Amateur theatricals at Reed college reached a high point in stage settings Friday night, when the Drama club staged three plays in the assembly room be fore a capacity audience. The work of the club from arranging the plays to staging them was done entirely by students, except rehearsals, which were directed by faculty members. The play "Sire de Maletroit's Door," dramatized from Stevenson's short story by mem bers of the club, was very effective. The cast, Ray Wilson, Edith Turner, Glenn Ruscher and Otto Schutlz, de veloped the romantic spirit of the play j in a pleasing manner. Rowan "Wheal don, Marion Byrns, Hazel Brown and Theodore Countryman presented the "Tears of the Birds," a Japanese sketch. Comedy over a mislaid headpiece, featured "The Lost Silk Hat," pre sented by William Stone, Herbert Swett, Craig Eliot, James Gantenbein and Leo Shatz. Novelty Chair Exhibited. A new novelty chair may make its initial ap pearance in Portland if negotiations now under way with the Oregon chair factory are successfully carried out, according to Thomas A. Blair of San Krancisco, president of the Combined Baby Chair company. Mr. Blair, ar rived in Portland yesterday with a model of the chair an ingenious affair which resembles an ordinary dining room fixture, but which opens to pre sent a regulation infant's high chair, with eating tray. It may be used ither as a chair for adults, youths or babies. The Inventor of the novelty chair Is John Agati, a San Francisco bachelor, of Italian birth. FOBESTERS TO REPORT TOMORROW. Korest Supervisors Brown of the Fre mont national forest, Harris of the "Wallowa and Reid of the Colvllle are expected 1n the district forest office to morrow to report for a short detail of work. Assistant District Forester Klory in charge of operations is ex pected to return to Portland today after a trip to Pendleton. Walla Walla and Bend, where he has been going over 190 forest estimates'. Miss Kdith Toungkrantz of the distirct office of operations left last evening for the headquarters of the Umatilla national forest in Pendleton, where she will re main for a short period as forest clerk. Fifty California Alttmni Meet. Fifty alumni of the University of Cali fornia met Friday night for a banquet in the University club. Speakers were Homer C. Campbell, president of the University club; P. L- Campbell, presi dent of the University of Oregon: 15dwin Mays and W. E. Creed, president of the University of California Alumni association, and a regent of the Uni versity of California. Miss Frances Gill read several of her own poems. Professor II. 'B. Torrey of Reed col lege presided. Party to Be Given Boys of 69th. Members of the auxiliary of the 69th artillery met Friday night at the courthouse and perfected plans for a real "welcome home" party and enter tainment, to be given at Rose City Park clubhouse, when the members of the unit are mustered out at Camp Lewis. Mrs. R. S. McKibbin. president of the auxiliary, is in charge of ar rangements. The dato will bo an nounced later. - For-Hirb Car Owners Want Stands. Owners of for-hire automobiles will appear next Friday afternoon before the city council to petition for stands in the congested district, under the provisions of the new traffic law. Under this ordinance only four stands will be permitted in each block and the work of assigning the various tttands is a difficult task wlilch the members of the city council must as sume. Housing Code Discussed. "The Ef fect of Portland's New Housing Code on the Home Owner" was the subject of an address Friday night by H. M. Esterly, president of the Portland bousing committee, !n the model bun galow at Fourth and Stark streets. O. G. Hughson of the Builders' Exchange, bp ok 6 on "The Contractor and the Small Home Owner." Wade Pipes pre sided. About 50 person were present. Bird Lecture at North Portland.
