THE SUXDATT OREGOXIAN,- PORTXAyP, NOVEMBER 16, 1919. E AND NOW COMES THE NEW 1920 STANLEY STEAMER, THE HANDSOMEST STANLEY MODEL . EVER TURNED OUT. This Is Worst Bugaboo of Be ginning Motorist. One car smashed EASY WHEN YOU LEARN IT 10 in every ten ft yjf X j' la Shifting- to tower Gear, It's Im portant to Remember Motor Should Be Speeded Up. Changing gears seems to be little understood by a good many automo bile drivers, and a' few remarks on the subject may be of interest to those who like to do as little grind ing as possible. To make things clear, start your motor and remove floor boards. Get on the driver's seat and throw out clutch. You can observe the clutch shaft slow up and come to a stop. Whether it stops slowly or quickly will denend on the state of lubrlca tion of the bearings and also the thickness of the oil in the gear case. The thicker it is the more quikly the clutch will stop. From the foregoing it is evident that if you attempt to put in the gear immediately after throwing out the clutch, there will be a frightful grinding so frequently heard. Therefore, the proper method in starting is to wait a few seconds before ensaging In gear so that the clutch shaft and gears will be at rest or nearly so. In making shifts upward, a certain interval must elapse after the clutch in out before making the shift, to let the gear shafts assume their proper relative speeds. It you nave a quicn lv .tannine- clutch the interval should be short; a slow-stopping clutch, the interval should be longer. AfaVine- shiftB downward Is more difficult. A great mistake so often made is releasing the accelerator, thus Blowing down the motor. In the lower gear the motor must go ftr than it did just before the change, so the obvious thing is to keeo the throttle open (the habit of releasing the accelerator when the clutch is thrown out Is hard to break or, a irnnH t1h is to open the throt 4iA r.n the wheel a little way) Tk. slower the gear lever is moved the more momentum the clutch shaft will lose. Therefore, shitt as quicKiy nnBuihi. On come cars this meth od will work well. On others it will not, and the best practice to follow i ,h9t the English call aouoie clutching that is, the clutch is just touched to release torque on trans mission, so that gear can be thrown nut. and momentarily ciuicn .is n gaged again, throttle remaining open all the time. The engine speeds up and with it clutch shaft and gear, so that when the clutch is again touched the gears are approximately the proper speeds for them to slip in noiselessly. All this is done very quickly. It is, how ever, difficult to do right and re quires practice. -J0 X-Z- ----- y; l?f- j .Ms-k .-X.i.v.. But Nowadays the Woman Buyer Is More Interested in Car's Per formance Than Before. "Woman is rapidly coming to the front in the purchasing of motor cars and it is literally true that com- ..iiv.i f motorcar sales are now made in which a woman does not have considerable influence, says 1 w Tii yv tna.na.irer of the Howard An r.omnany. Buick distributors hare. "Tii van recoenized years ago, as veteran motorcar dealers know, but at that time woman's Interest In cars seemed to be centered chiefly in the r H p ! And when ehe did ex press her opinion concerning one of the open models, it was usually along H lines of appearance, finish and refinements. "Vnr thi reason, there was a gen eral impression in the industry that Tonmon were inclined to take the me- .k.niii -at ii rps of a motorcar for granted and the first move of the lmin was to place the woman buver in the tonneau, invite her to be seated and call her attention to the i-nmfort. roominess and luxury there, "But since that time, women have loomed to drive not merely a few and there, but in great numbers. Marv women have Buick cars for their own exclusive use. Others share a car with one or more other members of the family. And as a result of their N driving, women have been drawn more lntimatelv in touch with the myste rious forces and mechanism that give life and action to the motorcar ana today their interest in the mechanical side of the automobile is great. "True, women are still very much taken up with beauty, convenience, and comfort. For that matter, so are the male motorist. These are features that the motor-car purchaser of today has a right to expect, particularly among the better makes of cars. But the salesman can no longer expect to sell a motorcar to a woman driver without first satisfying her as to the performance and operation of the various mechanical units. 'The change is logical when ana lysed. For after all. the woman driv i er in many cases has had sufficient experience to know that motoring en joyment depends to a great extent upon the right kind of mechanical equipment and she also knows that Buick design and manufacture have a great deal to do with maintenance cost. "Gasoline being the biggest in dividual item of expense, the woman has been led to inquire why it is that Buick cars give big gasoline mileage, while others of about the same eize and weight simply devour fuel. And she has found the answer in the de sign and construction of the most im portant mechanism of all the Buick valve-in-head motor." ONE WAV TO WRECK TIRES Service Truck Company Prepares a Table That Is Full of Use ful Information. Answering the question as to what size farm can use a motor truck profitably, the Service Motor Truck company has prepared a table of 12 specific instances where the proprie tors of the farms utilized motor transportation with considerable suc cess. Regarding this table as being one of particular interest to farmers in this region, the Service Truck Sales company of Portland is directing at tention of local ranchers to it with the hopes that it will help them in the solution of their own transporta tion problems. The table embraces farmers who operate within a distance of 2 to 30 miles; that is, they live that far from their nearest towns. The farms noted embrace from 40 to 450 acres. The table follows: A Lives 6 miles from town, farms 65 acres; raises berries principally. B Lives 20 miles from town, farms 120 acres; principal products, wheat, milk and cream. C Lives 20 miles from town, farms 100 acres; principal products, fruit. milk and cream. D Lives 2V4 miles from town; farms 90 acres, principal products; wheat and milk. E Lives 5 miles from town; runs 0 bee farms located 6 to 23 miles from his home. Products, bees and honey. F Lives 20 miles from town, farms 240 acres; produces apples, potatoes, hay and grain. G Lives 5 miles from town; farms 115 acres; dairy products. H Lives 16 miles from town: farms 360 acres; produces hay, grain and garden fruit. I Lives 22 miles from town; farms 76 acres; produces fruit. J Lives 18 miles from town; farms 50 acres, produces pork and beef. K Lives 4JA miles from town; farms 450 acres; produces peas, sweet corn and wheat. Lives 30 miles from town, farms 22 acres; produces apples. From the foregoing it is pointed out, one can see that the size of the farm and the diBtance from town have little to do with the -profitable use of a truck. Big farms, little farms, farms close to town or at a consider able distance are using motor trucks successfully and profitably. Irrespec tive of the distance it can be covered a third or a half of the time re quired with horses and a bigger load can be hauled. If it takes a day to go to town and back with team one can make the trip in half a day with a truck and have the other half day to work in the field. If it takes one an hour to cover the trip with a team one can do it in 30 minutes or less with a motor truck. 9 -A i . AUTO BUILDERS IX UNION VELIE TRUCKS POPULAR ITS OWNERS ARE ITS ADVERTISERS. BEST Demand for These Trucks So Great in Past Few Years, Factory Is Still Behind. Running in Car Tracks Certain to Reduce Tire Life. Injuries resulting from running truck tires in car tracks are serious and readily apparent. Their construe tion does not permit of ready distrlbU' tion of a part of the load to the low er flange of the rail, so the major part of the load is carried upon the upper section of the car rail. This throws the entire load on one-half of the tire tread, with the result that it is rapidly worn or broken away on that sid. jeventually leaving the tire. Fifty years ago a motor truck was about as remote a possibility as a commercial airplane. Little did the men who established the small factory for the manufacture of plows and farming Implements and which later developed an interna tional name and reputation the John Deere Plow company foresee that their BO years of experience would some day help in the solving of the gigantic problem of highway trans portation. But when the gas engine came to displace the horse, the men who were behind the great manufacturing con cern diverted a considerable portion of their attention, skill and energy to the creation of a motor truck which would do justice to their reputation. The V elie truck was the result. Due largely to war requirements and the consequent stimulated con dition of business throughout the east and middle west, the demand for these trucks has been so great for several years past that the factory has been unable to keep up with it. "Recently, however, the manufac turers have increased the capacity of the plant by the construction of three additional factory buildings at Moline 111., says W. R. DeLay of the T. C Warren Motor Car company, Velie passenger car and truck distributor. This will enable it to keep pace with the demand, and I feel no hesitancy offering Velie trucks. "The new models are equipped with Continental motors. Timken bearings throughout, extra strong brakes and removable tube radiators. The per formance of Velie trucks was highly commended by the officers of the transportation department of the French .xmy." Exhaust Pipe Paint. CHEHALIS, Wash., Nov. 15. (Spe cial.) Seattle and Everett auto truck trasportatlon men who plan to - hook up a through auto truck freighting line between Portland and British Co lumbia boundary incident to the com pletion of the paving of the Pacific highway across western Washington, have just purchased a large tract of and at the corner of Division and National streets in Chehalls for a de pot for their business. With the securing of additional landas near their holdings, the firm plans to have garage room, storage and other conveniences where 40 to 50 auto trucks can be comfortably housed, with a repair shop in connec tion, where their regular work may be conveniently handled. The location of the site Tor their business is the most convenient and accessible in Chehalis, being within block of the Union passenger sta tion, on the Pacific highway and close to the main business center. It is fig ured by those interested that with the completion of the paving of the Pa ciflc highway the bulk of the less than carload lot freighting between Portland and Seattle and other points to the north will be done direct from the jobber to his consumer by auto mobile truck. Already this is true to a -very great extent of all business between points on the sound where hard paved roads connect, and the experiment has even been most successfully tried between Tacoma and Chehalis during favorable summer road conditions. Inasmuch as Chehalis is also at the Junction of the Pacific highway and the National highway, there are wonderful truck freighting possibilities both east and west of this city, along the same line. The state highway paving pro gramme contemplates the paving of the National Park highway extending through eastern Lewis county from Chehalls and connecting with the mountain highway leading from Ta coma at Elbe. Also the western por tion of this same highway, which was changed to the Ocean Beach highway at the last session of the legislature will ultimately be paved to connect Chehalls with the Wlllapa harbor cit ies of Raymond and South Bend thence to Long Beach points and II waco. This portion would put auto freight into all the local points between Che halis and those places. Connection of Chehalls by a paved road and an auto truck freight system between this city and eastern Lewis county, which Is a possibility of the next six or eight years, ten at the outside, will prove of wonderful advantage not only to Che halis but from a development stand point will do wonderful things for the great section of Lewis county to the east of here, which Is today must sus ceptible of development of any por tion of western Washington.
