Retail merchants of Oregon will
tage a double-barreled convention
in Astoria on February 16. IV and is
Tile convention will see the consoli
dation of the Oregon State Retailers'
association and the Oregon Retail
Merchants" association, rivals who
last summer agreed upon consolida
tion. Plans for the coming convention
were completed In detail at a meet
ing last week at the offices of the
Portland Grocers and Merchants' as
sociation, when a state executive
committee representing both state
merchants' organizations met for this
purpose.
The committee consists of George
Cusiter of Silverton. chairman; N. A.
Perry and Norman L. Crout of Port
land," J. G. Garret of Hillsboro and
I A. Rosenkrans of Canby.
Others Attend Meeting.
Meeting with these committeemen
e-oficio were Charles V. Brown of
Alitoria, president of the Oregon State
Retailers' association; G. Clifford
Barlow of Warrenton, president of
the Oregon Retail Merchants' associa
tion, and Kdward A. MacLean of
Portland who was recently made sec
retary of both state associations,
pending- the final consolidation at the
Astoria convention.
The Astoria Chamber of Commerce,
Which will be host to the convention,
was represented at the meeting by
C. I. Barr. J. L. Tucker and Otto A
Owen, members of the Oregon State
Retailers' association also were
present.
"The Astoria men have planned a
live programme of entertainment for
Oregon's retail merchants," says Sec
retary MacLean. "The convention
itself will be a big and important
one, especially because this will be
the first time in five years that the
retailers of the state will meet to
gether after having been split into
two hostile camps.
Profiteering? Is Denied.
"The cry about profiteering by re
tail merchants has sounded in every
body's ears, but the Oregon retail
merchants are not guilty. At the
last session of the state legislature
was necessary for committees of our
organization to do a lot of work in
defeating various radical and revo
lutionary schemes proposed by legis
lators. no doubt with the best of In
tentions, but without any knowledge
or experience concerning retail busi
noss. The members of our organiza
tion are for community progress, for
unless our communities prosper the
retail merchants certainly cannot
prosper but they are going to inter
est themselves this coming year in
seeing who goes to the legislature.
"They hope to see and will ork
for the election of the highest type
of candidates who can be induced to
run in every community in order that
our next state legislature will speed
up the growth, and prosperity of the
state with sound and sane legis
lation." A meeting will be held on January
6 to perfect every detail of the plans.

known for efficiency of their work
are being sought for positions in the
east at flattering" salaries. Several
men have accepted places elsewhere
because of tFfe inability of the 'col
lege to meet salary demands, while
others who have received offers at
material advance In pay have refused
through loyalty to the institution or
because of the 'possibilities for ef
fective work here in their chosen
fields.
E. J. Fjelsted of the animal hus
bandry staff, who has been doing
what livestock men consider important
work for the state livestock Interests,
has wired from Idaho that he has
accepted a J3600 position as extension
specialist in Illinois.
"It is unfortunate that the serv
ices of Mr. Fjelsted cannot be re
tained," said Dean A. B. Cordley of
the school of agriculture. "The col
lege resources are strained to the
limit and because of this fact It is lm
possible to hold him. Within the last
30 days four members of the staff in
agriculture have resigned and three
others have received offers at consid
erably larger salaries, but we are
helpless in the matter.
"Within a year the college lost
practically its entire staff In horti
culture, but had again succeeded In
building up a satisfactory staff when
two or three weeks ago three of the
new men received flattering offers.
The college, however, has succeeded
in retaining them, although not be
cause of Increase In salary."

BERKELEY TO CELEBRATE
Municipal Christmas Exercises to
Be Held in Theater.
BERKELEY, Cal.. Dec. 20. The city
of Berkeley will hold a municipal
Christmas celebration in the Greek
theater at the University of California
here.
"Abraham and Isaac," a drama of
the miracle-play type, will be present
ed. Christmas carols will be sung and
an interlude by Charles Keeler, the
Berkeley, poet, will be produced.
K. E. Lowe, a student at the uni
versity, will play the part of Abraham
in the drama; fcj. C. Plunkett will ap
pear as the angel, and Dr. D. A. Pitt,
pastor of the First Baptist church, is
to be the expositor. Frederick McCon
nell will play the part of Isaac. A
chorus 4t monks will feature the production.
Total of British Army 6,100,000.
LONDON, Dec. 20. The total num
ber of officers and men who passed
through the British army during the
war was approximately 6,190,000. Be
tween August, 1914, and October 31
of this year, 236,035 honors, exclusive
of those conferred by the royal air
force, were awarded by the British
war office for services in the field
and 13,352 for other services In con
nection -with the war. There were
B77 recipients of the Victoria cross,
Britain's highest war decoration.
