Sirs. France King Ilcadlce Re
turns to Tacoma After 2 Years
in Torn Countries.
' TACOMA. "Wash., Dec. 18. (Spe
cial.) Mrs. Frances King Headlee,
ex-secretary of the state industrial
welfare commission, who served for
two years as a member of the United
States commission for relief In the
near east, has returned to Tacoma
from the revolt-torn countries of Ar
menia, Turkey and Greece.
The destitution, of the Armenians
tinder the long continued Turkish
domination, the arrogance of the
Turks and their growing confidence
that their national identity will be
acknowledged by the allies, the polit
ical shake-up In Greece that has re
sulted in the repudiation of Vcnizelos
and the proposed return of ex-King
Constantine to his throne, all passed
under Mrs. Hcadlee's personal obser
vation during her sojourn, in those
countries.
.trmrnlii Girls N'nraed.
Mrs. Headlee was in charge of a
erhool In Smyrna, to which Armenian
jrirls. taken away from the Turks,
were brought and harbored until they
could either be returned to their rel
atives or taught a vocation and
placed. Here their torn, bruised, dis
eased bodies were nursed back .to
health and their shocked minds given
peace after their horrible experiences
to prepare them for re-entry into tho
normal world.
"When I first went to Armenia,
i wo years ago, America's help was
the hope of these people." said Mrs.
Headlee. "But today this hope has
dwindled into utter discouragement
and despair as the months have gone
by and nothing has been done.
Many of the Armenians have turned
bolshevik, but it is no fault of theirs,
for they are their last hope. The
allies have done nothing for them of
late. If the allies had put Turkey in
her place two years ago she would
not have resisted nor raised a hand,
but the delay has encouraged her to
believe she is to be kept as one of
the ruling powers, and her arrogance
lias grown accordingly.
Condition Declared Bad.
"I do not believe America or any
ether single country should take a
mandate over Armenia, but a combi
nation of the leading nations should
fee that something was done for
these people.
"Conditions in the near east now
are far worse than they were two
years ago and' no place Is in sight
yet. for they have never stopped
fighting there." Mrs. Headee contin
ued. 'The task of settling the dis
putes of these countries is one of
hard work, but until they are settled
by the stronger nations harmony will
not reign among them. Their na
tional hatreds are so bitter it is un
thinkable. 1-
"The condition of the children is
most terrible. I never went into a
shop to buy food but what a little
bony hand was raised to snatch the
parcel from me as I took it. Hun
dreds of them implored for food, if
you offered to help one. Ten million
dollars could not begin to feed thos
Ftarvintr children."
