State Highway Commission
Speeds Up Work.

FEDERAL FUNDS AVAILABLE
.Ashland-Klamath Kalis Highway to
Ilccelvc Karly Attention, $10,000
Having Cccn Appropriated.
Between 200 and 250 miles of paving
"wil be handled 'by the state highway
commission this year, judging from the.
aggressive policy of the commission in
speeding up worK in the past few
weeks. Aside from the funds available
in Oregon, the federal government- is
more anxious than ever to co-operate
in the desire to provide employment,
and red tape will to a large extent be
eliminated.
As quickly as possible the commis
sion is getting the main work under
way, and the ensuing month will be one
of constant activity for the members of
the commisssion. W. Thompson and
.T?. A. Booth plan a tour of the west
side shortly to determine the location
of parts of the Pacific highway, and
Jlr. Booth will start in a few days for
Klamath. Later he will go by horse
back into Lincoln county. Uy the April
meeting S. Benson, chairman of the
.ummission. will have returned from
California and the entire commission
will then take up the post road and
lorest road projects . with . the govern
ment. Klamath to Rwlt .Attention.
Klamath people.who have beei threat
ening to cut off their - county from
Oregon and join California, will soon
receive attention. The commission Fri
day arranged for the development of
the Ashland-Klamath Kails highway
and appropriated $40,000 for the first
unit, from the foot - of the mountain
on the west, known as Green Springs,
to Jenny creek. Jackson and Klamath
counties are each to put up $20,000,
making a total of $SO.O00 for this unit.
The improvement will take out the
worst part of the highway and elimi
nate a very bad grade. This highway
has a daily auto line and over it a
large amount of prodin-e - is shipped.
In response to a louir telegram re
ceived last nighL. Commissioner Booth
will take up road problems in Klam
ath, the commission having turned that
part of the state over to him. One of
the main points will be The Oalles
California highway. The first link is
in Klamath county, and Commissioner
Hooth is to see what can be done about
the section from Klamath Falls to the
Deschutes county line.
Forestry Service Wilt Iay Half.
As part of this road runs through the
Indian reservation, the commission
hopes to receive aid from the Indian
department, and as there is consider
able mileage through the forest re
serve, the commission has received in
surances that the forestry service will
iro 50-50 in that part. There is a daily
mail between Klamath Falls and Lake-
view, and the commission will deter
mine which route will be selected as
the location. A wire from Klamath
Falls announces there is $500,000 ready
for co-operation and an inquiry as to
what the state highway commission
will do.
The commission will ask for specific
information as to how the county wants
this $500,000 apportioned, on the north-and-soutli
road and the east-and-west
road. There is every prospect of a big
tart being made on road work in
Klamath within a few months.
Nothing has been done for Lincoln
county, although that county is will
ing to co-operate. The delay is due to
the inability of the highway depart
ment to get engineers. As soon as
possible a survey will be made and
estimates prepared, and then the com
mission will be in position to advance
road construction in that section.
ClatMop County Get I O.'.OOO.
A matter of $105,000 has been appro
priated by the commission for Clatsop
county, and Clatsop county offers $65.
000 additional and the town of Seaside
another $7000 for a 16-loot road from
Youngs bay bridge to Seaside. The cost,
however, will be $lu5,000 more than
the state appropriation, and the offers
of the county and Seaside.
It is probable that before the end of
the season contracts may be called to
hard-surface the stretch between Cas-
rade Locks and Hood River. This 20-odd-mile
strip has been graded with the

exception of a couple of miles near
Hood River. Overhead or an under
ground, will be constructed this summer
between Hosier and Hood River, and
the three miles between The Dalles and
Seufert is to be hard-surfaced and
bids called for within a few weeks.
Plans for the bridge across the Des
chutes river have been prepared and
this structure will very likely be un
derconstruction before many months.
Proceeding eastward as soon as the
railroad encroachments in Sherman
county can be adjusted the commission
will be ready to advertise for bids on
that section of the Columbia river high
way, as the engineering has been com
pleted. Wheeler County Work Ordered.
The state has ordered 1.7 miles grav
eled in Wheeler county, on Service
creek, with the crew and equipment at
present employed in Condon canyon.
The estimated cost is $12,000. Regard
ing the McKenzie highway in Wheeler
county, the county has been instructed
by the commission to submit plans for
co-operation at the April meeting, when
all post roads and forest road projects
will be taken up for consideration.
Highway Engineer Nunn has stated he
will put a crew of surveyors on the
Condon-Mayville road, a part of the
John Day highway, as soon as men can
be procured for this purpose.
Along the upper stretches of the Co
lumbia river highway in Gilliam coun
ty grading is now proceeding between
Blalock and Arlington. In the way of
co-operation, Umatilla county has of
fered $250,000 to be used by the com
mission on the- section between the
Morrow county line and Echo and has
orfered $225,000 on a 50-60 basis for
hard-surfacing from Eastland to the
Washington state line. In addition, ;
survey has been ordered by the com
mission between Pendleton and Echo.
With contracts already let and those
in prospect. Oregon will see more roads
under construction this year than any
other time in its history. Po far as the
commission is concerned, it is moving
with celerity, and if it is not held back
by too many formalities on the part of
the government, where federal aid is
expected, a complete outline of forest
road projects will be mapped out in
a month or two. While there is great
insistence that the Mount Hood loop
be started, Commissioner Thompson
says that the matter of precedence
must be weighed. The state is now
spending $48,000 on the Zig Zag section
of the Mount Hood loop.
