cial.) Rockaway folks spent a
good deal of time last week
completing preparations for the big
festival, the last day of which now
Is being celebrated. The usual beach
activities also continued. The secur
ing of sea foods always is a recrea
tion feature. Last week good tides
resulted in more than the usual
amount of foraging along the sea.
Every morning groups were seen
going north and south from this re
sort, each displaying crab nets, rakes,
ehovels, gunny sacks and baskets of
lunch.

The many guests at the Hotel Sea
side enjoyed a delightful dance given
by Manager Charles H. Rowley in
the spacious dining room of the hotel
last Saturday night. The affair
proved such a success that there will
be several similar dances given dur
ing the season.
The cottages are occupied by many
people from all over the northwest,
and beach life is at the apex. Hun
dreds of people motor down for a
vacation and enjoy the beauty and
grandeur of old "Pacific," now in its
glory.
The annual bathing girls' parade
took place at 1 o clock yesterday on
the prom. Hundreds of entries were
made during the week to participate
in the parade and it was a huge
success. Miss Leah Leaska was in
charge of the event and cash prizes
were awarded the winners.
Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Frohman are
domiciled in their cottage on Twelfth
avenue.
Mrs. F. S. Belcher and daughter
Beulah will spend a fortnight at the
Scott cottage on the board walk.

Many Fine Horses' Brought to
Beach by Portlanders.
GEARHART, Or.. Aug. 20. (Spe
cial.) The .Gearhart Hunt club was
officially organized last week, when
the annual election of officers was
held and Miss Flora Jane McBride
was elected president. Other officers
named were Anita McGregor, vice
president; Dorothy McBride. treas
urer; Jimmy Grelle, secretary; How
ard Lang and Harold Hirsch, direc
tors. The first event of the season was a
paper chase held yesterday afternoon.
The course was laid out by Flora Mc
Bride and Jane Talbot and covered
several miles. The results will be
made known In the column next
week.. James Nicol, assisted by his
son, J. Douglas Nicol, are In charge
of the olub. During the past week
the senior class enjoyed moonlight
rides along the beach for about 10
miles.
This season a number of the vaca
tionists have brought down their fine

SCHEDULED
Inhabitants of Siletz Preparing for
Exhibits.
NEWPORT, Or., Aug. 20. (Spe
cial.) The inhabitants of Siletz are
making great preparations for the
Indian community fair to be held at
Siletz, August 26 to 28. Besides the
regular exhibition of land products
there will be 600 Indian relics on
display.
Siletz is located about 15 miles
from Newport and all during the
summer the Siletz river has been the
mecca for the vacationists bent on
fishing. Trout are found in abun
dance in this swift, yet winding
stream. Some motorists make the
round trip in one day, while others
go prepared to camp there several
days. The scenery is said to be un
surpassed. Air. and Mrs. F. R. Barnes and
daughter of Corvallis are Nye beach
visitors.
Housed In one of the Rest cottages
are Mrs. Daniels and daughter of
Portland.
Mr. J. D. Sullivan Is a recent ar
rival from Portland.

SEAVIEW. Wash.. Aug. 20. (Spe
cial.) Opening of the new highway
to the north beaches via South Bend
and Naselle was a marked step in
the growth of this resort. For many
years residents of Oregon and Port
land have journeyed here to pass the
summer, while it was almost impos
sible for the Washington people to
reach their own coast resorts. It
is expected that the next summer will
see many Seattle and Washington
residents and Seaview promises to
be prepared for the newcomers.

BAR VIEW. Or.. Aug. 20. (Spe
cial.) Residents along the beaches
last week were greatly interested In
a tin5" vessel which seemed to be
creeping along under two small
reefed sails about half a mile beyond
the breakers. At Bar View the ever
watchful life-saving crew had seen
the craft and the power boat was
run out to see If assistance was
reeded. .
After some time the stranger came
in over the bar under its own sails
but convoyed by the life-savers. It
turned out to be a small fishing
launch which had been operating off
Destruction Island. Its skipper had
intended to enter the Columbia, but
finding a heavy fog there had con
tinued southward. His engine broke
down and for two days and two
nights, alone on the boat, he had
steered along the shore without re
laxation. On board was a laree
catch of salmon which was disposed
of at Bar View.
The cottage camps and auto camp
ing grounds were kept busy during
the week caring for the crowds of
visitors arriving. Auto parties from
the Willamette valley are beginning
to watch the tide tables and appear
at times when sea food is easily ob
tainable. R. N. Magness was a visitor from
Amity enjoying an outing at the
Clam Diggers cottage in Villa camp.
A group of about 30 people, made
up of residents of Carter camp and
their friends, enjoyed a party given
last week by Mrs. E. P. Carter. C. A.
Parker and Captain Farley at Far
ley's Log Cabin. A taffy pull was
rtaged and afterward singing and
story-telling about the great fire
place filled out a delightful evening
