THE recent death of Mrs. Ella I Wheeler Wilcox, the well known I poetess, has caused marty Port land people to recall the visit of the poetess to Portland in 1903. She spent several days here, with headquarters at the Portland hotel. At the time of her visit here she was asked by Lewis A. McArthur, now general manager of the Pacific Power & Light company and at that time a reporter on the staff of The Oreponlan, to make a statement as to her favorite poem and to furnish a. copy of the poem so that it could be reproduced in the news columns of The Oregonian. Having no volume of her poems on hand Ella Wheeler Wil cox was unable to furnish a. copy of her favorite poem, which she dated was "High Noon," one of the verses appearing In "poems of Power." She wrote down from memory, however, her favorite of that year, a 1903 New Year's poem and gave it to the re porter. The poem was printed In The Ore aronlan and the original copy, in the Author's own handwriting, was re tained by Mr. McArthur. Recently he loaned the original for publication and a facsimile of several verses of the poem, together with a "transla tion" from pen to type are given herewith. - A New Year's poem of 1903 follows: When with dancing and with singing Comes the year's initial day, I can feel the rythmic swinging Of the world upon its way. And the right still wears her fetter And though justice still is blind. Time's" beyond is always better Than the path he leaves behind. In our eons of existence As we circle through the night We annihilate the distance Twixt the darkness and the light. From beginnings crude and lowly Round and round our souls have trod Through the circles winding slowly Up to knowledge and to God. With each century departed Some old evil found a. tomb. Some old truth was newly started In propitious soul to bloom. With each epoch some condition That has handicapped the race (Worn out creed or euperstltion) Unto knowledge yields its place. Though In folly and in blindness And in sorrow still we grope. Yet in man's increasing kindness Lies the world's stupendous hope. For our darkest hour of error Is &s radiant as the dawn. Yet beside the awful terror Of the ages that have gone. And above the sad world's sobbing And the strife of clan with clan, I can hear the mighty throbbing Of the heart of God in man. - And a voice chants through the chiming Of the bells, and seems to say, "We are climbing, we are climbing. As we circle on our way!" ELLA WHEELER WILCOX. (Continued From P.Ke 10.) Gallagher, General Hals; Mrs. J. T. Pougal. Brigadier-General Atterbury. Gold and Jewels of Spanish Galleon May Be Recovered. "TOBERMORY. Scotland, Oct. 19. X (By the Associated Press.) Salv age operations on the galleon Do Flo rencia, the treasure ship of Spain's invincible armada, sunk off Tober mory 330 years ago, are beginning to yield results. These operations were begun in 1903. Recently several breech-blocks of cannon, bits of the ship's hull and other relics have re warded the treasure hunters' efforts. The De Florencla was sunk by one of the MacLeans of Morven, who fired her powder magazine. If her main stores are retrieved from the sea, the ship should yield a rich haul, for, according to contemporary chron iclere, the ship's stronghold was full of gold, silver plate and Jewels, in cluding a crown intended for the coro nation of the Spanish nominee to the throne of England. By a covenant made shortly after the wreck, this crown, if recovered, goes to the King Women's Advertising Club to Hear Miss Curry. See How Your Teeth Look When the Film 13 Gone It Is Film that causes men's teetb to discolor, and that holds tobacco stains. M V h. T7t m- It Is Film There is on your teeth a slimy film. You can feel it with your tongue. It clings to the teeth, gets between the teeth and stays. The tooth brush doesn't end it. The ordinary dentifrice does not dissolve it. So it clings and, night and day, it may do ceaseless damage. The results are Been everywhere in "cleaner, whiter teeth. Some of your own friends have them. For home use, this method is embodied in a dentifrice called Pepsodent. And this week you can test it at our cost. that clouds women's teeth, spoils their glistening beauty and is the basis of tartar. The Tooth Wrecker That film is the great tooth wrecker. Most tooth troubles are now traced to it. The film is what discolors not the teeth. It is the basis of tartar. It holds food substance which ferments and forms acid. It holds the acid in contact with the teeth to cause decay. Millions of germs breed in it. They, with tartar, are the chief cause of pyorrhea. Also of many other troubles, local and internal. That 'is why well-brushed teeth so often dis color and decay, why tartar forms and pyorrhea starts. You leave much of that film. Tooth troubles are constantly increasing, as statistics show, despite the wide use of the tooth brush. And the reason lies in that film. Now We Combat It Dental science, after years of searching, has now found a way to combat film. Able authorities have proved it by convincing clinical and labora tory tests. Thousands of dentists have proved it, and at least a million people. Based on Pepsin aec us k,,rya-v'r.r'vlmwiTJK, Pepsodent is based on pepsin, the digestant of albumin. The film is albuminous matter. The ' object of Pepsodent is to dissolve it, then to con stantly combat it. Pepsin long seemed impossible. It must be activated, and the usual method is an acid harmful to the teeth. But dental science has discovered a harmless activating method. And that method, used in Pepsodent, enables all to daily use this efficient film combatant. Watch the Results We urge you to present the coupon. Get the 10-Day Tube and use like any tooth paste. Note how clean the teeth feel after using. Mark the absence of the slimy film. See how the teeth whiten how they glisten as the fixed film disappears. Compare the results with your old methods. Then let your own teeth decide the method best for you and yours. This is of lifetime importance. Don't neglect, it. Cut out this coupon so you won't forget. PAT.
