
woods where there Is an undergrowth
of blackberry and vine maple, that
one may usually find the kinglets.
There is one spot in Portland with
which I always associate the kinglets
in my mind. It is the clump of trees
about the lake next to the Reed col
lege campus. On almpst any winter s
day one may hear their faint little
ti-tl-ti-ti about the trees along with
the chickadees, in contrast to the
harsh voices of the ducUs and coot.
John Burroughs termed the king
lets "hop-o-my-thumbs" and a very
appropriate name it is. for they are
always on the alert, moving in ner
vous little Jerks. He describes the
rivalry of the male ruby-crowns In
mating Beason when they flash the
brilliant rubles of their crowns at
each ther.
"They behaved exactly as if they
were comparing their crowns artd
each extolling his own. Their heads
were bent forward, the red crown
patch uncovered and showing as a
large brilliant cap. their tails were
spread, and the side feather below
the wpgs were puffed out. Evidently
it was some sort of strife or dispute
or rivalry that centered about this
brilliant patch."
The kinglets, however, unlike many
crowned heads, are very peaceable,
and though they may get into dis
putes, they seldom come to blows.
Besides the tittering call notes, the
kinglets haw songs very fitting for
the dainty creatures.- Of the two
the ruby-crowned is the best singer.
I well remember my surprise the
first time 1 heard ft. I was wanting
through a clump of open woods one
bright spring morning when sud
denly a flood of song burst out as
if proclaiming the glory of the
splendid morning and pouring out
whole heart full of sentiment. It
seemed to bubble unrestrained. I
supposed it to be a large bird and
looked about for it in the bushes,
but it was nowhere to be seen. Sud
denly 1 caught sight of the little
songster and was at a loss to be
lieve that so small a bird could pour
forth such a volume of song.

When the newspaper came out it
