Many Aerial Craft Used in Re
porting Yacht Races.
USES GREATLY EXTENDED
More Than One Thousand Aviators
Xow Eng-aged in Transport of
Mail, Passengers, Freight.
NEW YORK. July 24. Reporting:
of the international yacht races by
aircraft introduces a new element In
the feathering of news and its swift
delivery and also marked an import
ant development in the business uses
to which the airplane is bein.-j put.
In the past year at least a score
of newspapers throughout the United
States have occasionally undertaken
reporting, photography or circulation
of editions via air. but the yacht races
afforded the first example of air
craft being chartered in considerable,
numbers just as taxicabs or tugs
have been in the past.
The situation thus created increased
interest in the yacht races for tho
j reason that rivalry among the news
ana pnotographio agencies precipi
tated a second race (this one in tho
air) to decide which would be tho
first in with pictures or story.
There are now in operatio . through
out the United States something more
than a thousand commercial aircraft.
The principal use to which they are
being put is the transport of passen
gers and package freight. "Hops"
are being made at fairs, expositions
ann carnivals. There is commuting
and inter-city travel. Steamers and
trains, missed at the terminals, have
been overtaken in the air. Surface
ferries, put out of commission by ac
cident or strike, have been aided by
aerial transport.
I'lr Kllcbti Only 12 Seconds.
When Orville Wright. December 17.
1903, made the first flight in a power
driven airplane he remained up 12
seconds, and for several years after
ward the condition of the weather
was a controlling factor in aeronau
ics. While this is being overcome,
the airplane is naturally being put
to most extended uses during the most
favorable seast ns. Thus, in the win
ter mo..ths, several transport com
panies operate In the south. In the
summer they fly out of New York,
Boston and Atlantic City.
On the Pacific coast, which has a
more moderate climate the year,
around, there is hardly a cessation in
flying, and a passenger air liner is
now in operation between San Fran
cisco and Los Angeles. In the middle
west flying is carried on over both
land and "water, the great lakes and
the Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri
rivers affording routes for hydroair
planes. .
In the southwest, where transpor
tation facilities by rail are inade
quate, there is much passenger and
package freight carrying by air. In
the middle west, too, lighter-than-air
vehicles are in operation, the first
passenger dirigible in the United
States making trips out of Kansas
City to points in Kansas, Oklahoma.
Texas and Colorado.
The hundreds of aircraft in civilian
hands have in some instances entered
competition with rail and water lines,
and in other cases they have been the
means of opening up territory hith
erto accessible only to pack trains
and into which rail or even motor
roads could not be built except at ex
cessive cost. " 9
Aircraft Touring Popular.
Aircraft are also coming into
greater favor for pleasure and Bport.
and touring from city to city is going
on in so far as limited landing field
facilities permit. The transconti
nental and New York-Toronto air
plane races of last fall gave an im
petus this year to interest in the air.
Wealthy sportsmen are flying to fish
ing and hunting grounds, and hunt
ing and fishing have actually been
carried on in the air.
General utility in business-has been
demonstrated by salesmen's flights
up the Hudson,' through the south
west, in the northwest and along the
Pacific coast. Quick deliveries have
been made in many instances, especi
ally in the middle west, where ex
press or ordinary mail transport has
been handicapped.
Executives are finding aircraft of
much assistance in extending the
range of their personal supervision;
first, competing with the railroad and
steamer where time is the chief ele
ment, and, second, traversing regions
not reached by rail or water, such
as the great farms and ranches of the
west, the oil properties in the south
west and mining activities in Mexico,
South America and Alaska.
Of the civil uses by national and
state governments to which aircraft
are being put. the aerial mail is the
most important. In this we lead the
world. The postoffice department,
under Otto Praeger, second assistant
postmaster-general, has almost com
pleted arrangements to connect New
York, San Francisco and Los Ange
les by air. He has called for bids
for aerial mail lines from .Cleveland
to Detroit,- from Pittsburg ' to St.
Louis by way of Columbus, Cincin
nati and Indianapolis, from New York
to Chicago by way of Harrisburg.
Pittsburg and Fort Wayne, Ind., and
from New York to Atlanta by way of
Washington. Raleigh, N. C.
Three Service In Operation.
The Washington-New York, New
York-Chicago, and Chicago-Omaha
services are already in operation. Mr.
Praeger's report for the month of
May shows the efficiency of the aerial
mail. On the New York-Washington
route, 72 per cent of the planes started
on time, 85 per cent completed on
time, 93 per cent had no forced land
ings, and there was no damage to
any ship the whole making an ave
rage of 88 per cent for the field. Be
tween New York and Cleveland, 51
per cent started on time, 86 per cent
completed on time. 93 per cent fin
ished without forced landings, and 98
per cent without damage, making the
field average 82 per cent.
Between Cleveland and Chicago, 77
per cent started on time and 65 per
cent completed on time; 71 per cent,
were without forced landings and 9fl
per cent without damage to' planes,
making the field average 76 per cent.
Between Chicago and Omaha, 78 per
cent started, and 82 per cent com
pleted on time; 91 per cent were "with
out forced landings and there was
no damage to equipment, thus making
the average 88 per cent for the field.
