Warning Before Gathering
in California.
EUREKA. Cal., July 31. (Special.)
Sixty per cent of the uncut timber
In the United Sstates "is contained in
the rapidly diminishing- forests in the
states of Washington, Oregon, Idah,o,
Nevada and California, and within
20 years that timber will be reduced
to lumber, Representative Joseph W.
Fordney, chairman o the congress
ional ways and means committee, an
nounced on his recent visit to Eureka
in the interest of his timber holdings
In the states of California, Oregon
and Washington.
"But 20 per cent of the once con
sidered inexhaustible long leaf yel
low pine forests of Texas, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia now
remain," Representative Fordney said,
"and that small proportion of the for
mer pine forests will be exhausted
within a very few years now."
Start Was Lowly.
The chairman of the national lower
house ways and means committee
began bis career as a "timber cruiser"
In his youth, back in his native state
Michigan for the Boston -& Maine
railroad, long before that road had
taken its present name, and his years
of experience in timber, together with
the fact that he is one of the largest
timber owners in California, Oregon
and Washington, stamps him as an
authority on timber in North America.
Representative Fordney further
stated that Canadian timber owners
were just awakening to the fact that
the shortage of timber threatening
the United States, but reflects their
own predicament.
Canadian mill operators were for a
long time under the impression that,
to quote them, "back behind us there
is a supply of uncut timber for years
to come," but recent careful surveys
of the "back behind us" lands devel
oped the fact that fully 40 per cent of
the available timber had already been
cut, manufactured and used.
Mill Men Awakening.
I'he same thought had been enter
, tained by mill operators in the Pa
cific coast section of the United
States until recently, he said, but
American mill men everywhere have
at last awakened to see the end of
the timber manufacturing industry in
North America.
Representative Fordney's public an
nouncement of "the end of the saw
milling industry in the United States"
was made at a banquet in Eureka re
cently in connection with his advice
to lnmheriner and banking" interests
here tQ h aster their efforts to have
the government through congress
ional appropriations to "set aside a
tract of the remaining Sequoias as a
lasting memento of the Pacific coast
states' former great forests of giant
trees."
PRINCE PROVEN FRAUD
Man Masquerading as Former
Kaiser's Son Is Identified.
PARIS. July 31. The report that
Prince Joachim of Hohenzollern, the
youngest son of the ex-kaiser, was
attending a university in Paris caused
a census of the universities to be tak
en in this city last week.
A young- man masquerading as
Prince Joachim was discovered in the
College of France. He was in con
stant correspondence with several
Prusian leaders and at various times
bad received sums of money from
them. He is a Bavarian and through
out the war had been interned on an
island near Brest.
The real Prince Joachim committed
suicide July 17 by shooting himself
during a fit of depression at his home
in the outskirts of San Souci park in
Potsdam.
OLD F0RTT0 BE USED
Missoula Army Post Unoccupied for
Seven Years; 32d to Move.
MISSOULA. Mont., July 31. Recent
announcement from Washington that
a battalion of the 32d infantry, now
stationed at Camp Kearney, Cal., will
be transferred to the local army post
of Fcrt Missoula was welcome news
to local citizens. For the past seven
years the fort, located four miles
southwest of this city, has been un
occupied except for a brief period
during the world war when a branch
of the studeuts' army training corps
was receiving instruction there.
It is one of the oldest posts of the
northwest, having been founded dur
ing the Indian wars. In recent years
considerable improvements have been
made there. During its abandonment
it has been in charge of a caretaker.
SIMS' CONJECTURE HEARD
Rumor Says Admiral Will Be As
signed to Pearl Harbor.

At the headquarters of the Pearl har
bor naval station, naval officials,
while admitting that the report was
current, expressed the belief that it

journal that the navy department
! had the transfer of Admiral Sims in
! mind. The commandant's post is va
cant here, Rear Admiral William B.
Fletcher having recently been as
signed to Rio de Janerio, Brazil.
Coffins Used for Firewood.
VIENNA, July 31. On the river
bank in the outskirts of Vienna is the
"Cemetery of the Nameless;" where
bodies taken from the Danube are
buried. Vandals have completely
stripped It. Grave markings were re
moved and the coffins exhumed and
broken up lcr firewood.
