ycMerday following; the receipt of word
from California refiners of a similar ad
vance in refinery prices. Susar is now up
to the 16-ccnt mark, whole-ale, the high
et iirice at which it has ever sold in this
market. The advance waa not entirely
unexpected as raw sugars have been very
firm In the cast, brokers' wires showing an
advance of 91.73 In raws In the past few
days. A further lift in the price of re
fined sugar would occasion no surprise.
The trade Is of the opinion that had the
president been disposed to authorise the
purchase of sugar last fall, no such ex
treme prices would be rutins; la the domes
tic market today. At that time the Cuban
jrowers were ready to contract for the
fa?e of their output at reasonable prices,
but soma Interests, presumed to be the
southern cane growers and the beet sugar
people., were opposed to government inter
ferenre and the market was thrown wide
open. Since that time, the strong Euro
pean demaud, as well as American buying,
have enabled the Cuban planters to ad
vance their prices to a very high level.
Referring to the favorable position now
occupied by the Cuban producer because
of this largu world demand, an official of
one of the largest American refineries

the large demand that refiners are ex
periencing, because of the present desire
of everyone to accumulate supplies, and
this will keep refiners running at full
capacity during a period of the year when
they normally have to operate with a re
duced melt. This serves to prevent the ac
cumulation in Cuba of such large stocks

until we get into the summer season when
there is a normal increased demand.

NEW YORK, March 20. Sharp advances
in several of the motor shares and-related
specialties monopolized the attention of
traders during today s brief but very active
stock market session. General Motors were
the spectacular feature, scoring an extreme
rise of 4ti points at 308 on an enormous
turnover and closing at 380. " Stutz Motors
were next in favor at a net gain of 10
points to 220, a new nigh record and an
advance of 77 points for the week.
Equipments and oils were in demand
with coppers and shippings. Sales were
000 shares.
Buying of metals resulted from reports
that ateps were under way for the organi
zation of a finance corporation to provide
funds for huge exports ot coppers and
other base metals.
A moderate reversal In foreign exchange
seemed to exert little influence upon the
stock market. The clearing house state
ment disclosed a deficit of actual excess
reserves, which was . ascribed to heavy
trunsfers of cash in connection with the
week's tax payments.
Liberty bonds remain unsteady, but the
general bond market waa firm on a fairly
wide variety of dealings. Total sales (pur
value), $7,775,000. old United States gov
ernment bonds ,were unchanged on call
during the weok, except the 2h, coupon and
registered, which advanced half per cent.

MARCH CORN IN STRONG DEMAND
Bids Are Advanced $2 at Merchants' Ex
change Wheat Higher East.
The Minneapolis wheat market was
strong yesterday and about 10 cents higher.
There was not much trading in this sec
tion. A little was offered by dealers, but
there were not many buyers In the mar
ket. Club was quoted at cents prem
ium and hard wheat at 4."60 cents.
Coarse grains were generally firm.
March corn bids were raised 92 at the
Merchants' Exchange while April and May
were up 50 cents. Offers for oats ranged
from unchanged to SI -higher. Barley
bids were the same as Friday. At San
Francisco August barley sold at 2.81 Vj
and December at tx.SO. May barley at
Chicago cs&sed 4 cents higher at $1.50.
Weather conditions in the middle west,
as wired from Chicago: "Generally clear
and fine all over. Forecast, all states fair
tonight and Sunday, warmer."
Argentine whest shipments this week
were 1.255.000 bushels to the I nlted King
dom, 1,070,000 to the continent and 200,-
000 to other ports.
Broomhall cabled from Liverpool: "The
undertone of the corn situation remains
firm with a fairly good demand for the
Plate grades. For April-May shipment
from Argentina 80s6d to 81s appears to be
the market. Trade in American mixea
corn is not active. Argentina shipments ot
corn are again disappointing and no im
provement in the outward movement Is
expected. The market for foreign oats
countinues heavy, with offerings in ex
cess of demand."

Most of the Supply at Yards Comes Direct.
Only a few head of stock changed hands
at the- yards yesterday. Fifteen loads
were received, consisting of 76 cattle, 755
hogs and 581 sheep, but most of the stock
came direct. There was no change in the
market situation at the close ot the week.
Bogs continued steady, but other ' lines
were inclined to be weak.

damage to the wheat crop In the south
west gave a smart upturn today to the
price or corn. Closing quotations were
strong, 2-c to 3c net higher, with May
$1.55 to $1.55 and July $1.48 to
$1.48. Oats gained le to lc and pro
visions 15 to 50 cents.
Corn opened weak, but soon began to
rally. Free selling on the part of com
mission houses was responsible for the

continued upwards throughout the session.
Kaieipts remain, small and country offer

portant, hence the stagnation in the cash
