The weak closed with ,Jhe local apple
market quiet and prices showing a. declin
ing tendency. Spltzenbergs, extra fancy,
were sreneratly quoted at $2.50Gi 3, and
fancy at $.202.50. Some extra fancy
Homes, 3 and 4 tier were offered at
93.25. Supplies of Ortleys are cleaning up
and a few extra fancy sold at $2 and or
chard run at $1.50. Extra fancy Newtowns
were held at $2 & 3. 'W'friesaps are also
cleaning; up. A few sales of ordinary con
dition fancy grade were reported at $1.15
V 1.40. various varieties of -'Cooking;; ap
ples ware listed at $101.50.
Shipments of Oregon apples on Friday
were 34 cars. At the eastern auction sales
during the Bay the movement was slow
with prices ranging from weak to steady.
Conditions in the f. o. b. markets were
wirea as follows: T akima. Romes, extra
fancy, medium to large. $2; car run, $1.75
mall, $1.50; Winesaps. extra fancy, medi
um and large. S2.Su; Wenatchee, Romes,
lancy, medium to large. $1.90; other dis
trict, no sales reported; Rochester, very
light wire Inquiry. Demand and movement
low, market wak; some stock of ordi

their recent successes, short interests in the
stock market made further efforts to un
settle prices today.
For a time their attacks caused a sharp
reversal from the strons coening. leaders
in the high-priced speculative divisions,
notably General Motors. Crucible Steel,
Mexican Petroleum, American Woolen and
united States Rubber, recording groas de-
Substantial, buying orders set in while

losses were largely retrieved. Sales
amounted to 625,000 shares. -
Active domestic bonds, including specu
lative rails, were slightly higher, but lib
erty Issues continued extremely irregular

United states bonds were- unchanged on
call during the week.
Fulfilling general expectations, - the
clearing house statement showed a sub
stantial increase of actual reserves, effac
ing last week's deficit and leaving a mod
erately large excess.
Mercantile authorities reported mixed
conditions in many lines of trade, the sit
uation in the main, however, pointing to
further expansion at distributing centers.

coast and prices are climbing. It is be
tween seasons and Jobbers find it diffi
cult to get supplies anywhere except in
southern California. The Pront-street
quotation has been advanced to 6' cents

Irf the east the cabbage markets are

ern New York shipping section at 90

kets advanced about 20 for this stock, clos
ing at 1001.20. Wisconsin Holland seed

field sold in Philadelphia and Baltimore
at $3-3.25 per lu bushel hamper,, a drop
of 25 cents from last week. The demand

A slightly weaker tendency was reported
In the local potato market. The best Bur
banks were hold at $4. 50 '84. 73 in large
lot. Yakima Gems were quoted at $4.75
ot 5.25. One car of Oregon potatoes arrived.
Shipments Friday were two cars to Stock
ton, one to San Francisco and one to Roee

market is scheduled for Monday morning
when a country buying price of 45 cents

Short Interest. '
NEW YORK, Jan. 17. In the absence of
constructive developments, the securities
market this week entered upon another
period of liquidation, the decline receiving
substantial assistance from an emboldened
short interest.
Selling was most active and price im
pairment most severe in a number of low
grade "promotion" issues, especially oils
and a few shares of no special classifica
tion. The reaction ultimately affected
other stocks of more stable character. -
Among issues exempt from the general
decline were rails, metals and representa
tive industrials of the steel division.- United
States steel, for example, continued to re
flect its strong tonnage position.
The money and foreign exchange mar
kets contributed largely to the shrinkage
of quotations. . Demand loans manifested
marked relaxation, but time money was al
most unobtainable, even at 64 per cent
for the short dates. 1
' Partly because of the latest and more
menacing conditions in eastern Europe, but
mainly because of continued delay va ef
fecting remedial measures, foreign ex
change once more moved strongly against
London and European centers. The ster
ling rate fell to $3.68 U.
The receptive -attitude of American in
vestors and bankers toward foreign olfer
ings was strikingly illustrated in the suc
cess which attended the $25,000,000 Bel
gian roan.
