Carter was down early In the week to open his summer home for Mrs. Carter, who arrived on Tuesday, bringing- with her Mrs. W. M. Cake, Jr., and the latter's son, Vincent. Mr. Carter has returned to Portland. While R. W. Cameron recuperates after a recent operation he and his family are taking in the beach. They have secured the Dan Moore house on Fourth avenue for the summer and have brought with tbem their daugh ter and Mrs. Cameron's mother. Mrs. Arthur Beeson has returned to her home in Condon after visiting her father, J. A. Mclntire, at the Beacon hotel. That this Is an unusually good clamming and crabbing year at the beach is the statement of numerous old timers. People are bringing In enormous clams they have dug. prin cipally between the Necanicum inn and the mouth of the Necanicum river. Mrs. W. J. Ramsey has opened her house on Twelfth avenue and will re main through the summer. With her is Gladys Ramsey. After spending Sunday at the Sea side hotel J. T. Parker secured a cot tage near the beach and has moved his family there. The Parkers are from Butte, Mont. AugusJ. Benz, Jr., has moved his family into one of the Merrill cottages for the summer. In anticipation of the coming golf season at Gearhart several local tournaments have already been pulled off on the links here. The greens are in unusually good condition for so early In the the season. Water is on seven of them and will soon be on the whole 18. A big crowd of those who are fond of this sport are ex pected for the week end. Houses are being opened rapidly and a large number of private cars are already In evidence on the boule vards. The early visitors included Mrs. R. B. Caswell, who was accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Murphy They spent week at the Caswell house on Ocean avenue and then departed for Portland, as Mrs. Caswell is to pend the summer with her two daughters in Montana. Felix Friedlander has established his family in their dwelling on the ridge. S. Wolf was down early In the week to open up his cottage and was joined Wednesday by Mrs. Wolf and her family. Mrs. Arnold Blitz and her young sters are in a summer home this year. The H. J. Fisher cottage this sum mer is being occupied by Mrs. John Cronin and her mother. Pfunder, are in their bungalow on Ocean avenue. While the four Prudhomme chil dren make merry on 'the beach at Gearhart Mrs W. E. Prudhomme 1s presiding over her summer home here. The family have been down several weeks and will probably remain the greater part of the summer. Mr Prudhomme has joined them over Sundays. Auto stages are daily bringing In those who make Cannon Beach their headquarters for the summer, and a fair percentage of the houses have been opened. While few of the regular activities have been in progress thus far, ambitious boys in narticular have been indulging in salmon trout fishing In Elk creek and report several good catches. The Warren hotel has been the sojourning place for several weeks of Dr. E. H. Lindley, president of the University of Idaho. Mrs. Lindley Is enjoying the beach with him. A honeymoon trip wound up Tues day at the Warren when Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Ludwlg alighted there. The couple were married last week in Portland. Mr. Ludwlg is connected with the Bank of California. His bride was formerly Miss Sophia Tipton. Others registered at the Warren for several days were N. G. Pike and family of Portland, also his daughter, Mrs. Chessman: Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Shelburne hotel was the stopping place for a party of motorists from California early In the week. In cluded in the party were Dr. Charles F. Wise and family, R. Wise. Herbert D. Wise and family, and M. Wise and family, all of Oakland. Mr. and Mrs. Max Smith and daugh ter are domiciled in their summer home here. Dr. and Mrs. S. A. Mulky have taken the Wolford cottage for the summer. Miss Julia Hoare and Curtis Hoare are home from the University of Washington and have joined their parents at the Shelburne hotel. Miss Hoare graduated in June. Mr. and Mrs. M. McN'amara are oc cupying their place at Seaview. Mrs. Mary Devaney has opened up her Seaview home. Mr. and Mrs. H. W. MacPhail of Raymond, Wash., are in one of the pretty houses on the ridge. Their son is with them. The family have brought their car and their big Alas kan wolf hound, which is attracting much attention on the beach. Dr. J. Rose, with his wife and two daughters, is domiciled in one of the Baker cottages for a portion of the summer. Mrs. George Lowenson, Sr., better known as "Grandma" Lowenson. w.10 pays a visit to Seaview every year, is once more established in her bach retreat. Grisham of Gaston spetit a recent vacation in Cottage Oh How Different. PEOPLE REACH NEWPORT Auto Travel Falls Off and More and More Arrive by Rail. NEWPORT. Or., July 3. (Special. l The summer seaside season at this resort developed much earlier than anticipated this year and the number of people now assembled here en joying the cool ocean air is largely in excess of that of this time last season. There has been a very no ticeable falling off in auto travel and a correspondingly noticeable in crease in travel by rail. Cottages are rapidly filling up, and hotels and boarding-houses report remarkably good patronage. The three days' celebration of In dependence day, which is being car ried out under the auspices of the 3d coast artillery company, national guard of Oregon, will be the most elaborate affair yet attempted here. One thousand five hundred dollars have been contributed toward it by the citizens. This is a large sum for a community of Newport's size. It speaks well, however, for the spirit of patriotism which pervadies the peo ple of this locality. Newport is still four miles from the terminus of the Southern Pacific rail road, and there is the usual growl over the delay of transferring to the boat at Yaquina. Mrs. E. F. Pernot and daughters Ann and Mable arrived from Port land during the week and are occupy ing their Nyebeach cottage for the summer. The Pernots have been reg ular Newport summer vacationists for a good many years past. Mrs. S. W. Motoring over the Sheridan road in three machines, a jolly party of Shriners and their families arrive-1 at Camp Comfy, Rockaway.
