"VlBoonsln State society of Oregon
held its monthly meeting in the Tarn
Verein hall last Wednesday evening.
At the business meeting; Oregon prod
ucts were discussed. Unusual mu
sical talent wad displayed by the
young: people who furnished the pro
gramme. During the social hour the
older members renewed old acquaint
ances. Mrs. 'Williams, one of the
founders, was present and told of the
early work of the society and its
growth. Dancing: followed. Those
not caring for dancing found pleasure
In cards, after which refreshments
were served, using: only Oregon prod
ucts. The next meeting will be held
December 15.
- Lewis Brown Becomes Rabbi.
Lewis Brown, the son of Mr. and Mns.
H. A. Brown of this city, who has
teen studying at the Hebrew Union,
college for several years, has been
called to the rabbinate of Templet
Lsrael, Waterbury. Conn. Rabbi Brown
was prepared for the Hebrew Union
college by Rabbi Jonah B. Wise of
this city. He is doing his graduate
work under Dr. Stephen 3. Wise of i
Kew York City.

Neal Given 10-Ybar Sentence.
Ten years in the penitentiary was the
sentence imposed yesterday by Circuit
Judge Stapleton upon Bedford Neal,
found guilty of a statutory offense.
It was brought out in the courtroom
that he had served eight years and
four months in the Illinois state peni
tentiary on a similar charge. He Is
C2 years of age.

J. J. Rlckett telephoned an Insurance
company In Portland to the effect
that his automobile had burned up ,
seven miles east of Pendleton he gave
the constable's office a clue which
resulted in his arrest yesterday. He
is charged with larceny of clothes,

Large .Delegations Are, Expected
From Several Towns and Sev
eral Speakers Are Listed.
An older boys conference for the
Willamette valley . is to convene in
Salem December 10", 11 and 12. Plans
for entertainment of several hundred
delegates have been completed.
W. F. Rouse, secretary of the boys'
division of the Portland Young Men's
Christian association, is to accompany
about 100 boys 'to the conference.
Delegations will go from Marion
county under the leadership of W. P.
Walter, county secretary, and -from
Yamhill under the leadership of H. B.
Dorks, secretary of the county Young
Men's Christian association.
The first session will be held at 4
o'clock December 10. Officers of the
conference will also be elected - the
first day and will have charge of the
following two days' sessions. Satur
day morning will be taken up by short
addresses and conference discussions.
Recreation features will be in charge
of Physical Director Osborne of the
Salem association. Citizens of Salem
will tender a banquet Saturday even
ing to boys of the conference.
An older boys mass meeting will
be held at 3:30 Sunday, at which Rev.
B. W. Warrington of Roseburg will
speak on the theme of the conference.

CLEAN-UP DRIVE BEGUN
School Board Asked to Enforce
Sanitary Measures.
EUGENE, Or., Nov. 20. (Special.)
A campaign for cleanliness and health-
fulness in the schoolrooms of the rural
districts of Lane county has been in
augurated by E. J. Moore, county
superintendent of schools, and J. G
Swan, county rural school supervisor.
Mr., Swan, in his travels over the
county this fall, said he had found
conditions in a large number of dis
tricts that should be remedied.
Mr. Moore and Mr. Swan have sent
letters to the clerks of rural districts
asking them to try to Induce the
school boards to clean up the interiors
of the schoolhouses and the grounds.
