Kver since the earliest days of auto.
mobile racing, when it was almost as
much of a Ramble whether a car
would actually start in a race as was
its ability to finish, the designers
and manufacturers of all kinds of
automotive engines and vehicles have
been learning valuable lessons from
the coiests on the speedways of the
world.
Among other things that racing has

These, together with the countless
minor lessons taught by auto racing,
have been invaluable In building up
the third largest industry In the
United States.
As far back as 1895 the year El
wood Haynes in his first car was
held up for speeding on a Chicago
boulevard there were auto races, al
though there were no speedways un
ti! a good many years later. And one
year earlier 1894 there was an un
official contest from Faris to itouen,
in which a! Panhar and a Peugeot
attained the record rate of speed.
France was the first nation to take
up racing in earnest.
Following is the record of some of
the earlier efforts in the country:
In 1S0.1, over a distance of 740.2 miles.
Pan hard, with 3Vx -horsepower engine, won
with an average spued of 14.9 miles per
hour.
In covering 1440 miles. Panhsrd.
with lH-horsepow er engine, won with an
av.-rase speed of 31 9 miles per Hour.
In ID"'), over a 740.2-mlla course. Mors,
with 18-hornepowcr engine, won with an
average of 52 miles per hour.
In 1802 at Dourdan. Mors, with a flying
start, traveled one mile at the rate of
7o.-l miles per hour.
Racing passed from the experi
mental stage and car makers learned
that a combination of minimum
horsepower and maximum vehicle had
its limitations. Then came the Gordon
Bennett races from 1900 to 1905. the
trophy given by James Gordon Ben
nett of the New York Herald.
Makers Taught Many Thing.
One of the lessons brought home
here was the fact that the develop
ment of pneumatic tires had not kept
pace with improvements of a me
chanical nature. Other weaknesses
were also gradually eliminated. More
attention was given to transmission
.design, frames were strengthened to
withstand the stresses Imposed by
fast work on rough roads and
troubles with steering gears and front
axles were gradually overcome. Rac
ing was proving its worth to the
manufacturer who was willing to
learn.
In 1912 the Coupe de l'Autom, run
off simultaneously with the Grand
Prix In France, furnished the first
demonstration of a limited maximum
engine capacity. Only cars with 3
iiter. or 1S3 cubic inch pison dis
placement, were allowed to compete,
and the feature of the race was that
there was little difference between the
winning times In this race and in the
Grand Prix, where all the cars were
much bigger. This is of peculiar in
terest, inasmuch as the 183-inch
measurements go into effect for
American races beginning with this
year's Indianapolis classic.
By 1914 demountable wire wheels
had displaced wood for racing and
stream-lined bodies of extreme type
were used universally. A better un-
derstanding of the relation of un
spring weight to the car as a unit had
been arrived at and the racing ma
chine had assumed the general ap
pearance It possesses today.
First 2 1-Hour Performance.
, Reliability, endurance and economy
runs of various kinds formed Eng
lund's first attempts in the racing
IJiic. but with the construction of the
famous Erooklands speedway the
Cuited Kincdom began to play a
j'rominent part in the yearly racing
calendar. This was also the world's
first real speedway. It is (or was. for
it-was partially destroyed during the
war) a cement tracK, with a circuit or
1.88 miles in length, and a finishing
straightaway .625 mile long.
. A few weeks after the completion
of this tract a six-cylinder Napier
made the first 24-hour performance
on record, S. F. Edge remaining at the
wheel throughout the long grind. In
Pecember, 1907. the first electrical
timing device ever made was installed
at the Krooklands track.
In 1906 Hemery in an S5-horsepow-rr
Bcnz made 127.84 miles an hour
from a flying start, his time being
taken for half a mile. A small Clem
ent Talbot car established a new rec
ord on the Rrooklands track in 1913,
Q-aveling 103 miles 1470 yards In an
hour. The big Benz, formerly piloted
ly Hemery. crowded two mile into
3 minute for the first time on a speed
way in 1914 on Brooklands course,
although this time had already been
made on a straightaway in the United
Slates.
The New York to Rochester endur
ance run in 1901 taught United States
auto manufacturers a world of things,
as many faults in design and Inherent
aeaknesses were disclosed. Engines
and transmission had ben developed
to higher degree than had the run
ning gear.
7.5 Miles Hoar Once Record.
T'Other and later tests were conduct
ed and results improved steadily
the lessons of the road and track
?.-ere taken to heart by car manufac
urcrs. Jt was not until 1908 that an
American-made car won a notable
victory. In that year a Locomobile,
piloted by Robertson, won the Van
derbilt, averaging 64.3 miles per
. hour.
' 'After all. It has been on the speed
way and on straightaway tests like
Daytona that the real records have
eeen made and the real trials fur
nished American designs. Most nota
ble of all achievements In the speed
line was Ralph De Palma's 1919 rec
ord of ISO miles an hour made at
ieytona Beach a far cry from the
day when a Duryea made 7.S miles an
trour over a 5 i-mile course at Chicago
In 1S95.
Indianapolis, Shecpshead Bay and
Chicago all have their famous speed
ways, and Los Angeles' new track at
Beverly Hills is in many ways the
superior of them all. With its com
pletion a new chapter in the world s
racing nibtory has started.

"In the kingdom of rubber, cotton
1 king, and in Akron, capital of the
rubber industry, interest centers not
around rubber but cotton," says John
W. Maguire, vice-president and gen
eral manager, for Portage tires.
"Proving- himself a fickle monarch.
King Cotton, who so long has supplied
his flurry strands for the making of
wearing apparel, has, as the result
of the great growth of the tire in
dustry, turned his favor In that direc
tion. Through the increasing de
mands for cotton fabrics for tires,
manufacturers of hosiery, knitted un
derwear and clothine are warning of
a possible shortage in their products.
"In the tire industry the demand
for long staple cotton fable has be
come a subject for deep concern. It
is not generally realized that cotton
is as necessary in the manufacture of
tires as rubber. An idea of the de
mand for cotton fabrics by tire man
ufacturers may he got from the fact

car was made when the extensive
Gobi desert of 3500 miles was trav
ersed in China. The trip was made by
George MoskovsM, formerly an of

AUTO TRICKS ARE HIT HARD
California Chicken Center Puts Up
License Scale.
PETALUMA, Cal., March 20. The
Marin county board of supervisors
has passed an ordinance providing
for annual license of $50 per ton on
.all auto trucks over two tons oper
ating on the state highway and on all
roads in the county. '
The ordinance will affect Petaluma
and Sonoma county dealers, who op
erate trucks for the purpose of de
livering feed, lumber and materials
to the ranchers residing adjacent to
this city and whose ranches are in
Marin county.
There are more than 60 trucks
delivering goods daily In Marin
county, and the owners will have to
take out the license and. therefore,
make an added charge for goods
bought here and delivered out of
the county.
The scale of licenses will be as

Transportation Engineer to Obtain
Data for Reducing Cost
Per Ton-Mile.
In keeping with its policy to give
efficient service to present and pros
pective owners of motor trucks, the
Garford Motor Truck company of
Lima, O., has established a new de
partment, tile duties of which will be
to gather authoritative information
on the operation of motor trucks and
to aid owners to obtain lowest cost
per ton-mile.
This department is known as the
transportation engineering depart
ment. It is in charge of a transpor
tation engineer, whose long experi
ence with motor trucks and haulage
problems makes him particularly
fitted for this work.
The department will investigate the
operation of Garford trucks in all
parts of the country, obtaining data
on operating costs in actual service.
In each case an exhaustive investiga
tion will be made of every detail en
tering into the operation and main
tenance of the trucks in use, includ
ing problems in loading and routing,
methods of delivery, housing, repair
ing and driving. t
Several days will be spent with the
drivers of these trucks to procure
definite records of mileage and gas
oline consumption. Much study will
be given to the kinds and quantities
of loads hauled, the distribution area,
Trades and conditions of highways,
climatic conditions. frequency of
stops, speeds which may be main
tained in conformance with conditions
and state and town laws. In fact,
every item bearing on truck operat
ing and maintenance.
From these investigations will be
obtained authentic information on
costs that will determine the cost
per ton-mile.
As a result of this research, the
transportation engineering depart
ment will be able to recommend such
changes In systems as are. necessary
to obtain the lowest cost per ton-mile,
at the same time increasing the haul
ing efficiency of the trucks. Through
this work the drivers will obtain a
better understanding of how trucks-
should be operated to maintain econ
omy of operation.

came back, and many another good
man has never been heard of again.

that region Is, let me say that for ten
days after leaving Barstow we never
passed ' an automobile. It seems
strange that within 300 miles of a
large city there could be any district
where we could drive all day for ten
days without passing a car, but that
was the case tin this investigation.
That, however, is the very reason why

maps of Death valley region are not
accurate and complete in showing the
roads trails and Hater holes. If ever
there was a situation in the south
west where an accurate map is neces
sary, that is the very place, in spite
of the fact (or rather because of the
fact) that thero is so little travel.
Probably that was the reason why
Marion Grosse last July never re
turned to Shoshcne. 1 talked with
Dad" Fairbanks, the last man who
saw Grosse alive, and he believes that
Grosse died wnile trying to get back
from the floor of Death valley to his
place at Shoshono.
