HE following hand illustrates the
Importance at times at a no
trump declaration of breaking
away from conventional rule and at
opee playing the command of the'
adversary's suit.
The hand was recently played in a
local club and is susceptible of a
swing of one trick, according to
whether declarer withholds the com
mand or at once, playa it. While cor
rect play shows a difference of one
trick only, it Is usually the small
gains, the trick saved or won, that
constitutes the fine point of distinc
tion between the expert player and
the simply average one. The trick
saved or gained is often the trick
that eaves a slam or .game on the
part of the adversary, or that makes
slam or game on the part of declarer,
and the intrinsic value of which is
therefore greater than that , of the
ordinary trick. In this case it had a
value of 60 rather than simply 10, as
it was the trick that enabled the
player to make a little slam. This
is the hand:

lished. Let it be noted that at tricks
2 and 3 Z played dummy's two high
est diamonds, the 9 and 10. This was
done on' the theory that the two
rounds would drop, the adversaries'
diamonds and that dummy therefore
must unblock or he rather than de
clarer would be in command on the
third round, in which event, as de
clarer bad already played out his re
entries, his remaining diamonds would
fail to make. As it was Z remained
in the lead, and at
Trieks 4, 5. and 7 made his re
maining diamonds. ' Then, as the one
and only chance of making the clubs
depended, upon a successful fineese.
Z at
Trick 8 came out with the queen

that Z might win with Jaok and
give him back the lead, which was
done. At

his three remaining clubs.
-X thua made a total score of

Had Z failed to out ud the ace at

had been shifted to spades. A-B
would have mado seven tricks before
the chance again offered for Z get

tne score he did he would have lost
his contract by two trieks and In

It is sometimes difficult to deter
mine whether the better results se
cured at times in duplicate play by
some players over others of sup
posedly equal caliber are due to luck.
as some seem inclined to think, or
are the outcome of superior Judg
ment as applying to the particular
situation. An eastern authority, dis
cussing the subject, writes as follows:
'The. examination of a large num
ber of hands upon which some play
ers have gone game while others
nave not, rails to reveal any particu
lar part or tne tactics of the game
that ia to be credited with the result.
Sometimes it is due to making the
trumpa separately, sometimes it is
judicious finessing or refusing to
finesse, sometimes placing the lead,
sometimes forcing discards, some
times ducking, sometimes unblocking.
No. one thing seems to bring about
the result more than another. The

"it is remarkable how a little dif

"Here is a hand in which the dif

matter of luck; but if the situation is
carefully examined it will be found
that the winning players had the
sounder logic back of their play and
were prepared for contingencies which
the others had not foreseen or hoped
wouia not arise.
Ht is worth noting that the hrand
was played in New York and that
the bidding- was confined to the
dealer and his partner, that it
majr be fairly assumed they arrived
at the best declaration for the com
