THE longest lift bridge in the
world is to bo opened to traffic
at Chicago during the frt-esent
month. It was built by the Illinois
Central railroad and spans the Chi
cago river. The balance weight is
nearly 1,000,000 pounds'. Construc
tion required more than two years
for this engineering masterpiece.

Antelope are known to naturalists
as the most wary of the wild animals.
At YellowstoneNational park the of
ficials have expended every dollar at
their disposal to buy' hay for the
antelope, deer and elk deprived of
forage by the heavy snowfall. Baby
Robert M. Albright was recently
caught by the camera as he fed a
young antelope that driven by hun
ger lost its natural fear of the near
approach of human beings.
With a newly-invented, armor div
ing suit, John F. Turner of Philadel
phia, has performed work on the
ocean bed at a depth of 360 feet. The
inventor of this device is a colored
mechanic, Charles H. Jackson. The
diver is lowered and raised by a
winre operated over a derrick arm.
The first test to which this new suit
will be aplied is a projected attempt
to recover 130.000,000 . worth of gold
bullion from the hold of the British
liner Laurentic torpedoed by the
Germans off the Irish coast.
Henry Clay Frick willed to the city
of New Tork his palatial home at
Fifth avenue and Seventieth street
as a museum for the art collection
it contains, said to be the finest in
America. "The Polish Rider," by
Rembrandt. Is said to be one of the
best paintings and ia valued at
$500,000.
Dr. and Mrs. Wilfred Grenfell,
medical missionaries to Labrador, re.
cently visited the- United States In
the interest of establishing institu
tutes for North Sea fishermen as an
appreciation for the heroic work per
formed in maintaining patrols in the
mine fields during the war. Twelve
of Dr. Grenfcll's cousins made the
supreme sacrifice during the conflict.
He is well-known in society circles
at the national capital and was best
man at the marriige of Miss Jessie
Wilson, daughter of the president, to
Mr. Sayre.
In a New Tork bank a "pill-box" has
beea built in a commanding position
in the lobby, wherein two armed
guards are constantly on duty to
protect a gain ;-t robbery. Armed with
high-power rifles, they can cover the
entire floor space of the institution
with the guns.
Belgians are establishing them
selves in homes built from the
wreckage of war. At Tpres an
"estimet" or cafe has been built with
circular strips of corrugated iron
salvaged from dugouts. Living rooms
for the family have been arranged
in the rear of the queer building.
