PROBLEMS STILL REMAIN
Improvement Over Present Types
of Transmission One Greatly
Desired by Manufacturers.
The war has brought a number of
Improvements in the mechanism of
the car. That is to say. under the
stern lash of military needs many
weaknesses were discovered and rem
edied which" in the ordinary course
of events, would have taken years
to bring out. Xot all these innovations
have yet actually made their appear
ances, but the coming national shows
will undoubtedly place most of them
on public view.
Whatever else the war may bring, it
is devoutly to be hoped that some
improvement in present types of
transmissions or gearsets may result.
Engineers are unanimously agreed
that the gearset is far the most back
ward of all the mechanical units that
go to make up the modern motorcar
chassis. And one may reasonably hope
that some improvement in transmis
sion design Is imminent so that it
will be of interest to examine the
present types of this mechanical unit
in detail.
The function of the transmission
or gearset is to change the tractive
effort at the rear wheels in propor
tion to the effort needed. By its
means the rear wheels are permitted
to run slowly while the engine is
running fast, etc. In general, this con
trol over the tractive effort Is ob
tained by meshing gears of various
sizes. In operation power Is generated
by the engine, passes back through
the clutch, which delivers it to a
shaft, which is part of the trans
mission unit. On this shaft are a
certain number of gears which may
be shifted into and out of engage
ment with other gears, mounted on I Many

Advantages Claimed for
Long-Wearing, Resilient and
Non-Skid Truck Cushions.
The Howell-Swift Tire company,

tires for trucks, has had some re
markable results from the latter since
they were introduced here about a
vear ago. In that time one big Port
land creamery company has made
these tires standard equipment for its
fleet of 40-odd delivery trucks, this
decision following a thorough test o(
the cushion tires on an experimen
la.ly-equipped truck.
The particular features claimed for
these Overman cushion tires are their
resiliency, non-skid qualities and long
wearing ability. They are guaranteed

.Martin F. Swift, manager of the How

performance is between 35,000 and

LOS AXGELES, Feb. 5. The world
greatest gorge, the Grand canyon, has
been conquered by a motorcycle!
Sounds impossible ' in these days
when no vehicle but a mule is ex
pected to survive the mile descent
down to the Colorado river.
But this is just what John Edwin
Hogg, Los Angeles sportsman and
writer,, has accomplished, thereby
gaining the distinction of being the
first person to drive a two-wheeled
mount, under its own power, a mile
down into the great chasm and out
again.
The start was made from Peach
Springs. Arizona, a small station on
the Santa Fe railroad, which in the
days before El Tovar was known was
the point . from which all tourists
made their pilgrimages to the bottom
of the canyon. At this point the dis
tance from the nearest human habi
tation to the river is 23 miles.
In former days a tourist hotel was
located 21 miles down Pach Springs
canyon, at its junction with Diamond
canyon, a tributary of the Grand can
yon. Tourists were hauled in stages
to this hotel over a rocky trail that
with great difficulty was kept open
to traffic. The two-mile descent from
the hotel to the river was then made
on foot.
After the destruction of the hotel
by lightning this route was aban
doned and the trail became obliter
ated by the violent rains that rage
frequently in that region. The entire
project has now passed away with
out a trace."
Having . made preparation for a
four-day trip. Hogg left Peach
Springs about noon with a cameraman
from the Fox Film company and
Hualapai Indian leading two pack
mules laden with provisions and camp
equipment.
With the machine in low gear, Hogg
battled until dark with the trackless-boulder-strewn
canyon, and the party
pitched camp for the night 12 miles
down the gulch. The grind was re
sumed the next morning and after
several more hours of almost unbe
lievable bouncing, plunging and hurt
ling, his Harley-Davidson sport model
and its Goodyear tires rolled down to
the edge of the murky Colorado.
But piloting a motorcycle from the
rim to the bottom of the yawning
chasm, difficult as it is, is child's
play when compared to the grief a
rider must go through to get out
again.
Hogg, however, was master, ana
after another two days' terrific grind.
in which he fought foot by foot up the
rugged floor of the incline, replete
with lagged boulders and clumps of
thorny cactus, pulled up at the trad
ing post at Peach springs tne nist
man to put a motorcycle to me uoi
tom of the Grand canyon and back
again.
Hogg s feat is the more remarKaDie
when it is considered that despite the
terrific strain on the machine and its
tires, not a single instance of trouble
was experienced, either tire or mechanical.

Heart of the engineer.
If the car owner will stop for just
one moment and consider the essential
construction of the conventional gear
set he will realize the need for great
care In operation and maintenance.
. Two shafts holding sets of gears
which must be brought into engage
ment while the- parts are spinning
at a high rate of speed point to the
ever present danger of breakage and
injury. And this is actually so. Break
age of members in the gearset and
bending of the shafts so that they are
out of alignment are common in gear
set operation. When the shafts once
go out of line there is no hope of de
cent operation until the condition Is
remedied, the gears will clash and
growl, the teeth will chip or suffer
more serious breaks and replacement
of gears will do no earthly good until
the entire transmission is properly
lined up again. When the shafts are
out of line the gears do not engage
evenly, as they are intended to do,
which Is the whole secret of the
trouble.
Proper Lubrication Important.
The first thing to do to keep the
rearset up to proper operation pitch is
to give it proper lubrication. Oil is
the proper lubricant for this unit, not
grease. In winter It will be well to
use a somewhat thinner oil than In
hot weather, as the cold tends to
thicken the oil. anyway. Every two or
three months, or, better, every 1000
miles of run, the oil should be
drained off from the gearset housing,
which should be flushed with kero
sene and then refilled with fresh oil.
Neglect of this precaution will prob
ably bring premature failure of the
Unit.
Finally without a gearset operating
efficiently the entire operation ot the
car is thrown out of gear the car
owner should give the part the most
scrupulous care that he is capable
of supplying. J

ter of a few months for things' to

Cadillac is concerned we expect to

The Implication being that, of
course, there could not be overproduc
tion of Cadillacs, since they are a
vital and permanent necessity.
Mr. McAneeny was less exclusive
but quite as happily serene. "No, the
Industry is not suffering, only -tem-porarlly

BETTER BUSINESS IN CHICAGO I salesmanship into the heads of some
40 members of a class of the Oregon
Institute of Technology. For the
past two seasons the Garbe company
manager has had charge of this class,
which is one of the most important
being given by the Oregon institute.
Included in the class are a goodly
number of men already engaged in
automobile selling. Others are sales
men in other lines, while some are
merely hopeful of becoming salesmen
The course is designed, however, to
give selling instruction along any
line and is not limited to automo
biles, although that happens to be
Mr. Leeston-Smith's own field.
Smith's teaching of salesmanship
is declared to be radically different
from some of the cut and dried
instruction. He believes in getting
down to brass tacks on the proposi
tion and eliminating any unneces-
sary and often undesirable frills. His
one text, which he pounds away upon
throughout the course, is taken from
Longfellow's "Psalm of Life." and is,
Act, Act in the Living Present."
The successful salesman, declares
Smith, must work today and not let
yesterday s or tomorrow's sales carry
him along. The greatest essentia
to salesmanship, he declares, are
work, spirit and enthusiasm. An
actual sales demonstration by one of
the members of the class each meet
ing night is made a feature. One of
the students is called upon to sell
another student, before the rest of
the class, some particular article.
The present class, which has been
in progress through the fall and
something more than a mere auto

various exposition buildings and the
entire grounds, the show will take on
the proportions of a "carnival of

the market in this state shortly.
The donkey engine attachment con

Fordson can be transmitted direct to
the drums. The main drum carries
1000 feet of three-quarter-inch cable
and the haulback 2000 feet of three-eighths-inch

hour, with the haulback makir.g a
maximum of eight miles an hour. Ex
