CITY WILL BE BOOSTED Social Features to Be Promoted to Combat Disintegration of Family Life. Organization of a community serv ice association by prominent men and women of the city during the past week puts Portland once more to the front, this being; the first larse city to take this action, according to a statement issued yesterday. It is the purpose to sustain the records made here during- the war. which put Tort land in the front rank of patriotism and co-operative effort and made its name famous throughout the country. A number of well-known men and women of the city met last Wednes day at the Chamber of Commerce and discussed the situation, later forminK the organization, with the following officers: W. F. Woodward, president: Mar shall Dana, first vice-president; San ford Lowengart, treasurer: Estcs Snedecor. secretary; Otto Hartwi?, William D. Wheelwright, third vice president: Harold Wendel. second vice-president; J. H. Joyce. Elizabeth Bain. Mary Frances Isom and Charies F. BerR. According: to announcement, the Community Service association work will not be done by an outside organ ization, but by Portland citizens who wish to give of their time and talents in constructive effort for the upbuild ing of the city. It will largely take the form of neighborhood organiza tion for the promotion of athletics, social affairs. music, educational courses., drama and general good times. It is hoped to combat by these means the rapid disintegration of family life. It has no intention of attempting to build up a big- paid staff, but to afford opportunity for those who have a desire to be of service to the community. "It is hoped," says the formal state ment Just issued, "that all persons in terested will become members of the association. Members are classified according to the amount of their sub scriptions active. $1; contributing. $10: supporting. $25. and sustaining. $100. A $100 membership secures no more privileges than the $1 member ship, but simply multiplies the use fulness of the association. "It is not plann-ed to put on a "drive" to secure funds. Memberships will be solicited to establish and main tain the work. The organizers of the movement feel confident that the re sults achieved by the War .'amp Com munity Service in its work for service men indicates what can be done in a general community programme. "An information service under a trained and efficient director, where practically any question asked by a puzzled or curious visitor can be in telligently answered, is being planned. This service should perhaps be called the hospitality branch of the service, since it is through it that a hospita ble and courteous greeting is extended to visitors."
