HOME BUILDING IS FELT
Car Situation Reported to Be Little
Improved; Mills Say Require
ments Not Met.
Retail lumber dealers are beginning
to buy their Winter and early spring
requirements already, as indicated by
a sharp increase in ths volume of new
business of the lumber mills, according-
to the weekly report of the Weet
Coast Lumbermen's association. The
total volume of orders accepted bv
115 mills contributing to the report
of the association for the last week
was 73,472.841 feet, an increase of
11.000.000 feet over the week before
and the heaviest week, since the mid
dle of the summer. ,
Retail yard stocks everywhere are
said to be short and pressure from
prospective home builders and other
classes of consumers the country over
indicates a heavy demand for lumber
of all kinds during- the coming year,
the report states. The annual buying
movement, which uwally doe not
start until near the first of the year,
seems already to have set in.
In face of this situation the car
shortage Is not being: materially re
lieved. The mills report that they
are getting- no more than 40 per cent
of their car requirements and in eomo
districts the pinch is even more severe
than that. Railroad authorities are
working to remedy the shortage but
no substantial relief is expected with
in the next 30 days.
Last week the mills booked orders
for g4 cars more than they shipped,
bringing the accumulation of unfilled
rail orders on their books up to 6967
cars.
New business now coming- in is well
proportioned between rail and water
shipments. Cargo orders for the week
were 17.552.638 feet, of which 13.488.
63S feet were for domestic delivery
and 4.104.000 feet for export.
In anticipation of tho tremendous
rush of business now in prospect the
mills continue to operate at full ca
pacity and probably will remain on
that basis, so far as possible, through
the winter. Production at 115 mills
last week aggregated 82.677,000 feet,
which was within l.SS per cent of
normal. But stocks still are short,
approximately 30 per rent. Vnless
the car shortage lastj all winter and
WJWinues to hold up shipments stoi-ks
will not get back to normal busis for
an indefinite period, as there is
enough business in sight, say the
manufacturers, to absorb all their
