TH13 experience of the war and the
demand of the period immediately
succeeding demobilization have
vrought many changes in the Oregon
.Agricultural college and intensified
iriany of its functions. The change
from the semester to the three-term
fcasiH, the reorganization of several
courses of study, together with the
Introduction of new phases of work,
eucli as commercial engineering, agri
cultural engineering, cafeteria manage
ment, physical education ind military
science, nave delayed the publication
of the college catalogue, usually is
sued in June, until August. The de
partments of instruction have been un
usually busy with readjustments, and
with preparations for an anticipated
expansion of their work this fall, when
the largest enrollment in the "history
Df the college is expected.
Knulneerins Oets New Building:.
Engineering, which has felt the push
bf the big mechanical feats of the war,
will have a new laboratory building
ready for its enlarged work in the fall.
Dts enrolj merit has jumped to second
place among the schools of the college,
and promises to hold at least this posi
tion. New men on the faculty, es
refially in civil engineering and me-chanir-il
drawing, strengthen the
leaching staff.
Orcson 1 Forestry Center
I'orestry, which has made a won
derful growth u.s a field of college
training in the past decade, seems on
the eve of still further development as
a. result of the war and the revival of
commercial enterprises consuming
lumber. The American forester, with
liis mastery of machines and engineer
ing, is in demand abroad, where he
thowed his capacity to do in an hour
what the European could scarcely do
in a day.
ti. W. Pea vy, dean of the college
school of forestry, points out to young
men that with 156,000,000 acres of gov
ernment liind permanently, devoted to
growing timber there's a safe field in
our own country for foresters who can
Qualify, by training, for the work. He
shows also that in Oregon, with 13,
000.000 acres of government forest land
and another 1 1,000,000 acres of pri
vately owned forest property, there's
the best field in- the .world for learn
ing the forestry industry. The state
employs 22,000 men in the various
branches of timber and lumber work
sufficient evidence that the state school
of forestry has big enough problems to
solve to enlist 1 he best brawn and
brains of the youths of Oregon.
IliK Bulue In Commerce Training.
In commerce the college has found
It necessary, because of the growth of
the school, to provide more room and
more instructors. All this year's grad
uates have accepted or been offered
posit ions at salaries of $1 00 a month
and upwards. "With a senior class for
next year numbering at least 40, and
with indications of peculiar interest
in the new work in commercial en
gineering, the school looks to better
fven the enrollment of 325 that marked
tbe closing term of the past year.
Mineral Industry Second Greatrat.
The school of mines, t hough one of
the smaller schools of the college, has
en equipment for work that js worthy
of a state whose mineral resources, as
yet undeveloped, are undoubtedly
great. C K. Newt. , dean of the
school, is urging young men to study
mining, calls attention to the fact that
the present age is peculiarly one of
minerals and metals, a statement which
be substantiates by noting thst in point
t tonnage the mineral industry is the
second largest of the country.
Graduates rt Faculty Position.
Home economics, which has increased
so fast in enrollment as to outgrow
Its present quarters and overflow into
the new library building, has added
a new course in tearoom management
to its standard curriculum, which al
ready includes household science and
art, institutional management, applied
design and dietetics. In these latter
line of t raining the school has been
to successful that its graduates are
now holding responsible positions , on
the faculties of state institutions in

The electrical engineering school
gives a three-year course, covering
electricity and magnetism, direct cur
rent and alternating current. The
laboratories are fully equipped for

During the period of the war, the
