OFFICIAL LIST OF OREGON'S DEAD COMPILED BY WAR DEPARTMENT
Records Show 811 Men and Women on Honor Roll Portland's Loss Heaviest in State, With 99 Killed in Action and 140 From Other Causes.

army and marine- corps, compiled
and listed in complete form, was an
nounced yesterday by Georgre A.
"White, adjutant-general of the state,
from data furnished by the war de-
'partment. This record places Oregon's
loss at Sll men, which is in excess of
estimates made in the past. Of this
"number 318 were killed in action or
died of wiiunds, while the remaining
4S2 died from disease or accidents, in
'camps.
That this list will be supplemented
later is the belief of Colonel White',
who has asked the government to fur
nish a complete record of every man
and woman from Oregon who died in
Jaervice.
. . Others May Be Added.
. , "While the letter that came with the
'tan of red -Casualty cards from Wash
ington, from which Oregon's honor
role was completed, said that the list
.-Was practically complete, it suggested
"that a few other names might be
-.found mixed in with the records of
other states.
The record does not include those
who died while serving in the navy
or in the army nurse corps. Such
records and additional names may in-
- crease the total list a hundred or
more, it was explained.
Multnomah, county sustained the
heaviest loss among Oregon's coun-
ties, and Portland's losses are the
largest among Oregon cities. A total
a of 239 men from Multnomah county
'gave their lives. Of this number 99
were killed in action and 140 died of
other causes. Marion county suffered
the second greatest loss with a total
-o 60 men, of which 23 were killed in
. Action, 35 died, of disease and two of
causes not given.
Lane county is third on the list with
.14 men killed in action, 29 died of
disease and two killed in accidents,
A total loss of 45 men.
Minor Inaccuracies Found.
In checking the list a number of
"minor inaccuracies were discovered
at the adjutant-general's office, and
.the request is made that all relatives
.advise the Salem office in the event
of errors detected and also in the
. event of any omissions in order that
i" correction of the official list may be
taken up with the casualty bureau at
. Washington.
.." The record In the case of each man
.Bives a brief military history of his
.movements by showing the organiza
tions to which he belonged and the
. battles in which he engaged. All the
rreat major offensives in France and
.JBelgium claimed their toll of Oregon
Tiien, the Marne, Aisne, Champlaign,
Jleuse, Argonne, St. Mihiel and actions
in the Vosges. Colonel White an
nounced that this information, will be
supplied to all relatives of dead sol
diers who apply.
In addition to the list of dead.
Colonel White has asked for the rec
ord of every man who entered the
army from Oregon, and has been ad
vised that these will be sent with as
little delay as possible. This consign
ment of service cards will number
more than 32,000 and will enable the
state to have a record in detail.
