Front Hostelrlcs Embraced in
Architect's Plans.
One of the most complete and elab
orate beachv hotels north of California
will be constructed by the hotel cor
poration operating th Seaside hotel at
Seaside, according to plans for the en
largement and re-construction of the
present hotel building. Plans and
ilrawings for the new hotel have just
been completed by Johnson & Parker,
architects.
The new building, which will con
lam more than 300 rooms and baths,
will be in the form of a letter "E."
with the present Seaside hotel aa the
rifiht-hand wing after it has undergone
complete revision. The total length of
the building will be about 300 feet,
while the wings will be 70 feet in
length.
The plans, as completed by the archi
tects, provide for a spacious lobby and
lounge room, a dining room to seat
several hundred persons, a palm garden,
billiard room, bowling alley, audi
torium, sun porches, roof garden and
all the other features common .to the
best seaside hostelries.
Pergolas will extend out from the
building to the board walks, which will
t-onfine the foreground of the hotel,
thus producing a large court for the
Kuests. Lawns and fountains and low
plantings will further embellish the
premises. A concrete bulkhead will
extend towards the ocean, while the
full length of the hotel property will
be capped with a perforated parapet
wall.
The entire Improvements now being
projected will cost in the neighbor
hood of $300,000. but thw owners of
the property, who recently acquired it
from Lan Moore, will leave nothing
undone to make it on a par with the
best beach hotels in the country.
The hotel corporation consists of
residents of both Seaside and Portland.
They include J. E. Oa-tes, John L.
Bthridge, president; Seines & Wheatley,
Fred Moore, L. L. Paget, J. T. Lewis,
J. A. Prouty, A. F. Poley, Harry Hogue,
Dr. O. C. Hagmeier, Mrs. A. S. Hogue
and Captain A. S. Foster. Mrs. Harry
Hogue is manager of the hotel.
BEAR ATTACKS HOOD MAN
E. C. Owens lias Narrow Escape
From Angry Brnin,
HOOD RIVER, Or, July 26. (Spe
cial.) K. C. Owens, owner of a five
acre strawberry, tract high on the side
of Bald Butte, had a narrow escape
from injury the other day when a large
male bear attacked him. Mr. Owena had
carried his rifle to the berry field to
await the appearance of a porcupine
that he thought had been feeding on
his fruit. He heard a rustling in the
brush and a big she bear stood con
fronting him. He killed the animal,
only to find her hostile mate challeng
ing him.
Mr. Owens, discovering that he had
but a single shell in his gun, took to
the woods. The bear gave chase. Aa Mr.
Owens turned around a big fir tree, the
bear made a pass with his paw. tearing
the fleeing man's shirt and snagging
his trousers.
Mr. Owens remains lame from a ship
yard accident in Portland last winter,
but he eluded the bear.

RETAIL DRUGGISTS FAVOR CITY
PREVENTIVE SCHEME.
Denial Made of Any Criticism of
Health Officer Parrisn's Pre
ventive Work.
Although voicing sympathy for the
work of City Health Officer Parrish in
his efforts to stamp out communicable
diseases in Portland, officials of the
Oregon State Federation of Druggists
object to an article in a Portland aft
ernon newspaper to the effect that this
organization bad filed a protest with
the city council against tho plan of
compulsory vaccination proposed by the
city health officer.
The letter of protest states that
neither the Oregon State Federation
of Druggists nor any other organiza
tion of druggists in Portland has filed,
or will file, any protest against com
pulsory vaccination as advocated by
the city health officer.
"To the contrary," reads ths letter,
"we are in sympathy with the work
of City Health Officer Parrish in his
efforts to stamp out communicable and
other diseases and to better tae health
conditions of Portland, and we have
confidence in him and have extended
him our earnest support."
The letter Is signed by A. W. Wil
son, secretary of the State Federation
of Druggists; Edgar Stipe, president of
the Portland Retail Druggists' asso
ciation; Powers At Lstes, Skldmore
Drug company, and Ehigene H- Kurtz,
representing the Portland branch of
the Amerioan registered pharmacists.

President of Women's Auxiliary to
Speak tn Portland Thursday Night.
Mrs. Mary F. McWhorter. national
president of the women's auxiliary to
the Ancient Order of Hibernians, will
visit in Portland Thursday. At the re
cent national convention held In San
Francisco Mrs. McWhorter was re
elected president of the 'women's aux
iliary and before returning to her home
in Chicago will make a tour of the
principal cities of the northwest.
She will be met at the station Thurs
day mom in by a delegation from the
Portland division of the women's aux
iliary and a delegation from the United
Irish Societies. Plans are being made
for the entertainment of the distin
guished guest, including a breakfast at
the Portland hotel, a drive over the
Columia river highway and an open
meeting at the Lincoln high school
Thursday evening.
A programme of music and entertain
ment is being arranged under the di
rection of Mrs. W. A. Elvers, stats
president. The meeting will be open
to the public without charge. Mrs. Mo
Wborter is a speaker of great ability.

country. In Butte county. Idaho, where
returned soldiers have been colonized,
has been strongly cond mned by a com
mission of experts supplied by the Uni
versity of Idaho, at the request of Gov
ernor Davis, to investigate dry-farming
possibilities in that locality.
According to O. P. Barber, commis
sioner of immigration, who accom
panied the commission on its tour of
Investigation, the country is not the
only thing deserving of condemnation.
Returned soldiers have been located
on S20 acres of solid lava or gravel or
mountain side that Is characterized by
the commission as being absolutely use
less for farming or grazing purposes.
There are not only a few such claims
but a number of them. The commis
sion did not find a single place upon
which a filing had been made or which
was pointed out to them by those do
ing the colonising which they would
recommend anyone to go upon t- make
a living.
Steps are now being taken to pre
vent the collection of notes signed by
the soldier-homesteaders tn payment
for location fees. How snany of these
notes are in existence is not known,
but It is presumed they will total sev
eral thousand dollars. ' '
