ASHLAND, Or., Nov. 12. A social
affair that attracted a large group
of women Friday afternoon was the
reception given at the practice house
in honor of Miss Bertha Davis, state
supervisor of vocational education of
Oregon.
Miss Evangeline Foley, head of the
home economics department of the
Smith-Hughes vocational high school,
was assisted by Mrs. G. Gailey of the
board of education; Mrs. Dodge, presi
dent of the Parent-Teachers' club, and
Mrs. George Briscoe. A bevy of high
school girls who are members of the
practice house group served tea and
wafers in the dining room. More
than 100 women called during the
afternoon. Miss Davis gave two in
teresting talks on "The Training of
Home Makers."
The Ashland school is one of the .
four vocational schools in the state
operated under Smith-Hughes super
vision. Oregon vocational home eco
nomics departments are unique in j
that they require a practice house
in addition to the regular school
equipment.
Wednesday evening the welfare
league of Simon's department store,
composed of all employes of the firm,
entertained their friends at an in
formal dancing party at the East
Side Business Men's club.
Dancing and cards were indulged In
until the wee small hours, after which
delicious refreshments were served.
About 125 persons enjoyed the even
ing's entertainment, which is one of a
series of such parties. that are being
planned.
J. B. Hudson gave a beautifully ap
pointed dinner Tuesday evening at
the Hotel Portland. Covers were
placed for 14 at a table decorated
with chrysanthemums and ferns. '
The B'nal B'rith Dramatic club at
its meeting at the B'nal B'rith build
ing. Wednesday night, decided to
abandon the fantasy previously chosen,
"The Enemies of Israel," as it was
unanimously agreed that the char
acters of the play required a group
of younger boys and girls than mem
bers of the club.
A meeting will be held at the B'nal
B'rith building Tuesday evening at
o'clock to choose another play. It
was also agreed that the first few
plays are to be presented before the
club members only. In order to attain
the necessary practice and confi
dence to give a public performance.
All those Interested in dramatics
are requested to attend the next
meeting, as a number of changes will
be made in the organization and plans
of tbe club.
The Reed college Menorah are being
congratulated on the lovely dancing
party held at the B nal B'rith build
ing Saturday evening for the benefit
of suffering Jewish students of east
ern Europe. Every available space
was banked with bright green foliage
and with the red streamers and Japa
nese lanterns above and immense red
ribbon bows attached to golden
baskets of Thanksgiving goodies on
each wall, the ballroom presented a
beautifully festive appearance.
The soft light given by th red
covered chandeliers added to the
beauty of the pretty gowns worn
by the girls and the ballroom pre
sented a charming picture. The patro-

Loretta Hitchcock and Mrs. Helen
Otto; consolation prize went to Mrs.
E. Fording.

days of anxiety, he finally recovered

Last Saturday evening Peninsula
Park clubhou&e was the scene of an
interesting gathering, when the Yam
hill Social club met for a dinner and
a Jolly good time. There were about
125 former residents of Yamhill
county present.

occasion by his witticisms and kindly
remarks. J. W. Baker gave a few
interesting historical facts in regard
to first buildings in Yamhill county.

dance for all its employes Saturday
night at the Multnomah hotel. The
affair will be a costume party and

The Girl Reserves of the city are
looking forward to their big get-to
gether party on Friday, November 26,
at 8 o'clock in the Washington high
school auditorium. All friends of the
girls and the public are invited to en
joy the programme of clever stunts
put on by the corps. Walter Jenkins
will conduct a short community song
as an opening to the evening's pro
gramme. The Daughters of Isabella will en
tertain Tuesday with a dance in
Knights of Columbus ballroom.

The Portland chapter of the Sigma
Chi fraternity has. announced a dance
to be given Friday evening in the as
sembly room of the Hotel Portiana.
The Kappa Psi fraternity will give
a banquet Saturday evening in the
grill of the Hotel Portland. It Is ex
pected that there will be about 75
present.
The Christian Endeavor society of
Piedmont Community Presbyterian
church will present an interesting
programme at the regular Sunday
evening meeting November 28. The
speaker for the hour will be Mrs. R.
H. Mort. who will tell stories of the
work which will be splendidly illusa
trated by the use of a stereoptlcon.
There will also be special musical
numbers. All young people are es
pecially invited. The meeting opens
at 6:30 o'clock.
Laurelhurst club Woman's Progres
ive unit will give one of their card
parties open to members and non
members at the clubhouse on Tuesday
afternoon, November 23. These af
fairs have always taxed the capacity 4
of the clubhouse but with the newly
remodeled and enlarged cardroom the
affa-ir is expected to draw a large
crowd. .The entire unit will act as
hostesses.
The Laurelhurst club will give their
annual Thanksgiving ball on Wed
nesday evening, November 34. at the
clubhouse. These affairs have here
tofore been held on the west side at
the Multnomah hotel, but with the en
larged dancing space the directors of
the club have decided to stage all
