THE STJSDAT OREGOX1AX. PORTLAND. NOVE3IBER 16, 1919. i lOfiT R. C . Rueschaw Has Apole Orchard of His Own Here. THIS IS COUNTRY FOR HIM tiig Man in Auto Industry, Head of Mitchell Motors Company, Says Roads Will Be Big Asset. One of the best evidences that the iitchell Motors comnanv of Rnrirtp. Wis., has an abiding interest In the progress of the Pacific northwest lies in this fact: That R. C. Rueschaw vice-presiaent and general manauer way, travel over It betna a matter of j considerable peril; I But now he is prond or the lact tni he is one of the few persons who went over that road. During his vis it here he went out the new Columbia highway and his praises of it were all the warmer for having known the old road as it was. Mr. Rueschaw was accompanied to Portland by C. W. Arthur, western manager for the Mitchell Motors com pany. While in Portland Mr. Reus chaw spent considerable of his time with the Mitchell, Lewis & Staver company, which has been northwest distributor of the Mitchell for many years. FORD CARS FOR SALESMEN New York Firms Supply Their Men With Small Runabouts. . "Three hundred Ford runabouts sold in one lot to the Liberty Yeast com pany of New York City is indication that modern industry and competition in business have become so keen and thoroughly developed lhat the heads of America's great commercial firms are convinced that business does not come, but it is gone after," says C. E. Francis, Ford dealer. A., and Earle Heym have established the Lester-Heym company at 49 Sixth street, just next to the Y. M. C. A. automobile school. Both are automobile mechanics of many years' experience and they are specializing In .Dodge repairs. Mr. Heym was for several years Dodge specialist with the Covey Motor Car company. Both he and Mr. Lester have had experi ence in automobile factories. thereof, has an apple orchard in the Yakima valley. Wash., that is truly th- apple of his eye. Mr. Rueschaw, one of the big men of the automobile industry, was in Portland last week. An Interviewer discussing the automobile situation with him learned also that his orchard has 22 Vz acres; that it is named the liuebow fruit ranch; that it Is now producing and paying dividends, and that the Pacific northwest is. after all. the only place even for the head of a big automobile industry to live. Mr. Rueschaw frankly likes the Pa cific northwest. When it rains out here he rambles around without an umbrella like any native. When there is a piercing touch of autumn weather he draws deep breaths and opines that, the ozone is finer than any they have back east. In short, he is "sold" on this country, and any old thing the climate does is all right with him. f'omins Port of Country. But more than that, Mr. Rueschaw declares that the Pacific northwest is the coming Bection of the country. As to being an automobile market it has already arrived, but the number of cars now sold here are few, he says, to what will be sold in the next few years. "You have a fresh outlook on life out here," said Mr. Rueschaw. "And opportunities! I never have seen such opportunities. Looks to me as if a man can go into almost any line, wait a little while, and turn every thing he touches into dollars. That is how your business prospects im press an easterner like myself. "1 like the way you do things here In the west. As an example, your road building activities. Back east we are slower, though we have so many more people, to improve our highways. Here you consider it as a J job that must be done, plunge into it, tear up every road you have. .and re build them all over again into mod ern highways. Perhaps it costs a pood deal in the rebuilding process, I MTV belie'V-e me, you will reap the '"profits many, many fold when the job is done. "It is a progressive business man who knows when to scrap the old out-grown machinery and substitute it with new. The executive who does that must have vision and imagina tion. The same applies to states and road building. You have the vision and the imagination and you will benefit from it more even than you calculate. Good Roads Great Assets. Your roads will become highways for motor truck lines, and your scenery arid fine highways will at tract tourists here in vast numbers More than that, you have something to show them. And behind your great scenery you have great oni-h as mv anule ranch.' Mr. Rueschaw spoke Interestingly if the automobile ituation, so far as -, ha factories are concerned. He said ...v. will be scarce next spring and told the reason why. This reason, he aid. is that -while most factories are r.lrlv well suoplled with materials there are virtually none of. them that all tne materials iney neea. "So small a thing as a little bolt r nut." he said, "can hold up the .ntlra production of a factory. Ma terlals such as these are being used in the great programme of building construction that is just starting to .ika un for lack of building in the past three years. That is making these mrtirles scarce and tnis scarcity win unauestionably affect the output ..ra I don't look for any factory to be able to produce more than three quarters of its capacity for some tim to come. So. naturally, there is bound to be a scarcity of cars next spring. As to the effect on production of the steel strike and the coal strike an other strikes, he declared it to De rood deal of a gamble. One man could ht one way. as he put it, and might win. or the winner might be the bet tt,r on the other side. .NoDoay Know vet just what toe-effect will be, an whatever it is it will be more appar ' nt in a month or so from now tha i it is Just at present. i Went Over Old lllghvray l Mr. Reuschaw left Portland Friday 1 for Salt Lake. Always strain the gaso line through a chamois filter and if you use a measuring stick be sure that it is always clean before it is inserted. See, also, that the surface around the tank is clean before re moving the filler cap. Motorists Who Follow This Prac tice in South Sure to Get Into Trouble. LOS ANGELES, Xov. IB. There will be no more "cutting of corners" on country roads by motorists in south ern California, according to a warn ing sent out by traffic officers throughout the southern part of the state. Many and serious accidents have resulted from carelessness in this re spect, even on rural highways, says the Automobile club of Southern Cal fornia, and that organization is now co-operating with the various ener iffs' offices, in trying to curb the practice and to enforce the Motor Vehicle act, which provides for just such a contingency. Practically every city In the state maintains a special clause tn an ordi nance against corner cutting, it is pointed out, but motorists have de veloped the impression that when in the country they can lew recklessly round corners to their heart's con tent. No longer will this Be counte nanced by traffic officers and motor cycle cops, warns the auto club, and arrests will follow wnerever a ariver is found not making a well-rounded turn at a highway Intersection. There is now a state law to this effect, and the law Is to be enforced to the min ute. On the other hand, there is a warn ing Issued for urban motorists by the club in regard to lighting tail-lights after coming out of a theater or other place of amusement at night. Many motorists forget that they have shut their lights off when leaving the car and fail to light them again, thus lay ing themselves open to arrest.
