After a strenuous trip of personal
inspection of the surveyed route from
Neskowln, . in southern Tillamook
county over the divide into the Sal
mon river country to Otis, thence to
Newport, walking nearly the entire
distance. Governor Olcott, accom
panied by Herbert Nunn, state high
way ng:ineer,' and Dr. R. E. Lee
Steiner. arrived Tuesday in Newport
in time for himself and party to vote.
Wednesday the governor and his
party inspected the jetty and left for
Yaquina by the hydroplane "Curtiss
Seagull." piloted by F. E. Harding,
where they caught the train for- home.
In relating- his experience during the
trip the governor said:
"We left Salem Wednesday of last
week for the coast for the purpose of
inspecting the surveyed route of the
proposed road running from Neskowln
in southern Tillamook county over
the divide into the Salmon river coun
try to Otis. -
Road to Start at Sea.-
"This road will start at the mouth
of Neskowln or Slab creek; at the
ocean and run easterly over the di
vide, a distance of approximately 10
miles, to Otis where it will connect
with the present road from Willamina
to Taft on Siletz bay.
'This road is to be built co-operatively
by the federal government, the
state and the two counties interested,
Tillamook and Lincoln. - The funds
representing the state's share .have
been appropriated by the highway
commission. Mr. Nunn believes the
work will start next year.
"The object of our trip was per
sonally to see the proposed route and
country it will si rve. The present
road from Willamina is almost im
passable even for a four-horse team
with light load. There is fear evi
denced by the .local citizens that it
will shortly be so bad that the mail
service will have to be discontinued
and which would naturally work, the
greatest possible hardship on the set
tlement and would prove nothing
short of a calamity tu them.
Road to Help Ulntrlrt.
"This road, when completed, is ex
pected to relieve this situation and
prove a great boon for the long suf
fering people of the -southern- emi of
Tillamook and northern end of Lin
coln in that it would give them ac
cess to the outside world and at the
same time form an important link in
the Roosevelt highway. The road
' south from Otis past Devils lake to
Taft is also in fearful shape and
should receive early attention.
"From Taft we went up the Siletz
river, spending two days on it. It is
a wonderful river. Tuesday we
mushed' from Siletz bay to Newport
ending our week's trip in a good old
fashioned Oregon rain. We walked
practically the... entire trip from, the
ocean.
"The Salmon river and, Siletz coun
tries present wonderful opportunities
as soon as highway transportation is
afforded. We were greatly impressed
with all we saw there. It is prob
.ably the greatest and richest area
lying undeveloped in'our state today.
Very few of the people of the state
at large know anything at the present
time of these countries or their vast
possibilities. This arrives from the
fact that they have always been al
most inaccessible. With .good high
ways, which I earnestly hope will
rtaci. realization in the early future,
the great fertility and richness of the
country in question assures very
rapid development and bring to the
sturdy pioneers of this territory their
just and long delayed due."
LINCOLN ELECTION FREAK

TOLEDO,' Oft, Nov. 6. (Special.)
. All election dope was upset in Lincoln
county. The county, by registration
4 to 1 republican, gave Harding a
2-to-l vote and defeated Chamberlain
: by a small majority, then defeated
- every republican candidate, with one
exception, who had . democratic op
position. John Fogarty, democrat, of New
: port has been elected judge over
Henry Howell, republican, of Toledo.
EU Stocker, democrat, Newport, won
over Al Swartz, republican, Toledo,
for the office of assessor. W. M.
Simpson, democrat. Toledo, eliminated
R. R. Gwynn, republican, in the race
for sheriff. George Schenck. demo
crat, by a margin of one vote, de
feated Arthur Nye, republican, as city
marshal.
The only other case of democratic
opposition is for the position of
county surveyor, and as to whether
Z. M. Derrick, demcorat,- or Ord
Castle, republican, will win depends
upon the returns from the official
count.
Toledo Mill Suspends. v
TOLEDO. Or., Nov. 6. (Special.)
The Roberts sawmill of this city shut
down yesterday for an indefinite pe
riod. Lack of orders was given as
the reason. The sudden closing of
the mill was a surprise to local peo
ple, as the mill had established a re
markable record of persistent run
ning. It is rumored that the Chesley
mill will also be closed soon.

cial.) With the last faint echo of the
late election hardly lost In oblivion,
the political pot of Washington al
ready finds Itself being stirred by a
series of booms for various candi
dates who are allowing themselves to
be listed in a race for speaker of the
house of the next legislature.
While none of the legislators named
in the boom have -come out openly
with any sort of a campaign, it is
definitely known they will make the
race if prospects look good enough
after two or three weeks of scout
ing among the legislators-elect.
Howard Lucas, prominent lawyer
and banker of Yakima county, is be
lieved to be one of the best prospects
for the speakership and many leaders
of the last legislature are for him.
K. H. Guie and Robert Grass, both of
King county, are mentioned as candi
dates. It is the gossip that Grass has
already sent letters to members of the
next legislature warning them that
Representative J. H. Davis, of Pierce,
Representative Mark Reed, of Mason,
and Republican National Committee
man Guy E. Kelly have begun an
"offensive" in an effort to organize
the next legislature.
Just before the close of the last
legislature in Olympia last year, 65
members of the house signed a "round
robin" that they would not take any
part in a preliminary programme for
the selection of a speaker, but would
devote the first week of the session
at Olympia to an open election on
this matter.

cial.) At a call meeting held Tuesday
at the Methodist Episcopal church.
